Pick my next car

Looking at subaru outback, I'm tossing up between an older model (2005) with the 3.0R engine and around 70,000 kms on it. vs a newer model (2012) with the 2.5l engine and around 100,000 kms on it, also for a slightly higher price. Anyone got any advice?

The 05 outbacks are pretty reliable I've heard, you might want to go with that and save some money for repairs if it needs any

I had a ‘01 and the head gasket blew which is a really common problem with that era of subi. Not sure if they fixed that but I would say newer the better I would say.

The older Subaru but only if it’s a standard I’ve got an 01 legacy and it’s been pretty solid. But the standards, and 4 cylinder engines have way less issues than bigger engines and automatics. Or just get a Tacoma.

Go Forester because they are made in Japan. Better quality and fewer problems. I have 190,000+ on my 2003 and no problems. 5 speed manual.

Forget the 3.0 sixes. Too many problems.

Old subies are sick the only issue it they usually decide to implode around the 150k-170k mi/ 240k-270k km when the head gaskets go (they will). This is a pretty expensive fix unless your doing it yourself because there typically hard to get at. The older models also have timing belts not chains. which is a bit annoying to replace. If your looking at a 2012 I would also look at the 2013s because the timing chain becomes standard. There are still issues with head gasket after the 2011 remodel but not as bad a the earlier models. However I had a 2013 and the transmission went for absolutely no reason I'm not sure how common this is but definitely look into it. Just know what your getting into subies are sick and I will always love them but I also have 250k mi on my 2005 crv and never had any major work done. If your looking for a reliable car to last you forever get a honda or a toyota.
