Posession Charges

So today I was charged with posession of marijuana (1 gram) and also paraphanilia. I live in Minnesota and I'm 16 years old. On a legal standpoint, how fucked am I? Will this effect me later on in life? If you have been in a similar situation, how did it turn out? I hope your day hasn't been as shitty as mine.

It's best to escape the country at this point. Marihuana is a federal offense, so you're looking at 5-10 years, $100,000 bond at minimum. Say goodbye to your future. Hope it was worth it for some marijuanas

How old are you? first time i got caught i think i was 18, had a little under an eighth on me, i went to court and they let me do like 25 hours community service and they completely wiped it off my record. second time wasn't so lucky, but it's also decriminalized here in CT so it's going to be different for you. It was only a gram though, if the judicial system really wants to put you in there for 1 gram then that's fucking ridiculous. I just found this, i have no idea if it's a solid source or not, but it doesn't seem to be that harsh in MN for small quantities. http://www.drugpossessionlaws.com/minnesota/marijuana/

Seems like you're going to have to take a drug class, you'll get a fine, and carry a misdemeanor charge. if it was in your car though it looks like there's a chance for jail

Nothing is going to happen to you. You will get a fine for 750ish dollars and maybe community service. Probably just a fine under $1K though.

This is a good way to let people know they shouldn't listen to anything you have to say when related to a legal matter.

I'm in the exact same boat as you dude. On Friday august 30th I was charged for the exa t same thing, cept I live in Washington and I'm 17. Upon my parents request I spent the night In juvy, but since it was a three day weekend I sat in jail from Friday evening till Tuesday midday. It was my first crime so I got am automatic diversion, which means I need to complete 28 hours community service, attend a DUI victim/survivors panel, and go to a drug and alcohol evaluation to see if they need to check me into treatment or not( treatment is really only for kids who do "drugs", I only toke)I have 6 months to complete those things and once in do they will take it off of my criminal record

Shit, triple post but I forgot to mention, like the day before I went they changed the law in wa so paraphernalia is no longer illegal. Hope this info helps out dude

Assuming you were arrested by local police and not the ATF or FBI, You won't do any real time as a 16 year old. The law says you can, and in a worst case scenario you could, but anyone i know under 18 caught with a minimal amount of weed has never been in jail for more than a week. Most get community service or probation or some other kind of deferred sentence. You won't be charged with a "federal crime", you will be charged according to the laws of the state. Which also means you WILL be charged as a minor, which is great. It means the courts will see you have no history and be very willing to let you basically get off with a slap on the wrist. And while it could come out if you run for president, juvenile court does a decent job keeping your record stashed away for future employers to never see.

Honestly you have more to worry about with the cost of a lawyer and court fees, and the wrath of your parents, than real jail time.

One thing you gotta understand about being under 18 is you can't go to jail unless its a serious offense like killing someone or some shit. The absolute worse thing that could happen is a few nights in the juvenile detention center. Other than that, expect at least 6 months probation and possibly drug counseling. I know they do that here in utah for kids who get caught with weed.

except that you are underage which makes it illegal still anyway

OP, you are under 18, you will be perfectly fine. the worst that will happen is you might be put on probation and have to get UA'ed every once in awhile.

Thanks everyone for all the serious answers. It's making me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I guess all I can do now is wait for my court date and recieve countless lectures from my parents.

You will most likely get 3-6 months probation with drug testing and around 30 hours of community service. The 'pre-law' guy who said that you would actually do time for a gram of weed is fucking retarded.

i live in MA and ive gotten charged with possession under an ounce at school. I had a vape with .2 in it. I got suspended for 2 weeks. It could be different on the street but i got a 100 dollar fine, a mandatory 4 hour drug class, and 10 hours of community service.

keep your head up op, shit will be in the past before you know it.

wow where are the claims in this thread/

When 17 i got NY CPM, drug instruments, and controlled substance 2.

$500 fine / ACOD

Yeah dad paid 3g for a top attorney to sweep it under rug.

The consequences you guys face in here shines light on how lax Maine's marijuana laws are. A ton of my friends have been busted and for those under 18 they usually get a summons and some community service. Over 18, if you're in possession of under 2.5 oz it's a civil offense that carries a $350 dollar fine

Me being from Ohio when I got in trouble for possession I did some time in the slammer...It honestly is a slap on the hand..won't be too bad on the record I actually just recently got my record cleared on the state since I attended a community panel...Also I heard that if you get in trouble for marijuana type charges you can't get a loan from the government later on in life not to sure about that statement! Anyone feel free to correct or add on to this!

You lose Federal Aid (ex College loans) with adult drug charges

Youth offender, no record, 1marijuana... OP is safe

Doesn't mean your dad won't pull over on the way home and take off his belt.

Am I going to be the first one to point out it matters what state you're in. Different everywhere. In NY, it's a 150 dollar fine because it's decriminalized (they usually drop the paraphernalia charges). Google Minnesota minor marijuana laws

its not even a felony where you live.....iits a misdmeanor....

slap on wrist and slide card for payment

/endthread

i sympathize for those FL NSer's they can get a felony for just attempting to Purchase pot...

like reverse stings
