A federal aviation official says an Asiana Airlines flight has crashed while landing at San Francisco airport. It was not immediately known whether there were any injuries.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Lynn Lunsford says the Boeing 777 crashed at San Francisco Airport while landing on Saturday.

Asiana Flight 214 was arriving from Seoul.

Photos and video of the aircraft show fire and smoke from the aircraft.

Early reports indicate the tail came apart from the plane and the resulting fire sent black smoke billowing into the air, visible for miles.

CBS Station KPIX reports witnesses heard a loud bang, and saw a huge cloud of smoke.

Rescue vehicles were on the scene immediately afterwards.

The airport has been closed -- no flights were being allowed in or out of SFO at this time.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dFtmSybpuw&feature=player_embedded

Boeing has been having major problems with their jets as of recently. Its only a matter of time before they are investigated using non-certified bolts and parts on the plane.

Tail is broken off.

I'm my predominantly uneducated opinion, it landed hard and probably ruptured the rear bulkhead and snapped the tail.

Hopefully no one was killed. I think the fire was probably the most dangerous part

The 777 has been operated by many airlines since 1994...

Whether it be Airbus or Boeing the VAST majority of any incident is due to operating errors OR mechanical errors that could have been prevented with proper maintenance and pre-flight operations.

True, but on a more serious note, Asiana has one of the highest pilot turnover rates of all airlines in the world. It's due to the cockpit culture that is very crude and authoritarian which isn't exactly the best environment for an aircraft cockpit.

for a predominately uneducated opinion thats pretty fucking specific and i dont even know what you said means so youve gotta be kinda educated about the subject

Because it's the cheapest and fastest form of traveling large distances? Not every plane goes down in flames. It's most definately worth the risk.

airplane is apparently the safest way to travel but I think that's bullshit.when was the last time you heard of a tragic passenger train crash
