Question About Smart Phones and Data Plans

If I were to buy a fancy touch screen phone off the internet for T mobile, would i be able to just put my sim card in the phone and use it without having to pay for a data plan?

I just cant afford the extra 30 or 40 bucks a month to have a fancy phone.

but whenever i'm working there's always wireless internet i could connect to, and it would just be handy to have the other aspects of a smart phone.

any help is appreciated.

I can't be 100 percent sure, but I think if you buy the phone from T Moble themselves then they will make you get a data plan. I know when I had my upgrade a upgraded from a shitty slide phone to a Blackberry Bold and they have like a minimum data plan you have to get.

But, if you buy the phone from an outside third party you can do whatever you want. Before I upgraded I got an unlocked iphone to use while my phone was broken and I just used it on wifi.

Hope that helps

i have a blackberry with no data plan but i can still use WIFI to access the internet. It was a setting that i had to change it from hotspot browser to local or something along those lines, but it worked. I think you'll be all set.

thanks guys..

also, i'd really like to get the droid x2. there's not anyway that would work on t mobile right?

Depends on the phone. Most android phones you will have to have data, as that is how the phone is based.

Blackberrys are ok and will work with out data, but you dont have any touchscreen options.

I know that the data plans are less than 30 though.. I would do some research.

i just know that if i got a restricted data plan, it would get used too much and would end up costing me more.

the only network worth flashing phones to is cricket, otherwise most things dont work or it can be done.

as far as changing your plan, im 99% sure that you will have to go with the 79.99 plan. but what you could do for the same price is switch to sprint, get a $125 credit for bringing your number over, get everything unlimited other than 450 landline mins, and not have your data throttled back after 2gb. for the same price. not to mention a better phone

dude im doing the same thing. as long as it's an unlocked phone you should be fine. i got a new droid from craigslist, if you get them in canada they all come locked to telus, and they are hard as hell to unlock so i'm just going to use a sim card from telus. i don't have to buy a plan because i didn't get the phone from them

Tmobile requires a data plan for smart phones.
If you purchase a phone with out a contract, the phone will work fine, as will the wireless on it.
If you do purchase a phone, make sure that it is either unlocked and uses a sim card, or meant for tmobile.
If you purchase a phone and you think you may want to use it's 4g/3g abilities some day... make sure you get a phone meant for tmobile.
