Project ABangs -- One More Season!

Alright everyone. I'll keep this short and sweet.

I'm pushing my 4th season with the abangs. I am not invested in these skis at all. They are mainly my park thrashers, early season rock skis.

I've already had to repair partial tip delam and an edge that was about to pull out.

Bases are getting pretty rough too.

That being said, I wanted to bring back the asthetics of the ski -- mostly as a fun project.

I hit the top sheets with an orbital sander starting off at 100 grit and moving to 220 until the graphic was removed.

I then hit it with a walnut stain. Had to let this soak longer than normal. The top sheet is very thin before it hits the layer of fiber glass. As such, it's not the best median to absorb the stain quickly.

After the stain set over night, I hit it with 4 thin coats of satin polyurethane clear coat and let that dry over night.

I had an extra sheet of grip tape lying around and decided to do a top sheet graphic in light of the "skateboard construction." Honestly reminds me a bit of Pollard's older graphics.

The grip tape will also help to protect the top sheet from my skis crossing. Again, not worried about the potential damage on the bases from the grip tape.

I would say the final product is how these skis should look from the factory. The wood grain is pretty kick ass! These things will make great wall hangers at the end of the season. Enjoy!

Reminds me of the thread a while back where the op posted updates on his custom longboard grip tape jobs and graphics and it was super sick. You should post some more custom graphic jobs!

I would recommend a darker stain! It will hide some of the ink left behind from sanding.

Also buy more sandpaper than you think you'll need. The wood is super tough and ruins sanding discs quickly.

I would advise using an orbital or some sort of power sander. I started by hand, gave up, went to Home Depot and bought a $20 power sander. Saved A TON of time.

Move the sander often. Try to avoid focusing on one spot for too long. You'll begin to expose the carbon ollie bands/fiber glass layers which DOESN'T absorb stain well.

TAKE YOUR TIME. Let the stain sit for a day or longer before hitting it with a clear coat (apply, wipe after 15 minutes, let sit for 24 hours). Use thin clear coats allowing ample time in between to dry before applying more.

Let the skis cure for several days before taking them to slopes.

Enjoy mate! Let me know if you have any questions along the way. It was a fun project.

Update on these?

Still kicking it! The grip tape held up surprisingly well. Same with the finish on the top sheet. The grip tape aided in protecting it.

Something to keep in mind. I only had a chance to use these a handful of times since refinishing them.

I'll post a few pictures when I get the chance.

Definitely recommend the project if you have an old pair of Abangs laying around on their last leg.
