Pomoca Skins?

Hey there,

Just posting to see what you guys think about Pomoca from some of your own experiences? I just picked up a set after hearing good things and I'm coming off a set of BCA's (Contour) and some BD's (Glidelite & Ascension). Overall I'm pretty hard on the things, they usually last a season or two, and would love to hear some real-world feedback on durability, glue, tip/tail hardware etc.

Cheers

I own a set of Pomocas. Personally, I have always had the best experience with Black Diamond skins since their glue has always been quite reliable for me, but Pomoca comes a close second. The only thing that Ive ever had issues with on mine was that the glue eventually began to pill up and lose a little bit of its tackyness. They still work, but if its like, really cold or really snowy, they sometimes slide off a bit and I might need to stop and readhere them once on my way up.

They are light, they fold up pretty compact, and theyre just as good as the Black Diamond or G3 mohair-nylon mixture skins as far as how well they climb. Mine are the Clime Pro Sglide which is a 70% mohair skin.

I'm not particularly super hard on anything but I dont do any hyper-careful treatment to my skins... I try to remember to hang dry them after use, but its not always the case... I've used mine on at least 30 tours on my 97 waisted skis and they have managed most ascents quite adequately.

I've had G3 Alpinist, BD Glidelite (x2) and Pomoca Climb Pro S Glide 2.0. The latter are my favorite so far. G3 feels cheap and degrades quickly. BD Glidelite glides quite smoothly, but sacrifices a bit on the climb (that's the inherent tradeoff) and I feel the glue shits the bed after two seasons. I've reglued a few times on those but it seems once they start on their way out, it's hard to recover them. My wife has BD ascensions and has the same issue. My Pomocas have struck a good balance for my needs and the glue is much better in my opinion. Not nearly as thick so I find it is harder to contaminate and easier to clean.

I've got a pair of the newer contours but had a season ending injury last year, so I'm excited to try them out.

So there you go. Conflicting experiences to Sean, so probably not a huge help!

It's interesting that there really isn't a clear leader in the skin game right now. I'd agree with everything said above ^. If you're touring a lot or have some experience, there's no reason to get anything but a mohair mix.

G3 glue and plush is garbage, but they make the best tip and tail connectors. Their Escapist tips are a great choice for any other skin that you're putting on a more square tip shape.

BD's connectors suck, but their modern glue has held up best for me and I get more durability out of the Glidelites than other options. But they're heavy, don't fold down as well, and get pretty useless when soaked.

Pomoca makes a sweet skin, but I've had multiple pairs start shedding glue onto my bases after two seasons. This is with the climb pro and Free Pro 2.0, which is a sweet skin but you need to take care of them. These do better on wet days, but if you put the glue on a remotely wet ski base, they're angry.

Honestly, owning skins in the back half of their useable life is really annoying for the number of days I get to be out. It's better to sell them cheap or give them away and get something new that sucks less on a regular basis.

I appreciate the input from all you! I'm hoping the free pro 2.0's will blend some of the best characteristics of each brand and prove to be a solid setup this winter.

Yeah, honestly I have used most things under the sun, and everything has its pros and cons... so just go with whatever you can go with and get out there.

For my BD skins, I would buy the G3 twin tip connectors and put that on the tail to hold onto the tail better. A cheap hack that makes it a lot better The Pomoca tail connector is different so that's only worked for BD for me. Haven't looked at the tail strap for the Contour skins yet.

I have tried a lot of brands in all kinds of tortuous conditions. G3, BD, Pomoca, BCA seem to all get the job done. All have their flaws as well. Pomoca seems like a solid choice and I might get a pair as well for my powder rig. I have really disliked their glue/tail clips in the past but maybe they are better now. I guess it all depends on what ski in the quiver I am using. I did a season on the BCA magic carpet on my main touring rig which is like 100 underfoot and was really impressed with their grip and glue in all weather/snow conditions. Such a good skin for big steep approaches in the spring. Felt like I never had to even bust out the ski crampons! Not particulary light nor does it glide fantastic but it has been super reliable.

I had some climb pro s-glides and the glue started peeling off the skin like boogers. The failing glue never sticked to the ski but it did make me switch brands. Other than the glue problem they were amazing skins. Super lightweight and no glopping when the new snow got wet. I had a friend whose front clip broke but I never had issues with durability. Only put one season on them.
