Pow Days inspire bravery in gapers. Why?

Today we had a pretty epic surprise pow day on Big mountain. I had a really fun day, but the carnage was off the charts today across the mountain. I saw five or six carts going down today. I maybe saw that many all year before today! There is also this very clearly expert area called the hellroaring basin. It doesn't open up until around 11-12 as ski patrol has to go through for avvy control. Anyways I was smoking my daily j at a smoke spot at the top of the basin and I just heard this bloodcurdling scream. There's a blue run that all tree runs funnel into in the basin, and this kid broke his leg somehow on that run. What is it about pow days that inspire such bravery in gapers? You'd think they would be immediately deterred seeing that pow takes some experience to ski in.

OMG HONEY THERE'S GONNA BE A BUNCH OF SNOW IN TAHOE LETS DRIVE THE ENTIRE EXTENDED FAMILY FROM SAN FRAN UP TO SQUAW TO SKI ALL FUCKING WEEKEND IT'LL BE AWESOME!!!

Gapers see snow in the forecast and think it will be the time of their lives and they go down steep slopes because "LOOK AT ALL THE POWDER OMG!!!" without thinking of their skill level then they sideslip the entire fucking run and then one of them wants to be a badass and tries to go straight and hits a tree then they get evacuated.

More snow = more people = more gapers = more dumbasses = more injuries.

Today I saw a guy send a cliff he had no business sending.

He stuck it with a minor concussion at least.

Ski resorts need crisis counselors at the top of these drops.

Snow is soft.

Yep. Snow is soft, people see lots of snow, they think it won't hurt when they fall. It's a little worrying that you weren't able to work this out for yourself, op. Don't go outside without a chaperone.

Idk man a few weeks ago I went night skiing and at around 9pm it felt like there was a thousand people skiing. Guess its because tix were only 30 bucks. It was icy as fuck and ski patrol was carrying people in stretchers all over the mountain kind of funny kind of fucked up, because a lot of gapers in jeans and sweatpants were just eating sooo much shit. I agree though, my friends that barely know how to ski only want to ski when it dumps snow, when in reality they get stuck and fall every 2 ft in the powder because they try to edge.

Idk if it's cuz I'm super stoned or what but I'm laughing my ass off thinking of some therapist with a couch at the top of cliffs and it is amazing

did you think maybe its not bravery but the fact that they just cant ski pow that well? its like the same thing in the spring when everything becomes slushy bumps. all the gapers getting hurt then cause they cant ski bumps.

It really comes down to the fact that they think skiing pow is cool, which it is, but the fact that the vast majority of people SUCK at skiing pow. If you're not a strong skier you won't be good in pow. You won't see a bad skier ski pow good.

Every single ski movie, every single marketing piece, every single media right now is pushing the idea that powder and out of bounds are the pinnacle of the snowsports experience.

I mean, it is.

How could they possibly not try to go off when that happens given everything they are told?

Without realizing the entire upper mountain will be closed all weekend :)
