NS is there any thing you guys can share with me about how YOU mentally/physically prepare for bigg jumps?

Me Iam a good skiier and all but I dont push my limits on actaul giant jumps. I had a bad time casing a jump once and bruised my heel hella hard.

So please NS give me YOUR step by step maneuvaer to prep for a jump you havent hit b4?

(i know im gonna get some "just huck it. or balls up.)

turn your music up and stop thinking. also i find it better to not strait air it so you dont know how high you are. so do a 3 or a back if your comfortable being upside down first hit

Here's what I do before I try something huge and before comps....

1. Meditate (you might laugh, but it works for me)

2. Crank your tunes

3. Have someone call you a bitch or something to get you pumped

4. Visualize it in your head

5. Huck your meat

yeah you essentially have to sack up but just hit jumps until youre comfortable on them then go a bit bigger and bigger and so on. dont be afraid to go fast either. and you can just ask other people who are hitting it like how much speed you need etc.

close your eyes, go in the general direction of the jump, and open them when you think you are in the air.

what i either do is

visualize--- see yourself hitting the jump, actually imagine a real image. it really helps

OR

crank the tunes.. self explanitory, you won't have to pause, think. etc. you can't overthink a jump if you can't superconcentrate because of your music. not only will it pump you up, but help you not think of the consequences.

I have meditated actaully for the past 5 months since i got more in touch with my religion but i never throught of doing it on the ski hill. i will.

if i go to a mountain that ive never (or recently) been to, and they have rather sizeable jumps, what I usually do is ill hit smaller jumps within the park to get a feel for the snow and jumps there, work my way up, and just eye it and go for a larger one. Or I might ski by the jump perhaps once, take a look, but usually after hitting many jumps you can gauge them pretty well. Sometimes, you just have to hit it to find out what itll take.

prepare for impact ^

but seriously, you're putting too much thought into this. just stop over-analyzing everything, because you'll psych yourself out. just rip into the jump and hit it. visualize yourself clearing it, and don't freak out.

it always gets me more nervous waiting longer and watching more people hit a big jump before i first hit it, so try to be one of the first ones to hit it before your friends do

i actually don't mind guinea pigging jumps too much, once you get the first one out of the way, shits good to go.

That, and also couple times I'll ski down like I'm going to hit a jump right beside it, but look at it as you go by it. For me it helps kinda realize how it's going to throw me and how much speed I need.

yea its just last time i went to camp i cased it on a giant jump and bruised my heel really bad and i couldnt ski or walk right for weeks. and dont want that to happen again

Nah man, last time I just ripped into a jump blind I broke my back in 3 places. I overshot it so fucking far. I agree to a certain extent though. You can't analyz it to the point where you psych yourself out, but you definitly do need to analyz it.

FOR SURE, louder tunes for me make me more pumped than nervous and believe it or not spinning a 3 is alot easier than straight airing cuz u have something to do in the air, and just whatch a few people who look the same size as you who are hitting a big jump and just drop in....

remember what happens to other people doesnt mean its going to happen to you

i just really spend alot of time visualizing myself in the air on the jump, find a good speed to hit it at, and tell myself i need to push my skiin to the next level and bigger jumps is the only way, i really think the best way to get yourself to go big is to just relax and dont think of the worst case sencero

watch one person for speed. (only one, otherwise you get stuck watching up top and get psyched out)

close eyes and visualize

crank the tunes

drop and do a little dance, or little hops on the in run to get yourself pumped

i would but i dont no much more than u do.... u overshot it really fucking far right? and broke ur back in 3 places... thats about all i no

sry man i wish i could tell u more than u already know

I cased a jump early last season and did the same thing. there was a trace of snow on the jump so it slowed me down. It sucks cuz I was afraid to hit anything big after that. now I don't go unless I know I'll clear it. test runs help too.

Personally, before hitting a big jump I've never hit before, I'll watch a person hit it and see where he starts from to get the speed down. And see if he pops or not.

You can never be too careful. Watch people. But don't get nervous. When your watching people stomp the jump, just imagine that it's you doing that.

When you do finally get yourself into hitting that sick jump you've found, make sure 100% ready to hit it.

No regrets. That's how I roll.

Good luck.

1. watch people hit it first

2. ask them how far they landed down, etc. and remember the amount of speed they took in (ex. any speed checks, any carves, straight? etc.)

3. after the first two steps, you should have an idea of what its like

^2. i wasnt really thinking when i posted #2, but you probably wont be able to ask them so just guesstimate how far they over/undershot

ask some people where to start for speed, ask about the lip, even ski up the lip and stop at the top and check it out

ususally if im at another hill or something i watch someone hit it first but if there no one hitting it yet or something i just do a speed check then either straight air or 3. i think its easier to 3 a jump then to straight air it because you arent focusing on the actual jump so much

music on full

staring at the jump the whole time

think of what sick aerial moves i want to do before i hit it

pop off land clean and ride away

listen to music, take a deep breathe and just go for it and dont think about it, whats ever going to happen is going to happen

Don't be afraid to speed check the jump once or twice before you hit it if it's a high risk jump (or even if it just scares you a lot).

Also, if it's really sketchy, always make some sucker go before you.

1. listen to inspiring music

2. imagine how fun it will be

3. imagine telling your grandkids about it

4. imagine how good you will feel afterwards.

If you fall:

1. Imagine telling your grandkids about it (if you survive)

i don't think. i just.. go. if i am thinking, i think about how badass i'll be to the crowd watching. and the ladies. ya know, if you man up for the ladies, then they'll come flocking.

also, i may sound crazy, but i usually do a switch 180 the first hit. skiing backwards makes you more concious of speed, and it's realllllly easy to control how much spin you have while you're in the air.

and don't straight-air. i crash more on straight-airs than i do on 9's, no joke. i always end up popping wrong and landing backseat or something. at least do a 1, a switch 1, or a 3. pretty safe bet...

Before hitting anything, I take a look. It is just common sense to know what you are getting into. This creates a "wasted" park lap, but it really does make things a lot safer.

Then I visualize. I try to get rid of all of my fear or apprehension on the lift and before I drop in, so I can focus on the trick. It seems to work well for me, but it is an aquired skill and I do enjoy the mind game that I am pretty sure makes up something like 90% of high level skiing.

for jumps i've never hit: i first watch a couple of skiers go to see how the speed is. then ask the people what the speed's like (i.e. how many speed checks or turns). after that i speed check the jumps to guesstimate if i had enough speed, not an exact science, but it helps mentally anyway. then next run through i let someone else hit them then go, taking into account things like spinning or carving which reqire more speed. then i just do a straight air, usually messing around with twisters and spreads. then next run i work on grabs and just make sure of the speed. then im all warmed up.
