Quitting high school sports

I'm a sophomore in high school. I play hockey, but I'm really contemplating giving it a break. I want to play but it just takes so much time and effort. An 1 hour to 3 hours 5-6 days a week gets tiring. I didn't go to practice today and I realized how much time I would have if I didn't play hockey. Its just such a big commitment. I know I could be doing other things such as progressing in skiing or getting a job. But the thing is, I feel if I quit I would regret it later on in life because supposedly high school is the best four years of your life. I don't want to regret my decision later on. Help me out newschoolers. What would you do?

i quit hockey in grade 9 after playing since kindergarten so i could snowboard more. i'm in my 3rd year of university now and just recently started regretting the decision

Dude seriously keep playing. Later on you will always have to be looking for a job and have to pay bills and have taxes and all the other shit, I would kill to be able to play high school sports again. They were the best and if you think your going to regret it later on, you probably will. Don't worry, ns's isint going anywhere and neither is the porn so play hockey.

If you love it and have a passion for it, keep playing. And If you don't then there's really no reason to continue playing

I played lacrosse from 1st grade to sophomore year. A part of me definitely wishes I hadn't quit, especially since my team won state right after I quit, but in reality I was not having fun playing anymore and personally was being wrecked by the stress of school, work and lax (not to mention having no time for skiing or socializing) If you truly don't enjoy playing anymore, stop, but if you still have a little heart in it I would say to continue playing, you might regret it in the future if you don't.

High school is NOT the best 4 years of your life. Not even close. You'd have to be a complete loser of an adult to actually have this be true. I do see your point about possibly regretting not playing though since you can only play high school hockey while you're in high school. If you'd really rather be skiing though, then do that instead. Unless you're concerned about your future student loan debt burden, I wouldn't worry too much about working while in HS though. Most of the jobs high schoolers can get during the school year suck ass because of severe limitations imposed by labor laws. If anything, play hockey or ski in the winter and work during your summer break when you can get a full time job and make decent money.

I'm 3 years out of highschool and would have DEEPLY regretted it if I didn't play. Trust me, you'll miss it if you give it up. Unless you straight up hate the sport then give it up. I quit basketball as a sophomore.. no regrets, but I would hate myself if I gave up baseball too. Hated basketball, loved baseball.

I almost quit playing football my sophomore year, I decided to suck it up and continue. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. It is a lot of work and commitment, but you will be glad you finished.

Dude no way, that's just what people say when their lives suck because they never left the shitty small town they grew up in. Go skiing, move away and see new places when you graduate, and you'll look back on high school 2 years from then and laugh at yourself and everyone else for how lame you were

Having stuck with high school sports, I still wish I would have been more active

My vote is that you keep playing as long as your heart is in it

I played sports all 3 seasons of all 4 years, plus skiing on the weekends, and gymnastics classes after school sports. If you love it, you will make time.

Plus, you really aren't going to have as much free time at college as you think. Play sports while you can.

with most people, high school sports are about the highest level you'll ever play at. after high school it becomes more tedious to play a sport because it usually isn't just brought upon you like in high school. you have to find a team, pay to sign up, then work it into your schedule.

play now, because in a few years you're probably not going to have the time or money or whatever to play.

I was a D1 athlete for 2 years in college and decided to quit. I had a good time and a lot of success but in the end I didn't think it was healthy that I dreaded practice so much. I didn't want to be incredibly unhappy for 30 hours a week and have that take over my life and make me a completely different person with no energy or emotion. I also lost a ton of respect for my coach and know he will never change his methodology eventhough the sport is changing rapidly. So yeah, if you hate it as much as I did, go for it. Be happy

Bump I still have not decided. I feel like I may regret it but I really want the free time to do other things.

"Quit? You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer, all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and I won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying from that's keeping you from the finals?"

different "sport", but you get the idea.

To finish that quote,

"Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life. But good luck to you Peter. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever."

Now, I'm not entirely familiar with the us/canadian system of high school sports, but can't you just drop down into a team with the battlers/hacks and just fuck around and have fun playing sport?

if not, and you hate the pressure that it puts on you, why not play beer/social leagues after you finish? It's always good fun to play team sports

I'd give this advice for any high school sport, but just stick it out and play. You're not really going to have the opportunity to be on a team and play organized sports after hs, so just do it. You won't regret playing later.

Question for you: If you did not play or quit your high school sport did/would you regret it?

my highschool hockey team lost in the state final my junior year, the last year i played. they won states the following year. despite not being on the team for their win, i don't regret quitting one bit

Im a senior in uni and already miss playing polo and swimming..stay in, you aint got any other shit to do

I use to play organized sports and realized they weren't for me. Worrying about grades with added sports made time on the slopes and at the skatepark limited.

just find a place to play pickup games when youre in the mood to play If you dont want to give it up completely. still have fun fun with it but dont let it go. ever. I made that mistake with baseball.

dude if you dont play any sports at a given time you really arent doing much for yourself. you have the free time. i play a winter sport in college and still find some time to ski and do work

I stopped playing hockey a while back and it's one thing I really regret , a lot of my ex-team mates are getting drafted in the nhl and qmjhl and I can't help but wonder what if ?

plus hockey is a great sport , if I could go back , I would not quit

Hockey is just WAAAY to time consuming to be any fun. Quit Hockey and try something else.

You probably won't be on the same level, but you'll have just as much fun.

Not playing soccer In HS was a great choice for me. It was just taking wayyyy more time then I wanted to give. Gave me more time to focus on school, skiing, friends, my artwork, and other activities it was taking time away from. Plus I can always still go join in pick up games. Not saying you should quit, but it went well for me.
