Private web group websites?

A study group I am in want to start a private web group online (kinda like a cult on NS). We want it to be login based (with name and password) and maybe a chat room capability. Anyone know of anything like this? I know yahoo has something kinda like this, but want to hear from other ppl first. If you have experience with the yahoo one (or any really) please let me know of your experiences. Thanks a ton guys/girls.

at school we use this thing called moodle, but I have no idea if you have to pay for it and I'm assuming you wouldn't want to do that.

^This is awesome. It allows you to make your own social network like NS it also has IM like Facebook. I am in the middle of creating one myself.
