Quitting resort job before end of season?

Anybody on here ever get a job at the resort that required you to stay till the end of the season then dip early?

did they hire you back the next year?
 
You’re saying just be up front with them about when I’ll have to leave and just don’t dip?

Yes I have. I've been a mostly seasonal worker my whole life (for both epic and alterra resorts) and haven't had many issues at all getting re-hired. Just uhhhh put in some work and practice some form of decent work ethic, make a good reputation for yourself, ingratiate yourself with managers and others, and just have fun with it. Like they may not be happy with it but its honestly super duper common for people to bounce-out around Late Feb/Early March, most managers kinda expect it when it comes to the nature of the ski resort workforce beast. In fact one of my seasons working, my boss kinda let me "end my season of work" in March just before the season ended so I could get some time off to go ski and close up shop for the year.

Considering the mountain employment crisis atm, I really would not worry about it - everyone is pretty damn desperate.

Also, I’ll add this - I quit on my first day at the job at Breck and received an email that I had been “blacklisted” from employment at any Vail Resorts owned property. After talking to others who got they same email, they told me that it is only a one season ban.

i never did it but like people said it’s pretty common, I would say just be a good employee and sometime mid season tell your boss you’ve got another opportunity that’s gunna require you to leave x amount of time early. might have to use homie passes to ski out the season if ur gunna stick around at the mountain tho

I got assigned the 6:30 AM shift on Peak 9. According to the employee guidelines, you have to take the employee shuttle to work. So, I would have had to wake up at 4, drive to the employee lot, get on a bus to another stop (Peak 8), then another bus to Peak 9, then ride up the lift to the top station where I was employed. So, I wouldn’t have been able to clock in until I got there. It’s such bullshit and I genuinely feel bad for all of the employees that Vail exploits.

In better news, I kept the employee pass and milked it for as long as I could. I like to think that I stole a couple $$$ from Vail?.

I think it’s mostly about giving adequate notice and not just burning it all down on your way out the door.

Having been a manager in hotels and ski resorts…. It’s kind of like just don’t fuck me over on the schedule or at least lemme know I’m about to be fucked next month, but give me some time to figure it out.

also, especially as things wind down it’s really nbd, they don’t have to pay you as their revenues decline in the off season. It’s almost like it’s by design ?‍♂️ they’re generally over staffed to get through the insane few weeks of peak season, then they don’t really need you that much.

Fly free on the wings of glory young buck…. Just give 2 weeks notice ?
 
working at a local family owned resort? maybe be transparent you’re leaving early.

working at vail or ikon or other corporate beasts? fuck em.
 
Just work hard, hold good relationships with everyone, let them know you are leaving for personal reasons and you will be fine.

that’s illegal, employers can’t withhold pay for time you worked. although i’m not saying that’s not how it can happen in reality.

i don’t understand why you’re defending/advocating for the employers in this thread. fortitude, self empowerment, duty, and your word? maybe that’s true to sticking with friends and other specific small business relationships. but in general for resort employment? do what’s best for you. employers don’t own you. like you have some moral obligation to stick with a shitty minimum wage job? no way.

How'd you get away with keeping your employee pass? That's the only thing keeping me from quitting my job atm lol
 
They don’t actually take your employee pass at vail, at least when I worked there. They just turn it off. I’ve seen managers forget to turn them off and the employee kept using the pass after they quit. Even on bad terms too.

You didn't steal shit sounds like you put in a few shifts to earn it. Vail dragged me across the country, gave me no employee housing, and shut off my pass. Fuck them evil pricks.
