Race and athletic ability.

I feel like you skimmed what I wrote and missed some very key words.

I said the rest of the world ISN'T adapting and that it's cultural and that running is becoming more popular so there are more people doing it likely creating competition against the Kenyans. The point about Kenyans moving into metro areas is a very valid point, although the reading I just found suggests it's runners of a specific tribe rather than Kenya as a whole. So I suppose any statistical analysis would need to be done with the Kalenjin vs Everyone else.

In regards to genetics, your ability to become overweight is something you can be genetically predisposed to. Therefore it works the opposite way. However it's more likely their diet and culture influencing that. It also wouldn't be 1 trait, it would be a combination of prevalent dominant and recessive traits which in a region even as great as 5million people, can absolutely cause a "type" of person. Statistically there are some regions with very short people, there are some regions with very tall people, there are some regions with tons of red heads, there are some regions where the majority has 6 fingers on each hand. So if having thin ankles, thin calves, and being tall and thin are things that are genetic traits that make you more likely to be a good runner, is it not possible that within the Kalenjin tribe there is a higher incident of these traits being present than in other regions?

So a genetic predisposition to have a greater number of physical traits good for running + environment/culture = great runners.

Then there is Lactic acid... I'd be interested to read a study on the Kalenjin and how their bodies process it since most of the research is relatively new.

In regards to the lack of information on actual body statistics rather than weight and height... I suggest you look into Race and Anthropology the work of Franz Boas, and why studies of this sort are often avoided due to racial inferiority or superiority complexes.

Pretty simple really; God gave blacks genetic and anatomical superiority to compensate for their inferior brains.

I should point out that smaller does not necessarily mean inferior, though it would make sense in this case for the two to not be mutually exclusive. It can obviously be said that it comes down to how our brains are wired, though studies have shown that blacks are, hereditarily, challenged intellectually more so than the rest of humanity.

Blacks are genetically superior. Higher levels of testosterone, different anatomical structures in some cases.

Think about it... For the last many several thousands of years blacks have historically lived in a harsher climate. If you believe in Darwinism, their dominant traits had to feature survivalism tendencies. Strength, speed etc. Those were the people who lived to reproduce and passed on their genes.

495 out of the top 500 100m times ever run were run by people of west african descent. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. East africans are the opposite of west africans and have low bmi and slender long limbs that are ideal for long distance running. And of fucking course its genetic.... Are we stupid?

Its not just kenyans. East africans in general. Haile gebreselasse from Ethiopia is considred the best ld runner of all time. Also lactic acid metabolism is likely the same among different races.

Source- i ran a 413 mile in college and ran all my life. I know this shit

Race is a culturally constructed term. There are more biological differences within a "race" than between different "races".

Kenyans live at higher altitudes and therefore have a natural talent in stamina. Same with the most successful climbers in cycling (Quintana, Contador, Froome) are born/grew up at altitude. Or sherpas in Tibet.

First of all, the race isnt real argument is the biggest political correctness crock of shit the world has ever seen. You most feel good at night knowing you are fighting the good fight. But its pointless. Dont call it race. Call it ethnicity. Doesnt matter what you call it, it is real. Doctors use race information to screen against common problems that different races have at different frequencies.

As for your altitude argument... Explain to me why then west african descended people hold 495 out of 500 of the top 100m times ever run. Is it altitude? Why arent andean peoples great distance runners too? The live at a much higher altitude than kenyans. Lost for words?

I understand that there could be an even larger regional genetic/social advantage, I was just referring to an article I found that said that specifically the kalenjin people were the best distance runners.

In regards to lactic acid thresholds... apparently the ability to achieve a higher threshold is possible via genetics... but is it a genetic trait more prevalent in africa? That's what I'm curious about. Sure athletes across the world may have similar thresholds.. but are there more in certain areas? In which I wouldn't suggest that kenya were the only region with this... but that with a combination of other factors could also be an advantage.

To me after reading this post it seems like a ton of different factors and the sheer popularity of running in Africa allows for a lot more of the best athletes to show. There could be tons of perfectly genetic suited people in the world... but they never give it a shot so they don't end up as runners.

