Pro skiers get underpaid?

WE NEED A $15 AN HOUR MINIMUM WAGE FOR PRO SKIERS. they are a historically disenfranchised group and as your president I will make sure thay are paid a LIVING WAGE. thank you for your continued support and if you wish to make a campaign contribution my venmo is pussy-slayer-6969

Niche sport equals to equivalent pay. Risk doesn’t always correlate to reward, but I’d say some pros have made off pretty well for themselves

I mean, a couple good comp finishes could set you up with some nice investment cash.

It was interesting to hear Phil talk about that in the Powell movement today.

as far as guys like Will Wesson. He deserves way more!

when was the last time you bought a ski movie op

If i paid for and went to 2 Romance premiers, how much of that money actually ends up in Level 1's pocket to distribute as needed (stays in industry) and how much goes to the venues (outside of the industry) ?

only way in skiing to make big stacks is winning competitions. Anything else are basically earnings where you're stoked that you end up neutral on your Income Statement excluding your non declared savings haha.

Which doesn't mean one is "craving on the floor living on the edge".

Will Wesson is probably the richest man in this corner of skiing. Unparalleled frugality.

This sounds interesting. What does he do for income, how does he practice being frugal?

I heard he only eats the Value taco$ from Del Taco and takes the bu$.

Everyone seems to know how much skiers get paid.. How much DO they get paid? Not talking comp wins, but sponsorship contracts that are more reliable income than comps. I have no idea. Skiing has to be about the least transparent industry for how much athletes get paid.

its because its different for literally every skier

Make a kickstarter so a bunch of teens can buy you a new bus

my impression from listening to a bunch of interviews is that most "pro" film skiers are making between 10 and 30 k (not including the gear they get, travel money, etc) with a few of the top guys making six figures.

I wonder if unionizing and collective bargaining could be useful, especially when dealing with large companies/corporations and organizations that exploit pro skiers (ie FIS, IOC). My understanding is most pro skiers are independent contractors and not full time hired employees, so unionizing could be really tricky.

Well no shit it's different for every skier, but that's not a reason this information isn't available.

there is , its called NDA within the contract :D

so helpful. Wonder why the secrecy in skiing. In pretty much every major sport all sponsorship deals and salaries are no secret.

Any Norwegians here? They could check the income of all skiers from that country here:https://tjenester.skatteetaten.no/

That would at least give a rough idea for those who are curious.

The secrecy is so the manufacturers don't have skiers freak out on them when ________ gets paid more than ________ even though __________ does so much more.

Subjectivity is what keeps freestyle skiers down. The real money is in racing, but even then only the tiptop really get paid

Paging [tag=247064]@PowellMovement[/tag] for ya - Mike, you often ask people on your podcast about money, that plus your experience with K2, could you please give us a range on a scale from average to Candide of how much a sponsored skier can make from endorsements?

It ranges from ~ 5k to 10k a year.

They get paid to fuck around on skis all day and smoke copious amounts of weed at night (and during the day for that matter)... can't really complain.

Thats what im saying, if i can sleep under a roof and get good food, thats all I could ask for if it meant i have access to state of the art training facilities and medical services and get to ski and smoke all the time

Im pretty sure kelly sildaru and sierra mistyquit make more than most male proskiers.

The real question is if you’re a pro skier, could you form your own company promoting yourself and write off all your non-sponsored expenses???

The real pros are all into fentanyl these days from what I hear.

This is essentially how they all do it in the US if they claim the income and file taxes. They are usually classified as independent contractors for tax purposes. From our experience the more seasoned and higher paid riders will organize their finances under an LLC they've created. The others will file as a sole proprietor similar to if you were a web design consultant or something being paid for a short term job.

Regardless of filing as a sole proprietor or LLC you can still write off any related expenses for your "job" of pro skier to offset your taxable income.

Same as Europeans

Many pro skiers don'ts smoke weed. Most "pro skiers" don't make enough money to sit around and smoke weed and "fuck around on skis" in fact many of them work other jobs in the summer to support their skiing career. Skiers used to make more money, but the industry also had more cash floating around. Brands barely need marketing anymore because of instagram and many people represent brands on large stages with zero cash compensation. Basically the system is pretty fucked for anyone trying to be a "pro skier" unless you're a top tier contest skier.

So pros are having financial adversity because of millennials sitting social media.

More or less, but I'd say all ages are to blame, boomers love FB, zoomers love tiktoc.

I hate it when I buy fentanyl and there’s some heroin in it.

In theory a single pill of solid fentanyl could get you high for a year. All you have to do is shave off a barely visible flake and dissolve it in a spoon.

or you could be an idiot and not do research about what you are putting in your body, dissolve the whole pill and die.

fentanyl is good for cautious addicts but bad for idiots. And idiots behavior/bad choices are what drives drug policy unfortunately.

fentanyl should be legal and adults who want to try it should have their use of it closely supervised by doctors in a safe medical clinic like they have in europe.

How much money do you get for getting gold at XGAMES?

Is it just a sponsor bonus and a medal?

$25k for gold in each event, except im not sure if knuckle huck was the same payout, but depending on the skier/sponsors you get sponsor bonuses for podiums, like many have said every skier has a different contract.

Pretty sure during Olympic years, those with olympic chances, especially once selected to go to the olympics, get much more money. Like in the 2-4x normal range iirc but not totally positive

there is nothing true about this statement at all. also you dont win money at the olympics

No, ive heard several people say this in interviews. I know the IOC doesnt pay athletes but when 2 billion people see the base of your poachers, K2 is going to pay the athlete a lot more
