PHOTOGRAPHERS. Why do you have the camera you have?

Title sums it up. I have a shitty Rebel but it is all I could afford. I love the versatility of the SLR platform. Despite it's shittyness, you can do a lot with it. How about y'all?

Man it's all about the glass, I got a 7D cause thats the best camera I could afford at the time, then started saving for some sweet lenses.

Yeah. My lenses are all like 4 times as expensive as the body... I have a 55-250 ef. Wide angle sigma, and the stock lens, which is good for macro. Also A speedlite somthing... the fancy one.

I hook the roll of film in my braces and then smile when I want to take a picture. It gives me that retro quality that I'm looking for.

This thread would proabably do better in the Media and Arts section. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should go check it out. You would probably like it.

I have a Nikon d90 and it was a gift (I know, I 'm super fortunate). It's been great for me. I don't see any need to upgrade. It does what I want to do with Photography. Though, I'm sure in four of five years I will be looking for a new body.

I was in the thread when It moved. I clicked on a thread in nsg, posted and was in media and arts.

I seriously think I just telleported.

I use a Canon 5D Mark 3. I used a 5D2 for a while, and then upgraded when it crapped out. I loved the mk2, full frame is awesome, but went with the mk3 for the upgraded autofocus, framerate, and the digic 5+ processor which KILLS it in lowlight. I do not regret the switch at all, it's honestly the best camera I've ever used and it produces great images and has unbelievable features.

i have the camera i have because it's one of the few tools that can actually get the job done for what i do!

It does. Bigger the sensor, shallower the DoF. Why do you think iPhone pics are shot at f/2.8 (or something) but everything is in focus? Tiny sensor.

Anyway, I shoot with a 5Dc, great camera and cheap. I might be upgrading to the 5D mkII in the near future, but that'd be purely for low-light (and the video'll come in handy I guess).

I have a t2i because its the cheapest of the canon dslrs and was the only one I could afford. Would have gotten a gh2 had I known about it at the time though

-Leica M6 because I love composing with it's big bright viewfinder and it's small size makes it super portable

-mamiya rz67 because the handeling from start to finish of the shot just seems to click with me, cheap lenses on keh these days, 6x7cm negative, rotating back, etc. Oh and it's built like a tank

rolleiflex 3.5e because it was my great grandpa's who passed it down to my grandpa who gave it to me. It's a rolleiflex, come on, what's not to love?!

5d because it hasn't sold yet lolol

FILM

Hasselblad 500c/m - Medium format is awesome, and Hasselblad makes such a great camera system. This was my uncle's, and I'm very fortunate to have it. Thing is so fun to shoot on, the lenses are stupid sharp, and I can't wait to get back out with this.

Minolta SRT201 - I have two of these because they're affordable and really awesome to take around. Completely manual, very well constructed, and tons of glass offerings. I'd say probably the most affordable and easy way to get into shooting film. I bought one of them for like 7 bucks, and the lenses are all ranging around 20ish.

Canon T50 - My dads AT1 broke, and I needed a camera that could take FD lenses. Completely automatic in every way. You cant set your exposure, it's just full-time program mode and that's it. Has an autowinder, but you have to manually rewind- which is nice since I know some old autorewinders used to crack film sometimes. Still kinda fun to just take out and shoot. I got it for 3 bucks, as well so hell yeah.

Canon EOS 50/Elan IIe. I bought this for 20 bucks and it had a pretty nice lens on it, so it was a must. Plus, I could use all my lenses from my DSLRs on it, so it was a pretty good snag. Basically a DSLR without the digital. Modern in every way. I bought a grip for it too, so I can use AA batteries. Really nice to take out along with a digital camera since you can switch out lenses on both.

Minolta Hi-Matic 7sII - I wanted a rangefinder, and this was one of the more affordable ways to go about it, since I'm not Thomas and therefore not made of money, so I cant just up and buy a freaking Leica M ;). 40mm fixed lens. f1/7. Extremely sharp. Really accurate meter. Compact, easy to take around. Full manual and auto exposure options. My only compliant is it's not the black one.

Chinon CM3. Fully manual camera that's super plasticy, but that I got for 10 bucks at goodwill with a couple of PK mount lenses. The meter is hard to read since it's LED rather than needlematch like my Minoltas, so I don't really take it out all that much. I use the lenses on my digital stuff.