Running has a huge talent pool everywhere. Its not often that kids growing up dont find out that they are fast if they are indeed fast. The amount of dominance in kenyan and ethiopian runners is definitely too large however to be put down to the amount runners who "try" distance running. Distance running has a huge talent base throughout the world

Actually people of african descent have lower body fat indexes and denser bones than caucasians so swimming is indeed a different proposition for them because the naturally float less in the water than caucasians

Train low sleep high is the optimal scenario because at lower altitude with more oxygen you can work your muscles harder but sleeping at altitude boosts your body's altitude response by increasing your oxygen carrying capacity.

You mean you never thought science could be so innocent, but labeled to be so evil by jackass race-baiters like yourself

Youre a jackass race baiter. Carry on thinking legitamate scientists are racist just because they have a curiosity about the truth to why for example (ill say it again) 495 out of the top 500 100m dash times ever run were run by people of west african descent. Try to come up with some cultural or envioronmental excuse (thats what people like you do, you make excuses) as to why there is such a dominance by such a localized group of athletes.

Lost for words?

Haha. You read it and knew that i completely put you in your place and you had no possible comeback so you posted that. I accept your apology. You are indeed a very sorry person, ya jackass

You're absolutely right, I missed a few keys words. I quickly realised that after I posted it and then re-read your posts, my bad. I actually mean't to post something about that but got carried away in other posts.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to get too into details tonight, but I read in one study that majority of the Kenyan national team has been observed at their training camps to consume less calories than there predicted needs for energy. Maybe thats a factor?

For blood lactate, I believe Kenyan elite runners have been recorded as being slightly more efficient at clearance, but then other studies have shown European teenagers as being much more efficient. So this suggests that Kenyan's have more trainability. Which could be influenced, largely by culture.

Thanks for the study information.

The problem with reducing it to racism is that it's just true that up to 80% of the winners of long distance running competitions since the 1980s have been of East African descent. It is in the interest of science (including social science in this case) to find out why.

Would it be racist against bears for scientists to wonder "Why do bears hibernate?" Would that somehow mean that bears are a lesser (or better) species of animal?

inb4 you copy and post a meme or say something sarcastic to escape actually having to contemplate the question.

Also if you are right and what squashmosh said is racist, then being racist obviously must not be a bad thing at all. We are just talking about science. So if the science itself is racist, who cares. Theres no malicious intent here

is is racist to say that afro-americans, on average at a professional level, run distances faster than caucasians? nois it racist to say that afro -americans are all faster than caucasians because they were bred that way(Jimmy the Greek). Yes

i am black ((half)close enough)

without slavery say goodbye to the NBA and the NFL. We, as a race, were literally bred to be bigger faster and stronger.

If humans did it with dogs, they could also do it with a race of people.

Welcome to reality.

I thought elevation and oxygen levels also played a part in why kenyans are so damn fast. They train by running at high elevations with less oxygen available so that when they race at a lower elevation they have an abundance of oxygen.

or maybe its just cause they're black.

There was a great ted talk about how they took the genes of many different 100 yard dash runners who won there race, and saw they had some form of mutation or had some gene that the people who lost didn't have.

The problem that I see is this: yes a lot of people disrespect president Obama for no other reason that he is a black man, and are complete ignoramus racists.

HOWEVER: [/i]If a white person disagrees with Obama's policies and political vision, regardless of his race, that somehow also gets attributed to that person being a racist.

Unfortunately America as a while can't understand the complexity of argumentation here…if you don't like him, you're a racist.

Its cultural.

If boxing was as popular over the last few decades as it was in the 1920s, 1940s, or 1970s and the current popular sports were not so popular you'd see some of the current NBA and NFL players in the ring. And you'd see better heavyweight fighters than Ali or Frazer now in 2013.

But its not popular and thus boxing gets the scraps and not the top athletes.

Running in Kenya will always be popular and the best runners will run competitively not do something else.

Genetically I don't think there is much to it the fact they basically don't have fat people only has a little to do with genes and again is more cultural.
