Photokina 2012 - what are you excited about?

One big thread for all things

What I think are the biggest things:

- X-Pro 1 firmware update

- Sigma 35mm f/1.4

- Zeiss lenses for X-Pro1 and Nex

- GH3

These things may seem really small, but for me it signifies where we're heading. Smaller, mirrorless camera's are the future and this really signifies that. I would say it's a safe bet I won't be shooting a DSLR any more in 2 years. The X-Pro1 is already a VERY good camera and with the new firmware it's even more interesting. And the fact that Zeiss is going to make lenses for the Nex and XP-1 really means there is a future there.

Seeing how Photokina this years has quite a strong emphasis, I can't wait to see what it will look like in 2014.

Other fun stuffs:

Hasselblad Lunar

Leica M/M-E

Discuss, rumor and speculate!

i'll elaborate on this later after I do my homework. But it goes with the whole mirrorless is the future

gh3 easily takes the cake, Im blown away by this camera which was already teaching canon video a lesson last year.

Im dissapointed canon didnt release anything video related, but the 6d looks pretty solid

I think he mean reasonably priced with logical features for the price set. *Hint* this is not the cX00 series...

It looks interesting in terms of quality, but compared to the fs700 I dont see it as such a drastic upgrade from a 7D.

until I see the lowlight test, I can only speculate how good it will be, but from what it apears, this is where it will stand out. With only an 8 megapixel sensor, it should tear sony a new asshole when it comes to low light.

To me this seems like the only point of interest that would make me consider upgrading. yes theres a lot of other nice things but am I willing to pay 8000$ for those? no.

I think I am going to opt for the fs700 because its still a good improvement in low light but it offers features that make it much more interesting for me to upgrade. To me the slowmotion is great because it will allow me more creativity for videoclips, sports and short films, it will also allow me to start producing stock shots which I think is a smart way to pay off a little bit of my investment.

clean HDMI 4:2:2 out on the c100 with the canon log gammas made famous by the c300 is it's biggest/most popular trait. You get some of the c300 features in a package half the price.

ZOMG. Okay fuck gear and shit, but man ZEISS and I want a 35mm but I need af and metering, and Canon's offerings are either L or mediocre 10 year old lens.

Interested in seeing how the new GH3 shapes up....

and depending on price, very interested in the sigma 35mm f/1.4.

I'm mostly intrigued by the Fuji X system, but I'm not really buying into the mirrorless hype. Many make it out to be the next big thing, like LCD screens or SSD storage... but it just isn't.

Mirrorless just shaves 1-2 centimeters off of the flange distance of a camera. It's just a slightly different shape to the camera box. Any lens over 40mm will cancel out those 1-2 cm that were gained. The shape of the camera box really doesn't matter that much: it is the combination of sensor and lens that make up the total size. In fact, I think once the day comes that electronic viewfinders are better than optical, and mirrorless focussing is better than mirrored, Nikon and Canon will just stick with their existing mounts and camera sizes after throwing out the mirror box.

Especially the NEX and EOS M are the most stupefying to me. They combine the bulk of DSLR lenses with the ergonomics of compact cameras. Why?

At least m43 offers a range of very small lenses, so it makes sense as a miniature system.

Lenses make or break a camera system. At least Fuji understood that. They are offering a retro styled alternative to Canon and Nikon DSLRs. Sure, with a lens attached the bulk is the same, but Fuji is squeezing in slightly brighter and sharper APS-C lenses, something almost no one else has been doing.

Canon and Nikon have been neglecting their APS-C lenses because they don't want it to cannibalize the more expensive full frame. Heck, Canon doesn't even offer L lenses designed for APS-C. And yet it seems many APS-C and m43 cameras are getting a lot of momentum. With Fuji knocking on the door like this they might shoot into action...

Leica's always give me massive raging boners.

Still can't justify spending that much on a camera, not even for the M-E (E for economy?)
