Okay so I don't know if this is correct but this is what I interpreted from the movie:
The narrator is schizophrenic or has some sort of multiple personality disorder and he uses "Tyler durden" to perform different insane feats just to create chaos. And with project almanac it was on a much grander scale. I think it's when Tyler has a gun in the narrator's mouth he says something about creating order. The buildings that they are in are stock exchange buildings and Tyler believes that everyone there is corrupt and greedy for money so by destroying the buildings he will create peace.
