Quitting the Racing Scene

I need help, my dad (who likes to libe through me) wants to see me continue racing. I however after buying my 1080's, discovered the sheer joy i can have in the park.but my dad is prez of the race club, so he keeps telling me about all the changes the team is making to make racing better for me. SO i'm like 'wth dad, i already said i'm not interested' but he won't listen. Tell me what makes it better to be a newschooler, and tell them the athleticism it takes. Just post it below, i'm gonna read him some, so don't pull that 'racers wear spandex so they are homosexual' shit

the racers wear all the spandex shit, and it makes them look gay

I raced up until last season, but I did it so I could ski 5 times a week. Just tell him that skiing is taking a turn towards newschool, and that this may very well be the future of skiing. Do what you want, he cant force you to do anything.

Tell him you are not interested in racing anymore, but still like skiing, just not racing.

easy. tell him you don't enjoy racing. if you don't enjoy it then you have no reason to try hard and you will start to suck and crash into a tree and explode into a flaming burito.

sounds good...i've said it all in the past, that i get no enjoyment from racing.......but he still pressures me

Dee-ahs

ok well if you keep racing you are going to continue to get better because skills you learn in racing translate to the park. and who buys your equipment and passes? if you really hate racing that much just tell him you made your decision and you are not going to race anymore. just dont get pissy with your parents that never works out. all things considered through racing you get out to the hill and you at least get some park time in every time you go to the hill and through racing you prolly get to go to a few different hills and get time in different parks.

Gotta Love The Midwest

you probly dont want to read your last comment to your dad. He probly wants you to race because he is the race club president and feels like he needs to set an example to the other club members that he raises a good ski racing son. Something like that

'Surrender pronto, or we will level toronto.'- Canadian Bacon

just tell him that you really aren't interested in racing anymore, then make him sit back and watch a ski movie.

well is ur dad paying for all ur skiing shit? cause if he is, then i would say stay with racing to get all the $$$ for more newschoolin shit. um even if he isn't i mean i still would sta on the team... it makes u an all around better skiier, esp big mtn shit. I just would take it less seriously. ask a friend to join and just fuck around at practice doing stupid shit. make the practices fun somehow like doing a slalom course switch, etc. i dunno bro, good luck

How about a compromise? Tell your Dad you'd be open to joining the mogul team or some new school club. That way you're still being coached, but you're jumping and doing more enjoyable things than stick chasing.

I SOO hear where you are coming from. how old are you? I just finished my second year of FIS, and pretty much picked up newschool seriously this winter. Hopefully I can give you some insigt to your decisions.

I've thought long and hard about what to do with my skiing career. When racing, I'd watch videos and often feel I'm falling behind where newschool is going. I just keep doing it as much as possible. I see the value of racing, and I actually *gasp* enjoy it (ill get flamed for this one). But, I probably enjoy newschool more. Why do I keep racing? well, it gives me the opportunity to ski every morning in the winter. If i get on top of my school, or if i feel like it I'll skip and ski park in the afternoons. Plus, it gives me the opportunity to go on all kinds of training camps to far away places where you can ski off season when most newschoolers are in, well, school. Also, The feel that I've gotten from racing has helped me learn newschool much faster. Every time I go out I can learn something new.

What your father is saying about 'supporting' newschool and stuff is similar with my dad, he is ok with me doing it, so long as it doesn't conflict with my racing. I understand this also, because he's the one who is paying for it.

The compromise that I make, is that I get to go to whister in the summer and ski newschool. Sure I get less days of newschool, but I make sure I work on some sort of newschool everytime i'm at the mountain. even if its just a little bit. whether its skiing switch, taking off switch off little jumps--all of which can be done in your race skis, or even bringing your twintips to the hill to ski the park while the coaches set the course. every little bit counts.

Keep pushing and ski AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. if quitting racing means that you ski less, you'll probably be a better jibber sticking with racing.

Another option you may want to look into if your parents have the funds, is going to a ski academy.

The structure of an academy oriented towards newschool (like CVA for example) could prove to your parents that you are a dedicated athlete with regards to jibbing. you'll do dryland training, trampoline work and all of that cool stuff and become a pretty sick skier in the process.

