Something that can’t be talked about enough IMO, especially in the age of social media skiing, but the fact that we get all these sick ass videos year after year FOR FREE is quite amazing. Big ups to people like Emmett and Dan for finding riders and creators’ projects. Dudes could be trying to be greedy with the followings they have grown, but they invest it right back into the community and gives us the opportunity to watch some real memorable stuff. I think it’s so important that these guys are keeping it real, along with ON3P, Line, Surface, and any other company funding their riders to go make street videos and then some.

yeah, nothing is free, and if you’re buying skis from Vishnu or a hoodie from Arsenic I guess that’s your “fee” but

1. You’re not forced to

2. if you do, you receive a quality product that always opens up some doors for new friends

3. It feels so good knowing that your money is allowing crews to put out some of your favorite content.

All as it should be. Thank you to everyone in our little community I think it’s really fucking sick right now.

For the level of influence Dan and Emmett have, they're super down to earth. I went to Vermont and had about 5 RANDOM people pull me aside to talk about arsenic. Hell, even my WAITRESS at the restaurant I went to one night said "nice hat". I see a minimum 10 pairs of vishnus at pretty much any east coast mountain I go to. Despite all that I guarantee if I shot either one of them a DM right now on ig they'd be more than happy to talk.

Yea wee need to appreciate that everything‘s free, but i would say at the moment there’s to much going on generally in the ski community.

facts dan even responded to my dms

You're 100% right.

Back in the dark ages you used to have to buy movies just to see any street skiing.

Now just about all of that content is free. That makes viewing street skiing way more accessible than it used to be and motivates even more people to get out and create street content.

I really hope that some of these guys are getting compensated for street videos because none of it is easy. Easily an average of 2-3 hours of work for each 5 second clip you see in a street video.

For now, let's just be thankful that ski videos aren't linked to a subscription based streaming service.

Free stuff is dope, but I would LOVE to see projects do an early physical media release.

I would 100% pay 30 or 40 bucks for a dvd of a top tier movie like forre or magma, especially if it came with posters and stickers or other fun goodies, like a zine with written stories about making the video. I think L1P did this for turbo. I just got a vinyl in the mail and it came with a big poster, so fun especially when you aren’t expecting it. Also dvd BONUS FEATURES are rad af, like the magma boys could totally do a dvd release and put all of their vlog content in the bonus.

releasing stuff for free is always critical, but I think more crews should consider doing a physical release a couple months in advance for the diehard fans

When I was 18 I messaged someone I looked up to in skiing and never got a response. Among a few other experiences back then, sometimes skiing felt like it was excluding me. All I ever wanted to to be a part of it all. Doing my best to be the change I always wanted to see. And now even coming up with things I couldn’t have imagined before. Thank you all so much.

Please enjoy all the great videos this fall. Watch them with a few homies gathered round your disgusting coffee table. Start talking bout how you are gonna hit spots. Watch em again. And then go get broke off on a down rail soon as the snow flies. That’s what we here for!!

Pros these days seem wayyyy more likely to talk to fans, I dm a ton of people and always get super friendly responses. Love the current scene in our sport it's super dope compared to others, we should never take it for granted

skiing is not dead. op is right. there are people who prop up our community, and you should support them if you can. financially or through engagement. whatever works for you.

stuff has been amazing this year. i haven’t been around for too long, but it feels like the ski community is in a great spot for the most part :))

It's always hype seeing someone rocking an Arsenic hoodie or something. It's a great conversation starter especially because all of these companies put out free videos that you both have probably seen.

Any "free" videos by a brand selling stuff is simply advertising. The cost is accounted for in their product pricing or written off come tax season.

Hot take but I miss when you had to pay for ski movies. My buddies and I would take turns being the ones to purchase and we'd all meet up and watch. Even if they charge for the first few months and then release later for free. If the product is free, you are the product.

I mean yeah obviously, any content that features a sponsored skier is essentially an ad

yeah came here just to say this. as a middle class penny pincher yes i enjoy free in general but having to pay for a movie made it a lot more special straight up. of course this has as much to do with the development of the internet and social media but i do miss those days as well.

I'm with you here. I actually really like it when you have a paid release and then release the video online later. Everyone gets to watch for free but the people who want to watch early or give support can buy it if they want. I have fond memories of when I paid for interpretation and invited some homies over and we watched it on my birthday. Still one of my favourite videos. I'd be down for more DVD releases like what sangwich and hellgate do, especially if you get a photobook or poster or something.

This is every ski movie ever dude, why do you think a Red Bull sponsored video has mostly red bull athletes? Releasing a free video that is supported by sponsors is by far one of the best ways to distribute content for at least 10 years now.

Ski movies have always been greatly supported by brand sponsorships, this meta take is forcibly edgy for no reason.

90% of the movies being released are produced by people who I can promise you are not getting paid at all, a majority of this industry is fueled by passion, and the big companies releasing vids for free is objectively good, I'm never gonna buy line skis but I do love watching their riders so how can it possibly be a bad thing that I don't have to pay to watch LTC or Daycare?

eteeth has his fourth eye open (already knows we are the product). Don't trust the conglomerates, they want to sell you toothpaste (flouride!!!)

Thank you eheath for repeating exactly what I said. I'm simply pointing out the irony in having appreciation for "free" content that this thread is on about. That isn't to say the content isn't sick, just that there's a reason and its motive beyond making you feel good. If there's a sponsor, there's some compensation, no matter how small. Getting free gear is compensation. If there's no sponsor then you got people garnering for views to build their name. There's few who do it just to do it and those few are likely ns users.

What's your point? You want a congratulations for making a video for fun? Cause nobody's ever done that?

Every video I’ve made was done 100% for fun. I think that’s the bare minimum and then people are lucky and/or talented enough to have sponsors, whether it’s cutting them a huge paycheck every year or just pitching in for the Airbnb, to hop aboard.

I made plenty of videos for fun, that's not the point, I don't get what that dude is trying to prove, this wasn't aimed at you at all.

Op does. Are you challenged?

I still don't understand what you're trying to prove, of course there is a reason brands sponsor a video, it's advertising, we all know this already.

Since you're clearly slow, I'll put it together for you. Op created an appreciation thread about free ski videos. Everyone ate that shit up like the videos are out of the goodness of the industry's hearts. I said that's a load of shit. It's all advertising. Then you quoted me, saying the exact same concept I already said. I'm pointing out how stupid this thread is and you missed it by a mile. Sheesh.

You clearly missed my point entirely. All ski movies have been supported by sponsors, you used to pay for the same thing, it's just a different time in content distribution.

Free content is great, you're a doofus for thinking otherwise.
