Plexi Glass

Im can get some plexi glass from the ice rink for free but i wanted to know how well this would work. I am assuming it wont crack to easily because the stuff they use for the windows on the rink is pretty damn thick. I can get some puck board but not as much as i need. any suggestions??

i have already built the box its 2'x16' what type u guys suggest or are there any other places that use this kinda stuff where they would have left overs for free??

k i just got the plexi glass 1'x12' and its 1/2 an inch thick i highly doubt that a 1/2" of plexi glass is going to crack but correct me if im wrong isnt that even thicker than lexan??

lexan comes in many thicknesses, up to several inches. the problem with plexi isnt the thickness, nessecarily, but that its so ridgid its brittle. if properly supported i see no issues, provided you dont like disasters.

haha havnt tried any disasters yet but this box is fucking bomb proof once i have everything finished on it i will post some pics but what would you suggest for mounting the plexi i heard that counter sinking would crack it but im sure and i suppose coping is a must on this could someone explain that for me?

ok. coping can be easy or hard. you can recess the metal L coping into the plexy, but that involves cutting the width and height of the coping out of the edge, so the whole thing is almost flat, with the metal a bit higher. In order to make sure that the initial force of slamming your skis into your box is absorbed through the metal. in this example, the screws go through the metal, which is countersunk, AND through the plexy, anchoring the whole thing together. PIC: plexy is red, and coping is black.

screws would also go horizontally through the side of the coping, to keep it more stable.

The other option is to cut your plexy a bit short on both sides, and using a pipe of that diameter, use that for coping. the sides would have to be lower, so the pipe is almost level, and you could fasten it however you wanted. my personal favorite is welding a flat piece onto half of the pipe, so it makes a semi circle, drilling holes, threading them, and then usuing screws of the same thread to anchor it from the bottom, so there are no holes. that requires welding skills, however, and a grinder to cut the pipe in half, plus a threading tool.

y not make it like this.

the coping would be the same thickness as the plexi glass. so that they are even hight, so u can spin around ontop without catchin the inner edge of the coping.

you want the coping slightly higher, because the whole point of coping is to take the force of landing off of the topsheet. im not talking like massive amounts higher, just a tiny bit, so it takes up most of the force. if done correctly you wont catch any edges.

i've used plexi glass before and what you do is you can counter sink but you just have to be careful just do it slowly

as for the coping you also want it because sliding the edge of the sheet will chip it. i used half inch diameter pvc piping and screwed it on the side of the plexi and it worked realllly well.

i didnt even need to use screws i just used super heavy duty glue and its super firm it aint goin anywhere. i also dont think that the sides will chip off it hasnt on mine yet
