Please help newb going to europe for first time

going to barcelona, madrid, montreux, chamonix, and paris. anyone want to give me some ideas of where to go. I have travel books but traveling accross the globe trusting a book is wierd to me. Any good suggestions? Also is it worth skiing so early in the season? Like is a whole mountain open? or just bits and pieces?
