Quit my job poll?

lookin for some insight. I currently work at a bike shop that's 30 minutes away from my house and have been there since basically the end of last ski season. at first I didn't mind the commute, it was a chill way to start/end my day. but since the beginning it has worn me down more and more. I spend way too much money on gas, commute cuts into my personal life too much cuz I don't get home from work until like 7, and I do not make that much money there to even warrant the commute. the only real upside is gear discounts and the ppl I work with are real nice folks.

my frustration with this came to a head last night when I obliterated a deer on the highway and mentally shook myself up quite a bit, and now I'm out a vehicle besides borrowing my mom's truck.

Idk, I have 2-3 weeks until the ski hill opens, I usually work as a lifty and make a lil more money than I do at the bike shop, plus I don't have to commute anywhere cuz I live like 10 minutes from the hill.

I'm strongly considering asking my mgr at the hill to see what kind of pre-opening work they need help with, and if they got something then saying fuck it to the bike shop job early and quitting and save myself a couple tanks of gas

kinda slightly traumatized on night hwy driving and the last thing I wanna do is drive home again on the freeway at night

As the deer rudely put into stark terms for you, commuting to a bike shop job has some serious drawbacks.

Are you in a small town situation where there aren't other opportunities nearby? Besides the ski hill?

Sorta yeah, after the hill closed the bike shop was like the first job I saw that was available that didn’t sound super shitty. Pretty much all the open jobs in my town are food service and I wasn’t about to do that shit again….

I had considered landscaping stuff or the like which was the other alternative to the bike shop, but the homies at the bike shop called louder

If you are in your 20s I would say that working a job that gives you a tight community and a fun positive work environment is worth something. I have a friend that worked at Starbucks until he was 30, he made decent money for coffee shop work and used their tuition program to get his degree in Economics, he now is a data scientist and couldn't be happier. I think more important to what you are doing now, is thinking about what you want to do in the future and what thing are you doing on a weekly basis to get you 1% closer to that

landscaping could be kind of a move depending on what type it is (landscape construction > property maintenance imo) and how much it pays. or if you have a golf course nearby you can make decent cash mowing greens. and of course both have the added benefit of not having to deal with customers all day

30 minute commute isn't the worst for a ski town tho, most of my resort jobs have been 20-30 minute drives

I grew up in deer country. My parents have smoked a bunch between them and totalled a few cars. I did pretty well but finslly got one while visiting a few years back.

Half hour isn't too bad of a commute but it def depends on your feels, the pay, and the drive. A deer taking out your car sucks.

If you only have a couple weeks before ski season maybe just rock it till the end or take a lil break between seasons

Working at Crystal people would have to dodge the elk at night. Man those things will fuck up your car.

Idk i totally get it. I like way smaller commutes these days. Have commuted to a mtn that was hour 20 away. Was living at home still so free rent.

You're fine whatever you decide on this. The bike shop will prolly be slowing down this time of year anyway, you're already planning on working at the ski hill, ski hill is closer.

Good luck! Hopefully your car isn't too bad.

thanks for the insight homies! im putting in my 2 weeks tomorrow but I am just gonna stick it out till the hill opens up cuz I need to have some sort of income even if gas costs eat up a lotta the money that doesn't go to bills lol

but yea once the ski hill is rollin I'll be able to actually have dispensable income again and also not be doing soul crushing retail work

Definitely a little late, but landscape is pretty chill for next summer. You can work with a company, or even find your own gigs.

Gutters have been paying real nice this time of year. I charge avg 60 bucks, only take offers on shallow roofs and use a leaf blower. Done in under 30 min including cleanup.

Do you run your own? I been thinkin bout doing something like that, like gutters, leaves, other random shit I can do with a ladder and some basic power tools

If you can switch jobs without too much time unemployed then hell yeah man! Commute sucks I have a 30m commute too and it feels like once you make dinner you have no time to chill. Also outdoor work is always nicer I find. Hope you fix your car up soon!

Exactly, I tried working with a company, but fixed pay and shit work that burned me out quick. Was basically just hauling rocks and shoveling dirt.

So much better finding your own or on apps like task rabbit, and the work is very easy. if you have a truck or a vehicle that can tow a uhaul trailer, junk hauling is nice money as well.

Also I planned my days around skateparks if I could and brought my bmx out for little sessions every so often which was killer.

This basically happened to me. Had a job that paid ok with a 45 min commute. I'd been on the fence about leaving but the car accident I got in driving home was the last straw and I quit like a week later. I make way more money now with a 5 min commute and coworkers that I actually respect. At least you hit a deer and not a moose.
