Rabies?

So the other day i was walking into my friend Morgan's house with her and we noticed the dog was chewing on a bear bone that her dad had just shot a couple days before. The dog was about 8 feet away, and on the chain. We were admiring the nastiness of the bone and started walking into her house when the dog LuLu attacked me. She bit me 2 times, once in the thigh and once in the wrist. Her dad came out of the house screaming after hearing the dog's viciousness and took me straight to the clinic. Luckily I didn't have to get stiches but i bled through 2 layers of gauze in 2 hours, was put on antibiotics and was ordered to bathe for 20 minutes 3 times a day for 10 days. The dog was quarintined because it didn't have its rabies shots, and was chewing on a bear bone. So, not for another 4 days i will know if i have rabies or not. I'm pretty much scared out of my mind that i will keel over foaming at the mouth any second now. Has anyone had rabies before? Please inform me on whatever will get me through the rabies shots if indeed i have rabies. Plus, i can always use some comforting :) +k for comforting comments and useful info

if youve got rabies you have a nasty, really fucking freaky stomach shot coming. its a needle thats like the same size as teh syringe they use....

no now you just get a bunch of normal shots in your arm, and to the creator of this thread you should go to a hospital immedately because you need to get the shots as soon as possible, rabies is 100% fatal so you really dont want to wait around before you get the shots

and also to the creator if you got bit in the leg it will take a week and a half or so to work its way up your nervous system into your brain, so you wont start foaming at the mouth or acting crazy for a week and a half, but by the time that happens its too late for the shots and you will die (no joke), so go get the shots as soon as possible if you think the dog had rabies

well it begins with symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat so if you have any of those go get check out

right from webmd

If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to the rabies virus, it is important to seek medical attention before symptoms develop. Rabies is nearly always fatal, but shots given before symptoms appear can help prevent the disease.

How is rabies diagnosed?

Rabies in humans can be difficult to diagnose. After symptoms start, tests that can be done include:

  • Direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test. This common, rapid test detects the rabies virus protein. DFA testing is done by taking a sample of tissue from the potentially affected area.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. This test finds the genetic material (DNA) of the rabies virus proteins. PCR testing is very accurate and can be done on saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, or tissue.

To find out if a person was exposed to the rabies virus, the animal must be tested. Diagnosis in animals also is difficult. Animals that show signs of abnormal behavior but can't be tested often are assumed to be rabid. The risk that an animal is infected with the rabies virus is based on:

After rabies symptoms appear, the disease progresses quickly, and there is no cure. It is important to get medical care before symptoms occur so that there is less chance of serious damage from the rabies virus. Medical care for rabies includes:

  • Thorough cleansing of the area of exposure (bite, scratch, or open sore).
  • Vaccines and immune globulin.

Any animal bite or area of exposure should be washed with soap and water immediately. Your doctor and local health department can help you find out if you have been infected with the rabies virus. Rabies vaccinations will be given right away if your chance of getting rabies is high.

Postexposure prophylaxis (PEP)

If you think you have been exposed to rabies, you may be given a series of shots (injections) known as postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). The shots help the body's immune system destroy the disease in its early stages. Getting PEP before symptoms appear usually prevents infection, and you are likely to recover. After symptoms of rabies are present, PEP is thought to not be effective.

PEP is given depending upon your risk of exposure to rabies. Your local health department or a doctor can help determine your risk and whether you need PEP. Factors involved in determining this risk include:

My advice is dont wait, once the symptoms begin, there is no chance you will survive. Get the dog tested if possible, otherwise, the dog will have to be put down to get the test done.

Rabies is extremely rare in North America and the chances of getting it is very low, but dont fuck around with that virus. There is no such thing as quarantine with rabies.

the only way they can test you for rabies is a brain sample, and rabies is 100 percent fatal after symptoms show.

you are pretty much fucked.

no not really you arent going to die of fucking rabies get real.

depends on the breed and temperment of the dog. often mixed dogs are prone to adopting negative attributes from either breed. it might have just been territorial of the bone and since you are somewhat of a stranger it may have felt you as threatening, therefor why it didnt attack its owners. anyways the first thing would be to check the dog and also check yourself. also i dont think the dog would express aggression within minutes of coming into contact with the bone. from what im reading it might take a few weeks or even months.

Prodromal phase: first symptoms of rabies

The early symptoms of rabies tend to be subtle, last 2 to 3 days, and include the following:

  • Change in tone of the dog's bark
  • Chewing at the bite site
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Subtle changes in behavior

i was attacked by my own dog, it bit me in the face, and it was never rabid. some dogs have bizarre behaviors and are very possessive of their owners for no real apparent reason.

wait, so the doctor is waiting four days instead of giving you shots?

unlike most, i believe in doctors, so dont worry they probably know whats going on

Rabbis?

One of my friends last summer while we where longboarding got bit by a dog and the people ran away....in any case he had to get like 10 shots in his arm like once every couple days or something and he said they wernt even bad....so go get them!!!!

i watched some show about this girl who had rabies. they had no idea what it was because she got bit by a bat and they never really saw it happen. so she was basically about to die, and the doctor had some crazy idea, the rabies like spreads through your nervous system, and so they basically killed her for a little while, and then brought her back and it stopped the rabies and she ended up living, but basically she had to relearn how to walk and talk and all that kinda stuff.

have fun

I know a guy who got bit by a stray cat. he just had to go get a bunch of shots and he was fine. only down side oof it was the cost and he said the shots are very painful

Thanks to all you guys :) no, the doctor isn't waiting four days to see if i need shots. the dog was quarintined in the pound the day after she bit me and it has to be there for 10 days while they test her for rabies. its been almost 9 days since i was bit and im not dead yet! ... for now. i'm keeping my hopes up that she won't have rabies. even if she does, they would just give me the shots- which btw arn't in the stomach anymore- and i should be fine. thanks for your time :)

its kind of interesting to quarantine a dog in a pound considering, thats how most dogs in general lose it. thats how the spca decides whether its time or not to put the animal down. if they become aggressive within the cages or not. anywho, im sure they know what theyre doing. as i said, i dont think you or the dog have rabies. just terroritorial behavior. which i mean, if the dog is that aggressive, it may have to just be put down, or you know! call caesar milan! haha
