So sad to read todays news. An amazing athlete. It was a pleasure to see him ride. I'm sure all skiers will be affected ....

Three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons has died at age 32. Irons, from Hawaii, was an entrant in the Rip Curl Pro Search world championship tour event currently being held in Puerto Rico, but he was forced to withdraw from the competition through illness.

Billabong spokesman Andrew Flitton told Australia's Surfing Life that the 32-year-old had been ill with dengue fever.

Flitton said Irons first flew from Puerto Rico to Miami, where he spent two days on an IV drip.

He then insisted on heading home to see his own doctor, but became sick and missed a connecting flight to Hawaii from Dallas, Texas, Surfing Life reported.

He checked into a Dallas hotel to rest. Hotel staff found Irons dead the next morning.

The Association of Surfing Professionals was expected to make a statement shortly.

Irons was world champion in 2002, 2003 and 2004, winning 19 world tour titles - his most recent in September at the Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

He leaves behind his pregnant wife Lyndie Dupuis who he married in 2007.

Seriously, how the hell did this happen??? RIP. He was ridiculously good too. Him and Bruce have that unique aggro style that separated them from the crowd.

RIP

Just heard of this. Super sad that an illness like this killed him. Is this not easily treatable?

I just looked up dengue fever and it's pretty nasty, definitely something you don't want to leave unchecked. RIP for this guy, he didn't deserve this.

RIP

this isn't a shot at him, but how come people insist on seeing their own doctors, especially if his was that far away. Whatever caused his death could have been prevented in a hospital, even if it wasn't in Hawaii.

not all diseases show instant and terrible signs right away. it could have been mistaken for a fever, tried to get some rest then never woke up. you never know sometimes or in this case what exactly he was experiencing.

Holy fuck!Im suck a huge Andy Irons fan. He was pretty much the C.R. Johnson of surf... he was amazing and pretty cocky, and grew to become one of the most respected surfers ever...Im in shock, so many of my idols have been passing away...

Anybody else following the rip curl pro search in portugual? This is so weird, I remember the announcers saying that he just got sick. He was fine like a few days ago. I thought he was gonna get well and surf his next heat. I saw his come up in my face book thing and was like no way, then I saw it come up again. Rip.
