POLO: The Next Big Fad in Skiing

Yeah, you're probably right...I do sometimes get carried away. And, you're also right in that in some respects I can be arrogant and/or abrasive. I'm just a person, far from perfect, and I make mistakes. Regardless, I think I'm a positive contributor and that the good outweighs the bad.
I sort of roll my eyes at the whole "internet isn't real/doesn't matter" point. No, NS doesn't "matter", but I enjoy being connected and engaged with skiers and skiing, and I try and behave here like I do in real life. Is that the "right way"? I dunno, but it's my way...it's also my way to call bs when I see it, and I'm a blunt, honest person—be it on the comp, or in person.
So, I don't know...gotta take the good with the bad, right?

That is why you connect and engage with the people worth meeting. Every single person I have met from NS has been awesome and most of my really good friends are pretty regular posters on NS.

Polo by Ralph Lauren..

And I was joking when I made this thread (which is now 4 pages hahah), but I think Polo has serious potential to enter the freeskiing market. If you haven't noticed its already getting extremely popular amongst college kids. Plus even black people are starting to wear it, which means, according to previous trends, it will soon become a fad in freeskiing. Check out this rap song...(admit it its catchy)...(possibility for use in an edit???)...

Well then the research u did sucks becuse theres always been a trend on the way people dress for skiing.....................

i hate to take this thread seriously but dude where have you been? Polo has been, and will continue to be, super popular in most all circles. this is like when kids say "boy, frogskins (wayfarer shape sunglasses) sure are getting popular"

From Wikipedia....on the recent popularity of Wayfarers...

Wayfarers were brought back into fashion in the late 2000s when celebrities including Chloë Sevigny and Mary-Kate Olsen began wearing vintage frames.[20][21] Ray-Ban designers soon noticed that vintage Wayfarers were commanding high prices on eBay,[19] and the 2007 re-introduction of the original Wayfarer (RB2140) design aimed to respond to the demand.[13][19][22] (As of 2007, Wayfarers were available in Original Wayfarer, New Wayfarer, and Wayfarer Folding styles.[23]) Ray-Ban's marketing strategy was threefold: a return to the sunglasses' original, rebellious design, an "edgy" advertising campaign and "high-profile PR events", and the use of new media like MySpace to connect with consumers.[24] Sales in 2007 were 231% greater than in 2006 at Selfridge's London;[8] as of October 2007, the Wayfarer was the Luxottica Group's third-best-selling style.[25] As of July 2008, sales had increased 40% over 2007.[8]

As of 2008, the Wayfarer model is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

And here we have a little bit on the Rugby line, launched in 2004 that targets 16-25 year olds....

Rugby Ralph Lauren is an American clothing brand launched in 2004 under the management of parent company Polo Ralph Lauren. The brand specializes in Preppy/Rugby inspired lifestyle apparel for male and female clientele ages 16 through 25.

what's your point? having surges of popularity doesnt negate the fact that they've consistently been a classic, mainstream staple for years and years. i mean, we call all collared shirts "polos" colloquially and every cheap pair of sunglasses ever made has been a wayfarer shape knockoff. theyre just mega popular and standard things, they didn't just suddenly become a "fad"

anyway, stupid argument. no idea why i even posted here

If you want quality content, generate it yourself. It's ridiculous to assume that the lowest common denominator should set the tone for what we want to put into our community. If NSers don't recognize that valuable, thoughtful dialogue is worth working towards, it's their own loss. And yes, that position does sound elitist, but so does "pretty fucking stupid." I'd rather acknowledge that some members have better things to say and assume that those who care will appreciate the extra work of doing this right.

Casual is a great member here. He's not beholden to other interests, can write well, and knows his shit. We need many more like him.

"A fad, sometimes called a trend, meme or a craze, is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period"

-Wikipedia

Sounds a lot like Wayfarers and Ralph Lauren brand clothing, which, as you said, are currently going through a "surge in popularity."

....dude you know that when people call something a fad theyre usually referring to something that is popular for a period less than 20 years, not to mention i didnt say they were going through a surge of popularity, you and wikipedia did. stop quoting wikipedia, it's not changing anything, wayfarers and polos are hugely popular and the idea of them "becoming trendy" is laughable. worst argument ever.

wearing your helmet like that makes you look like a Down Syndrome kid would while learning to ride a bike with his helmet too loose

the first thing you do is ....only 450 or 630 on or off of large features

safety grab, tail grab, skis wide knees bent hands low

,You do not hop off a stupid down rail and huck a sloppy ass spin off a rail with your legs straight like we all must agree is happening to much.

why do people huck ridiculous spins off down rails two feet off the ground, its disturbing.

Your saying its the worst argument ever because you can't admit your wrong. Your not even arguing with me anymore...your arguing with wikipedia....

you think that wayfarers and polos have always been hugely popular

and wikipedia says that they're going through a surge in popularity

i'm saying it's the worst argument ever because it is

yeah, i am arguing with you, who is misusing wikipedia

wayfarers and polos have been hugely popular.. just because they have been going through a surge recently does not mean they havent always been hugely popular... the two aren't mutually exclusive.. like i said we colloquially call all collared shirts "polos" and wayfarers are like, the standard, go-to sunglass shape. you're crazy or just have been living in a cave (or are really young but i dont think you are) if you think that polos and wayfarers being popular is a new phenomenon. okay end of argument, if you still don't agree, guess what we're doing.. AGREEING TO DISAGREE FUCK YEAH

so I just read through this thread, and Quailman, though I like your name & your foresight, you need to get one thing straight - Ralph Lauren has been a clothing staple for everyone for years & years. The brand blowing up around you is in no way a fad, that's just your peer group waking the fuck up.

and as to what you perceived as its new-found 'urban' popularity - listen to any rap album from any point in the genre's history and you'll hear at least one Polo reference. Everyone likes Ralph Lauren shit, and everyone's always going to. (if you don't like it now you will in the future, so save typing to tell me that you don't)

they also already make tall-t's & hoodies:

I've never seen him ski, but Tucker Perkins is now my favorite skier, based solely on who sponsors him.

part of freestyle skiing is to look as good as possible. not in terms of outerwear completely, but when you do tricks in general. our sport is one where style and what you wear actually DOES matter and makes a significant impact on how we perceive others skiing.

with doubles up and on the rise, leading to even TRIPLE flips (just thinking about that shit is crazy), people often post on this site that "skiing needs to move more towards style!" i'm not saying it's everyone, so don't bitch at me if you don't. however, there certainly are people that say this. i agree with that statement because well frankly, looking at double cork 12's all day long in the x games gets pretty fucking boring. so, skiers today are encouraged to go out and be stylish with their skiing, be different, be unique. there is no better way to do this (other than your actual skiing) than to change your clothes. LITERALLY change your appearance.

so, I would say caring about outerwear is at least a little important. i will agree with the other side of this argument that people will get carried away, and "care too much." but hey, live and let live. yeah the PRIMARY focus should be skiing, but if you want to stand out and have a different style, then clothes would be one of your first places to look to, obviously behind your actual skiing.
