Shouldn't the cops be able to do that for you?

Cops are pretty useless sometimes! You would think they do this all day with traffic lights/tickets but apparently not...

There is a traffic camera that was pointing right at their front license plate. Tell your mom to physically go to the police department and request the tapes be pulled.

Thanks for trying sour steezle

The cops said they can't file a claim because they don't have the plate number? and they can't try to find the plate number because they don't have a claim?!

Just file a claim with any number, than use the claim to request the tapes, get actual license plate number, retract claim, file new claim with the actual number

TV and movies have led me to believe that if you just yell "enhance" at the picture it will zoom in for you

Aka their just lazy sacks of shit which many of them are.

Somebody hit my car in highschool. Cop showed up, took forever to get there. Never got out of his car, sat in it idling about 20 feet away and said "It doesn't look that bad" there was a huge dent. Ended up costing 300 to fix and that was going through a friend on the cheap or it would have been over 500.

Oh yeah the kid who hit me disappeared as well. Hence calling the cops because without a police report I wasn't going to have much luck with insurance probably.

The cop was mad that I wasted his time by making him come out there.(Also a school, in the middle of the town, which they drive through all day every day)

And while he sat in his car not helping, he continued to smoke a cigar on school property.(No tobacco on school property)

Pretty sweet.

It's almost like any of them that simply do their job are going "above and beyond these days".

We keep adding more police, but they don't seem generally useful.

Thats my best guess

seems like the cops don't give two shits, so good luck to you!!!

Alright guys heres an UPDATE

I tried this license plate number through insurance (because they can check to see if its the right car) and this is sadly incorrect.

According to insurance, a california license plate should start with a number, have three letters, and then three numbers

Try making the 5 an S and the E an 8 or 3

I work in I.T. and my buddy actually teaches the digital forensics course here at school. I emailed him the picture, but I'm still waiting on a reply back. I will let ya know what he comes up with.

Thanks man greatly appreciate it!

bring it to police and give them the numbers that you definitely know and see if any match up with a white Mercedes

Ive tried all the plate numbers that people have posted (and a few variations) nothing matches up yet, but I still have hope!

In for interesting thread.

Also good luck to you, I'd definitely deal out some vigilante justice if someone hit my mom and then tried to dip.

A make, model, color, plate state and a few characters off the plate are enough for them to look it up. If they say no they are full of shit. Just make sure you're using the right agency. If it's a local municipality use the local PD, if it's a county patrolled area use Sheriff Office and if it's highway hit up those Eric Estrada lookin' ma fuckaz in the tailored crotch pants.

Get a dashcam as well, the youtube videos are sick.

Bullshit. The truck right behind them doesn't fit that pattern.

4th letter looks like a B to me

Well I tried. Honestly I don't think there is anything in photoshop/GIMP that will make you see this. I tried sharpening it and I tried edge detecting it but there is too much noise in the photo to tell. I'll try one more time but im not even gonna post if it I cant tell

Idk man this is killing me. I tried again and it might be a bit better. I gave it a guess and here's the comparison to a cali license plate

the last letter could also be a C if not E. I'm getting PGE515E(or C)

Too all you butt hurt people about past run ins with cops.. 1) if you are in non life threatening accident and there is more critical calls pending officers prioritize in which order to respond based on seriousness vs something unfortunate but that can wait a little bit. 2) we don't have magic crystal balls that give us all the answers 3) CSI stuff like cops using satellites to triangulate cars and find a license plate or is fake. Maybe if you're the NSA or FBI but not even large PD's can do this. 4) We are all only human and can't perform magic and miracles by seeing into the past or future.. if what evidence you provide us with is low quality, lacking information, or the statement you give us is crap.. then there's not much we can do with your case. Bad news sucks, but the evidence technology isn't as glamorous or high speed as you think.

As far as what should be the standard according to CA insurance you have to take into account the possibility the plate customized. Also states have different license plate classifications based on intended use/weight/etc. Not sure what how CA' plate system is set up though..? Just some food for thought while trying to figure it out.

Best of luck OP don't give up though. Once you have a solid plate they will be able to help. I had a semi truck hit my car in Vail Pass in 2007 and it completely obliterated the side of my car.. the semi took off down the interstate.. all I knew it was a Swift company truck because the plate was partially covered up by snow.. not a lot of useful information I could give police by the time I could get ahold of them. So trust me I get the frustration..

So pretty much, this is going nowhere fast. Cops are taking their time and the process is going to be awhile I have a feeling...

Following the pattern of letters and numbers insurance told you, I came up with a few things:

First of all, I'm not sold on the fact that the first number is a 7. I enlarged and sharpened the photo and it doesn't look like the other characters, which leads me to believe it's a distortion of some kind.

Here's the image I used (you can zoom in on your browser to see better):

1213nu9.jpg

I also googled CA license plates, and from the looks of it all non-custom plates on passenger vehicles follow the 1 number, 3 letters, 3 numbers pattern your insurance talked about.

So, assuming this person was in a vehicle like that, it could be something like:

?GEB89?

?GES89?

Sucks the person got away man, hope you can sort things out.

if they're not losing money from it they don't give a fuck.

I got hit at a crosswalk in the spring and the guy drove off. but I wasn't hurt so after I gave my statement I never heard back. in the city with the most cops per capita in north america.

So with my investigating, I think I've come up with something useful. I'm not having more luck with the numbers on the plates than anybody else in the thread, but it seems that the top portion of the plate doesn't match that of California's.

If you darken the image, or just look at it closely, you can see that the pixels focus to a position on the top left portion of the plate. California's "California" is centered, and so are the names of almost every license plate in the U.S. Washington's plate, however, has it's name located on the top left, and the plate also seems to resemble that of Washington's more than California's in my opinion.

Look into Washington plates, they have different regulations than those from California and some of the guesses from people could work with a plate from such.

Best of luck man, hope I can be of help
