PSA: WEAR A HELMET

2 CU students have died this month skiing, both of them not wearing helmets. Wear your helmets people it’s not worth the risk.

some fellow skier last season seriously injured his head from hitting a tree branch going through some glades. people will always argue that wearing a helmet is a negligible difference and the accident type, conditions. I always wear a helmet skiing regardless

I've broken a few helmets. One completely in half. Well actually still connected by a few inches of plastic, but pretty fucking broken.

I'm sure my head wouldnt have fared any worse because helmets are useless as some people would say.

Personallyif you dont want to don't. Do whatever. I know Im going to keep wearing a helmet everytime I go out .

Damn that's crazy, never heard about those kids dying this year...

I used to be very anti-helmet, hated these threads. 3 concussions later, I never ski without one. I know, I know, HeLmEtS dOn'T pReVeNt CoNcUsSions blah blah. All I know is taking any solid hit to the dome will make you re-evaluate your stance on them. They lessen minor impacts and prevent pretty diabolical shit from happening to your skull. Also, they're warm.

Someone reading this right now is probably thinking, "fuck off, internet helmet person. I do what I want." You do you man, but just think about it. Life's too short to be shitting in diapers at the ripe old age of 25 because you thought it looks/feels better to ride without one. Your folks don't wanna see you like that, your girl doesn't wanna see you like that, and strangers on the internet don't even wanna see you like that. It could be way worse too- that's like one of the better scenarios. You can die from a lot of dumb things while skiing, sure, but this one is your call... and it would be terrible to succumb to something totally preventable, like a skull fracture. No parents should ever have to outlive their kids.

i once hurt my ribs and someone asked me if i wore a helmet. but yeah, helmets are important for stickers. gotta get that nascar sponsorship

I've concussed myself through my helmet. I don't like to think about how bad it could have been without one. There's no reason not to wear one if you're getting sendy.

Have you tried a MIPS equipped helmet? I'm assuming your second statement is sarcasm, correct? If not, the helmet broke taking the impact and preventing it from transferring to your head.

I always wear a helmet with the exception of about 3 times when I’ve forgotten it.

Helmets do prevent concussions and other head injuries.

Used to not wear a helmet. One day I decided to actually wear one since I was trying some new stunts. Long story short smacked my head on a rail. Got a nice concussion and cracked the helmet but it would have been my head had I not been wearing it. Now I wear a helmet all the time, unless I'm just scootin around taking pictures. It's like a seatbelt. If you've got it, wear it, cuz it might save your life. It's a small sacrifice to make for safety

My 2nd day ever skiing, I got crushed by a snowboarder who was going too fast to control himself. He ran straight into me and I woke up with a group of like 30 people around me. I bit almost all the way through my tongue and my helmet was absolutely destroyed. That ugly $40 helmet probably saved me a trip to the hospital and I was back skiing 2 weeks later. It isn't always you that causes a crash. Just like driving, there will always be idiots out there.

I wear a helmet while cross country skiing. its just unsafe to not wear a helmet:(

I'm gonna go on a limb here and say you're the only cross country skier on this site

Wear a helmet, don't wear a helmet... Your choice. Natural selection in its most modern form. Sure you can die with a helmet on, but there's plenty more injuries you could die with a helmet off that you could probably walk away from if you had a helmet on. Don't believe me? Go out side and bang your head on the concrete. See how good it feels. Now imagine that 5 times faster or with a tree branch in your skull.

Honestly helmets add to style. In some cases they’re more stylish than going bucketless tbh. But yeah why take the risk cause if you’re sitting in your bed just laying there like a vegetable or something not even being able to move you’re gonna wish you wore that little piece of plastic and styrofoam on your head.

Yeah, in threads about helmets people try and say that they do nothing and their snapback works just as well

I always wear a helmet. They hold your goggles better, you can adjust the vents so your head is always a nice temp and it protects your brain. I remember tree skiing once and i caught the end of my pole on a tree and the top of the pole slammed into my helmet and knocked me over. I would have been pretty well screwed without it. I also wear an articulated spine protector I picked up on sale on Steep and Cheap a few years ago. It is a nice insurance for when you are skiing over rocks etc

Did they die due to head trauma?

One of them did, the report isn’t out on the second one yet but I’ve heard from friends that he wasn’t wearing a helmet and hit a tree.

Yeah ever since I went night skiing at Brighton and saw some snowboarder blast out of a tree path, catch an edge and knock himself out on the hard pack, I've always worn a helmet. Dude bled for a good 5 min before ski patrol got to him

I love when I ask people why they don't wear a helmet and they reply, "I don't fall." like dude your a kook just for saying that so obviously you do and a probably more likely to get injured. Also helmets look fly.

Cannot relate

Source: never fallen

Also people hitting trees really isn't a good look even with a helmet on. Without one, yeah, fuck that. Again not trying to preach, I just remember the usual crowd talking about how helmets have pretty much no value.

Most of my friends who don't wear helmets have never had a major head injury. Hell most of the people I know have never had a major head injury. You don't need one to ride, but if shit goes really south it's nice to have.

Magnus wears a helmet

I'll take your entire stock!

for real though, last year in Japan i ducked under a rope that looked loose, was actually taught af, slingshot me back into the ice and rung my bell good and proper. if i wasnt wearing my helmet i would have been knocked out for sure.

i only don't wear a helmet on the extra warm spring days, it gets hot in Australia...

You know if this thread would have been made 3-5 years ago, half the responses would have been people shitting on helmets. Everybody hit their heads a few times and grew up lol
