personally i think it makes a skier look like a beginner poles are part of the sport the same as a hocky stick to a hockey plays use them!

I just can't ski without poles, it just feels all wrong and awkward for me, it reminds me of when I was a little kid learning to ski and the instructor would make me stick my arms out like I was 'hugging a huge teddy bear'.

Who hasn't skied without their poles? Seriously, we used to do that shit all time. Not sure if it helped a whole lot. After skiing with poles for so long it feels odd to not do it.

I learned to ski with no poles and then when I was 7 I got poles and have used em ever since

I've literally had poles since day one.

back in nam' when i was in grade 6, i went skiing for my first time, twas a sunny spring day, and the ski instructor was like 'return your poles to the rental shop, you dont need them' then im like 'no way that'd look dumb skiing with no poles'

I think many of you that say that it looks dumb have not seen someone with true style skiing w/out poles. The shots of Andy Mahre on this website were good but not as steezy as in person. I think many of you just start thinking of snowbladers and feel that skiings going to start looking like that.

I only ride without poles when I'm going huge. That's because I'm usually throwing them one way while my worthless carcass is going another. Also the main reason I never use my pole straps, too.

Kinda gonna break away from this main topic (i've learned so much :-/) what kind of poles should i get? I have cheap alum scotts now and i've bentem around trees (90* angles) and sat on em a few times and bentem back again but they're lookin pretty twisted at the moment and it's only a matter of time b4 they snap. The K2's any good? how bout those cheap carbon ones on ebay all the time?

 
im in the same position, carbon/graphite are really light and comfortable but i heard they are brittle, i think good grade aluminum poles are the best bet

I skied without poles for a while out in europe this fall. I think it's better in the pipe, rails and jumps. It deffinatly helps your skiing. you learn to control your arms really well with no poles. your body positioning will change if you ski with out poles for a while, and when you go back to poles your skiing will improve.

pollard did it without poles in the up and coming of skiing, he said he did it because he wanted to grab, and he was forced to use some at a comp and didnt mind them, and never stopped skiing with them
