Planning to spend May skiing mammoth.

So long story short I wanna drive out to mammoth to ski and stay for as long as possible. I've heard talk that you can camp right down the road. I just wanted to hear legit info about doing that and if anyone else is planning to do the same or similar thing. Anybody got a room or couch for rent as well?

I've been thinking about heading down there for a weekend or two too. Do you know when their closing day is?

i would say the beset option is to post up a tent by the hot springs which are like 15-20 minutes away.

Hot springs are a good choice for camping, but theyre kind of far, I have camped just off of the mammoth scenic loop, on dry creek road spur, and it is super close. you wont get hassled by old drunk naked guys like you might at the springs and its a little more sheltered from wind and onlookers

We're likely going to be hurting come Memorial day, don't expect the mountain to stay open longer.

As far as rent goes. A lot of people are trying to fill rooms for a month or so since people are starting to leave, check the forums on mammothmountain.com or mammothtimes.com classifieds.

In regards to camping, you can camp on BLM land for free for pretty much as long as you want. The nearest is about an 8 mile drive from town. I don't believe the Scenic Loop is BLM land, so if you did that, you could face a pretty hefty fine from the forrest service should they catch you camping at a non registered camp site. (I could be wrong about the BLM thing, but I'm pretty certain it's not).

The park is still alright at the moment, but by 1 it's pretty slushy. The upper mountain stays pretty nice though.

Then of course... it's now fishing season and the owens is lovely. So much to do this time of the year. Friday I was skiing, Saturday I was day drinking and partying on the sundeck in shorts watching the Grenade Games, yesterday I floated the owens river with around 30 people, tomorrow I'll be skiing. We don't have a mud season like a lot of other places.

If I was to drive out to Mammouth the week of the 20th would the park still be open? Would there be jumps? If not does any one know of any place closer to Colorado that has jumps open in late May?

A Basin is expected to close June 2nd at the moment.... No idea what it will look like by that point. They stay open till it returns to the ribbon of death.

Mammoth... well, we are expecting thunderstorms this weekend. It's been in the 60's every day. I really have no idea what we will look like after the weekend. It's been an absurdly warm spring. We are going to be hurting by the end of may. There is still a ton of snow up top... but where the park is, the patches of dirt are growing daily.

Your best bet is summer camp.

I've heard plans to have MTB jumps next to snow jumps on Memorial Day weekend, but I'd be pretty surprised if there's enough snow at the bottom by then. The triple pack jumps were pretty hard to clear by 2pm the last few days, and it's only getting warmer.
