does anyone else think plastic surgery for the sake of 'self improvement' is wrong? I am all for pro choice and all that, but not in this case. I don't see anything wrong with corrective surgery to try a fix massive scaring from burns and such, but to alter your image just for the sake of 'feeling better about myself' and that bullshit is whack. there are other options to fix low self esteem other than going under the knife and changing what you are born with. nothing makes me sicker than watching those shows on tv and having me realize that people can be so weak and self absorbed. for instance, my ex-girlfriends best friend got a nose job a few years ago, beforehand there was no way i would say that anything was 'wrong' with her nose. afterwards i couldn't even tell the difference and i can be very critical of people's looks. it just doesn't make sense to me. i wish people were stronger and shit like this wasn't available.

yeah, that's what got me onto this whole thing just now...those two brothers just make me laugh. i forget who they were trying to look like, but they turned out nothing like that person and were still ugly on the outside and even more so on the inside for being so ignorant and lame at being human beings.

that show is sort of a mixed blessing. i think the intent of it is to show how sad this shit really is, but at the same time it does seem to glorify the whole cause.

Yah those guys were umm.........really weird. The were trying to look like Brad Pitt, but they still looked like dorky toolshed douches with hell big beaks. Freaked me out.

i feel that alot of these people's weakness comes from today's media focus on beauty and glamour. everbody's attention is focused on famous people's looks and attributes, and not enough on personality, personal identity, etc. i dont find it wrong to have people we look up to for certain things and certain aspects, but, like alpentalik said, when we alter the way we look to adhere to what society considers 'beauty' or 'handsome', i think it is a flaw in a person that has developed through the convoluted road that the media travels to everyday people in America.

plastic surgery is bullshit unless that person was injured/disfigured. Just for the sake of self-improvement? That's weak, love yourself for who you are. if you're not happy with a part of your anatomy, go to the gym, if it can't be fixed at the gym, you're fuct. I can't fathom not liking my face,nor could I understand anyone who downright disliked themself. That 'Swan' show made me sick, if people could only accept themselves, the world would be a better place.

Whilst i agree that some decisions for plastic surgery are wildly misguided, there are compelling arguments for plastic surgery.

In our persuit of happiness as human beings, we will see anoppertunities to change something for the intended better, and its in our nature to go for it. You could argue that going to the gym and lifting weights would change your body in a way that might not have occured naturally. Therefore is there much of difference in surgery?

'Yes' you say! because its not natural! But you are still changing your body for no other reason than asthetics!

If someone could gain some extra happiness from having surgery i would be hard pressed not to say yes.

The real issue comes from the insecurities deep down in our psyche. In my opinion these insecurities are ususally unfounded.

However they are caused by our appearance obsessed MTV culture. Where perfection is the only 'chic'. And beauty is aspired to and respected. HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU RESPECT BEAUTY!!!!! That is the biggest problem with our culture. How can you respect something you have not earned? A switch 720 mute over the big kicker at mammouth is something to be respected and revered!! Not someone who was born attractive. (allthough youll propbaly want to look at both :) )

Anyway, ive ranted a bit there and maybe gone off track.

My feelings on the subject are that some people might benifit from it weather it be for there own personall satifaction or a genrall improvement in apperance. Most others dont need it, and are like a dog chasing its tail. They will never be satisfied and instead of surgery they need councelling.

That show on MTV, I Want A Famous Face or whatever, is the worst show on TV. Actually, the show on E! called Dr. 90210 is worse. They follow around some plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills. Pretty damn stupid. Anyways...

Extreme makeover and all them shitty shows are horrible. I absolutely HATE it when people just go get a nose job or lip injection because they don't like one little thing.

I'm all for it if you need like gastric bypass to live, reconstructive surgery, but anything else is disgusting.

Yeah theres a big difference from trying to improve yourself by running and lifting weights streching over a long period of time, thats self improvement (phsyically) just waking up one day dropping 5 grand and being fixed the next day isnt really self improvement. You gotta work for it or its meaningless and empty.