Basically, my word to you is to not shut any doors. if you can ski lots, and do both, just remember you get many more ski days than most people. I know it sounds funny, but someday you might regret having quit racing.

thats my 2 cents (maybe stretching on to 3 cents)

i'm 15, racing gives me no enjoyment and i'm joining the freestyle club. My parents pay for anything racing, but when i announced retirement, they said 'you have to pay for everything but a seasons pass next year' i was like WTF, you spend 2000 dollars a year for me to 'have fun', and now that i want to have fun i have to go by on my own?

also my dad is scared i will have no friends and competition....which isn't true

Dee-ahs

i think your dad needs some sense knocked into him, show him a ski movie

I don't know what to say dude. give your parents more credit, they arent evil people, just help them try to understand what you want to do. Just tell them how dedicated you are. If they say that they wont pay for your shit, tell them that doing what you love is worth the sacrifice, that should get them to support you. Right now you're coming off like a whiny boy. If you want something, do what you need to get it.

word to that, nicely put

I try to convince my parents every day that newschool type skiing is what I love, and what im going to do for a hobby, and hopefully a lifestyle later on in life. My mom still continues to say I am going to severly hurt myself. Sometimes theres nothing you can do to convince your parents whats up. If this is something you love, do it on your own. Save up the money, don't ask for any help, and they can't tell you what kind of skiing you have to do. When your pops see's your talent and how much effort u put into it, he will understand. Just dont diss racing in front of him, and understand that racing is his newschool.. ya know?

well it's not quite solely for me...i'm not the only newschooler on the team, Mr.Cheese is too....as is about 3 others not on here. They are trying to change to keep us on. But i couldn't care less

Dee-ahs

I noticed from your profile that you are from martock? the skiing scene from out there is pretty hurtin from what I hear, and I suppose that the reason that your father wants to keep you guys on the race team is because there arent any other people to ski on it. I know some dudes from nova scotia though...

All parents are different, I mean he could be totally open to you or could say something like 'if you dont race I dont pay for shit' and cut you off from other things. You should really follow your heart. Still, there are other circumstances to consider, and Im sure racing will let you ski a lot more, for a lot le$$. Ski racing will make you a better skier, always something to consider, the park isnt everything. If you really feel oppressed by racing then dont do it, otherwise, consider these other factors.

'I would be embarrassed to constantly complain about my life considering all the freedom and opportunities we have today. People that can't find anything they enjoy in life simply aren't giving it a real try.' ~Nick 311

be like me, complain to your dad every day, get other people in your family to talk to him, skip training everyday and go in the park. the 3 step program

like the smooth taste of duff -

duff man

whatever u do dont go to park city 'winter sports school'. its for bumps and shit. go off by yourself, and make a shitload of $$$ this summer. then support yourself for anything u need. show him a good ski movie. not There's Something About McConkey, cuz that'll show him the dumbass side of newschool.

once u can ski midwest dirt and grass, you can call yourself good

getboards must die

Jordan, tell him plain and simple to compare what i look like in a bathing suit after hiking the park all year and to look at corey webster after racing! next year, i'll look out for you man and help you with whatever you want, i might even be helping coach the freestyle club. just tell him that racing at martock is a sinking ship and the martock newschool scene is just taking off, and you want to get on before there is anymore people. it's pretty core right now with me, jensen, matt(east), morgan, ross, nick and nathan. and you will learn real fast from skiing with us. at martock, you won't go anywhere in racing, so take that 2000, spend 150 to join us, then take the rest and get him to send you to high north with me next winter. just don't take no for an answer. and with joey gone, and joel boyelyns mom owning the hill, racing is not gonna have 1st rights on the hill, the snowboarders and freestyle skiers are, so it'll be the shit and if you get in now, you'll be gettin respect, unlike how you guys get trashed by everyone includeing the snowbladers right now. i wanna see you out there next year, so tell him to put all of his energy into making newschool the shit. okay bud? peace.

one.

Simply say:

'Look Dad, I know that you are very proud of my racing accomplishments, and I am very happy that you gave me the opportunity to experience that.

However, right now in my life I'm reaching a point in which I can either continue skiing, doing an aspect of it that I love. Or, I can continue racing, spend my teenage years growing a steady dislike for the sport, quit skiing forever and take my kids to the beach on every vacation I have. And I'll tell the psychiatrist it was all your fault because you forced me to race.'

Then, you'll be on a set of twins for sure. ;)

If you saw method man in the streets, he would punch you in the face.
