Promoting Yourself? Making Money?

I would like to start and profit from what i love to do.

I'm not the best at filming or editing, but i have fun doing it and i think im learning pretty fast. My question to all of you expert filmers is how did you get your name out? What stepss did you take to pick up your first jobs? How did you get your name out? How did you advertise yourself?

Im not expecting to make a living, just make some money before i head to college. Im really open to film anything. What are the most popular things that people need filmed?

Any suggestions or comments would be great!

Best thing to do is to make a website, get a portfolio going and start getting contacts - talk to people.

Start talking to people. Offer to do gigs for cheap or nothing. Once you have a bit more of a portfolio you can start charging more.

practice. study it (school or college?). reels. portfolio. who you know/contacts. website. facebook. thats what i can think of.

1. Make videos.

2. Make connections.

I wasn't really that good at filming and editing when I got my first "product paying" jobs, but I got them because I made videos and made connections. If you're wanting to do work in the ski industry, start with product. Its easy for companies to pay in product (no tax, pretty cheap, no need to talk to investors) then, when you have built up a resume/portfolio, you can start charging companies.

Send out 10 emails a day explaining what you are doing to companies that can profit from your work. That what I did, just play it like an odds game

Build a miniature portfolio and meet people. The more people you meet the better chance you have to getting a job.

I got my small ESPN gig just by knowing someone (I was asked to do work for them and they never saw any of my work).

Be patient to.

Also try to learn as much as you can. Be interactive and read informative websites. Create a twitter and follow certain people and companies (this may sound dumb, but you will be shocked how much I have learned from reading things that were on my twitter feed).

Go to school for film. I thought this wasnt important at first, but I was REALLY wrong. Even talking to people at first, they are always excited to hear I am in film school.

Take any job you can but dont do it for too cheap. You dont really want a reputation as the guy who is cheap to hire, but you dont really want the opposite to (unless your work is worth it).

Go out and just film anything you can. From skating, to days at the river or lake, to festivals... ANYTHING. Its fun. An example would be Im making a video of my friends dog just for shits.

Just always keep yourself busy. Oh and try to stay away from the ski industry. If you find a job in it then AWESOME, but its hard to find something consistant and worth it. Take a non ski industry job over it.

Although, people are always impressed by ski videos, so its fun to show them.

Hope that helped some... Good luck!

my friend (milk.$), films events like weddings and and sports games etc then edits the footage and puts it on dvd, he also transfers vhs to dvd. makes a tidy sum i think. just make a webpage/portfolio for yourself

I have been looking very seriously into this lately. I pretty much hate the school I am at now and am definitely looking to transfer to somewhere for film this coming spring. Are there any public universities, preferably in New England, that have a good reputation for their film program? Right now I am looking at applying to Fitchburg State in MA and Keene State in NH. Just figured somebody in this thread might have a better idea than myself as to what schools have legit programs.

NYU if you got the grades. One of the best film schools and one of the best reputations in the nation. The guy who won best short at the oscars this year is currently a student at NYU
