My class got a new portrait studio with new Profoto D1 lights
two umbrellas and a soft box.around 2-3 thousand Canadian
Also comes with an Air Remote, which triggers the lights, and have full control up to 300 m (900+ ft)
Its amazing, I love using em! but pricy as hell

My school's photo department has some AB 400's and maybe an AB 800 (not sure), and some sb-800s. The photo dept. also has a few of the Paul C. Buff wireless triggers.
I personally own an sb-26 from way back when, and the photosensitive built in slave works well enough for most of my work. It's a pain in the ass to rely on, but it gets the job done most of the time.

you wanna shoot skiing....
buy 2 or 3 trash give away tripods. (light stands are only good on flat surfaces and are normally not as sturdy as tripods)
get your 2 or 3 speedlights (light, easy to use, cheap. PWNS ALL!!!)get some wireless triggers (PWs are great, spend ur money, you save it on the tripods)
if you want get some elbows and light modifiers as a 2nd step. (get elbows with or without the tripod depending on how you can mount the speedlights)
Batteries are KEY!
Make sure you have a nice large bag to carry everything comfortably... trust me, after a day of shooting all you want to do is grab your gear and throw ur shots on a computer. you wont rly stay and pack up all your stuff nice and neat like you did the night before or morning of. i dont have a car so i walk with ALL my gear, and after a while you WILL want to spend that extra coin on a good bag to easly carry it.
