Question about hair clippers.

So, I got my hair cut today, as I looked like a fucking moron. I asked for my usual, "3 on top, 2 on the sides." I thought that it meant about finger width on top, little bit shorter on the sides.
Nay.
I pretty much have a fade right now. Short as shit. So, I guess my question is, how long should hair be if I asked for "3 on top, 2 on the sides"? Was I mistaken about what I must usually get when I get my hair cut? Or was this new barber fucked?

I pay the 10 or 11 bucks to go to fantastic sams for my once a year cut. I show them an old pic from my drivers license and tell them I don't know what thats called, but I want it. So far they haven't botched it.
 
if your dad has a razor, just have him or someone at home cut your hair, so then you can keep cutting it little by little till its at the right length
 
2 is a quarter inch, 3 is 3/8's of an inch. Most reputable barbers go by clipper guard length. Don't worry, short hair is the shit.
