Pros and Cons to having jumps in the terrain parks

So for my final in my college english class, I have to write a persuasive essay about something I am "passionate" about. I really want to write about why ski resorts SHOULD have jumps (big or small) in the parks... I can also get like 90 extra credit points if I send this to a ski resort.

My question to y'all, What are some of the pros and cons to having jumps in parks at resorts? And I'm thinking maybe something more than the classic "insurance liability". Thanks in advance

Most mtns have jumps these days even small ones. What's your argument against it? What would a park be if it didnt have a jump?

Also idk that making a ski area second guess the liability of having a jump is worth passing an english essay.

What has you set on this topic?

How about rails longer than like 15ft so many hills I go to have such short rails. Maybe it’s just cause my mtn has multiple 35-40ft rails that are always in

Honestly my prof is a pretty big skier from breck and she kinda chose the topic for me. The mountain I’m at doesn’t have jumps but it has a shit-Ton of rails (that are sometimes well built), from what I’ve seen when people don’t have professionally built jumps, people will begin to build there own which are normally terribly built and people get hurt on em....

does that answer the question at all?

So less of your essay would be about the actual argument of having jumps but putting money into a park with good jumps so it’s safe and good for progression

More or less, that why I’m looking for some pros and cons so I can better formulate an argument... ya feel?

That makes a lot more sense. So it's more an analysis towards why they should build jumps/a park. I thought you were just writing a general "should parks have jumps, maybe they should maybe they shouldn't" and sending it to a random ski area.

Most mountains have gotten into some form of parks but def some of the more natural vibe mountains stay away from it.

It can depend on terrain and cat resources. Some big mountain vibe mountains don't have a ton of terrain to put jumps, and some also run very minimal grooming. But yeah idk the mountain and jumps are cool.

I grew up at a mountain with no park so I understand the feels of diy booter lyfe. Just try to steer away from making it to much of a callout. I'm sure you're on it, but I've seen some people approach mountains pretty aggressively about getting a park or a bigger park.

Good luck with the essay and the parks!

True. It depends on the place. It's nice to have a mix, but a lot of mountains people don't hit the bigger features very often. Or they built a bunch of similar size rails getting into parks years ago and haven't upgraded.

15' is small for biggest rail for sure. I remember Gore in NY we used to joke about having a bunch of 8' flat bars when I rode there a bunch/worked there. Def nice to have variety and honestly combo features don't work as well most of the time. In terms of putting multiple short rails together to make a longer one.

big jumps are more funner and u wont can urself so hard u cant have kids

there i wrote ur paper

Dude short rails make me annoyed are so pointless like a 12ft long waterfall that they have to put another 6ft long tube after causes it’s just one drop and to short to trick for most people. But it’s kinda fun having a bunch of short rails some places make sick combos and transfers. My home hill does that with our shorter rails in our big park which is nice

Yeah they can work depending on what they are and how they're setup. I feel like an elbow tube or dfd will always ride better than one built out of multiple small rails, but gotta make use of what you have.

I do like the trend that parks moved in where rails got longer and more techy but lower to the ground. Honestly my rail game has been whack this year, I just haven't ridden park enough.

maybe someone already said this but if theres no jumps IN A TERRAIN PARK people are gonna build jumps that are unsafer than typical unsafe jumps and theyll get hurt and sue the mountain

Cons: Jumps take up room that could instead be used for rails

Have fun riding around with ripped out/cracked edges, stuck to the surface of the snow.

ill be reduced to kissing the sky while i am weightless in the air on a 40 ft kicker, free to do whatever i want while the thots watching me get wet as fuck before chasing me down to the lift.

and my edges look brand new.

but seriously rails are only fun if you are a complete fucking pussy when it comes to jumps.

translation: dolan can’t hit rails

You can put a lot more features in with no jumps, sometimes jumps are just a waste of snow if they’re improperly built. Jump vs. little rail/jib garden that you can link lines with? I’m going with choice B all day. Kids get fucked up 10x more on jumps anyway I’d say. Even small ones. But for whatever reason I never see anyone get seriously hurt on rails/jibs, let alone get hurt at all

I dont any more. I used to but for whatever reasons i simply would not enjoy skiing if my skis edges were fucked up. It would be trying tk have fun skateboarding with one of your trucks loose and wiggling around. Like yeah you can still do it but how could that possibly be fun....

As someone who has gotten used to skiing with full missing edge underfoot on all 4 sides, it’s only fun if you’re a hardcore rail rat. Nothing gets sticky. I actually like it so much I ripped edge underfoot out with saw/pliers on a new pair of V’s I got a few weeks ago. Epoxied that gap right back together and pretty much made the first ever Vishnu edgeless underfoot. In slush or real soft stuff it ain’t bad. Anything else it’s sketch as hell obviously.

however I’ve ridden the rest of the hill with fucked up edges and couldn’t tell a difference, I was still holding an edge fine even on firm stuff. I honestly don’t think rails detune your edges down a whole lot, if they wear the right way they will just have a similar level of sharpness, but angled up a little bit, a little bit of unevenness, and maybe a tiny burr on the edge of the edge.

i never thought this would happen but i agree

True. If you have just rails people will hit rail takeoffs and sidejump. And though there's usually far less catastrophic shit on rails there been a few bad ones from sidejumping including a massive ski industry lawsuit over a kid that didnt even hit the rail.

I agree though, sometimes less is more with junps if they aren't going to be nice.

Mtns have been building less junps for a while now and filling our that space with rails. Ibviously a big increase in snow features, flow parks, bowly type stuff etc recently but still a lit of rail.

The balance differs everywhere but reading the cliental you have, if you're trying to draw more of a different demographic, and then building the best that works with that and the style and goals of your mtn.