Pentax Spotmatic. I have 2 of these from my uncle who gave me the Hassy. I rarely ever take these out because I only have 2 lenses for them and they aren't really the best. If I had better glass I would, because they are awesome cameras.

DIGITAL

Canon 60D. Pretty awesome camera. Very similar to the t3i in most ways, but it has faster, more accurate AF, and it has the top window for reading exposure settings which I really really like. Takes solid video, and is just overall nice to take out and shoot with. I mostly use it for video.

Canon 10D. I got this thing for real affordable to have a beater dslr to take around when I wanted to leave my 60D at home and just take photos, or leave on a timelapse or toss in a backpack to take into the backcountry or something. I also had a bunch of CF cards, and couldnt use them on my 60D, so why not. Pretty basic in every way, but still very much an awesome camera that takes great photos. Probably one of the best cameras for someone looking at getting into digital photography.

Canon Powershot SX10? Ex girlfriend gave it to me a while back since she never used it. It's like a want-to-be DSLR. I never use it but I keep it sitting around in case I'd actually need it for some strange reason.

First bought a Canon 500D because it fit my budget, then upgraded soon after (horrible choice and waste of money) to a Canon 600D, because I wanted something better. Now I'm saving up for a 6D, no more crop sensors for me.

Bronica SQ-B.

Fits my style of shooting to perfection, slow paced careful composition. Right now I'm exclusively making c-prints in a colour darkroom and i love my 6x6 negatives for that. Been making 20x20 prints and jeez theyre fucking beautiful - don't want to ever use anything else (unless its 4x5)

Mamiya RZ67: Affordable, awesome build quality, awesome glass quality, huge negatives, easy to use, and it feels like a CAMERA, not some piece of shit plastic.
Nikon F5: Can't even describe how amazing this camera is
GoPro 3: Just bought a GoPro for some car-mount stuff. Can't use it for serious photography for obvious reasons, but it's a camera haha.

Actually sensor size has nothing to do with DOF. The reason that an iphone everything is in focus is not because of the sensor, it's because the focal length of the lens is like 3mm. The only three things that effect dof are focal length, distance from your subject, and aperture. When you have a camera with a tiny sensor you need to use an ultra wide angle lens to compensate for the huge crop.

If you are using a 5d vs a canon 1.6 crop and you shoot the same lens, at the same focal length and the same aperture and subject there will be the exact same DOF the only difference is the 1.6 image FOV will be different due to the small sensor.

If you wanted to have the same FOV then you would need to change either your distance from your subject or your focal length, therefor changing your DOF.

Wrong. The iPhone has a tiny sensor which is why when it uses a 3mm(or whatever) lens, the crop makes it ~28mm 35mm equiv

As sensor size increases, the depth of field will decrease for a given aperture (when filling the frame with a subject of the same size and distance). This is because larger sensors require one to get closer to their subject, or to use a longer focal length in order to fill the frame with that subject. This means that one has to use progressively smaller aperture sizes in order to maintain the same depth of field on larger sensors.

5D mk III, Despite a few drawbacks from the upgrade from the 7D (Sync speed, fps, hypersync issues still on the mk III) the 5D mk III is the best camera I have ever used, that being said I have not got my hands on the 1DX yet.

I got a T3i for videography and have been actually using it 50/50 for photography too. I love it for both.

t2i

it's done me well, but I am so ready to move on.

only a couple hundred dollars short of upgrading to a 5d3!

You shot that huge sequence(might have been Vincent) on a t2i? Take it you were shooting jpeg?

nikon d3100 becuase i feel nikkor lens are much more crisp and give a better realistic quality to the shots

Bronica SQ-A because medium format is amazing, I love the square format, and the camera is a bare-bones work horse. I also like to take my time and compose landscapes, which this system nicely accomodates.

Nikon FE because I can't always carry the weight of all my video gear + medium format. It has longer reach, being a smaller format and all. It is also indestructible; a simple workhorse that does everything I need and nothing I don't.

I use both of these because, financially speaking, I can shoot film for years before I match the price of one mediocre digital camera system. That aside, film still puts digital to shame (come at me bro).

Canon 7D for tele, high fps, quick AF, quick&easy optical triggering of OCFs, and main camera until I get...

Canon 6D for wide, low-light performance, lightweight for travel, and other full-frame goodness.

Nearly all my lenses are full-frame compatible, so having an APS-C and 35mm will give me some extra flexibility with effective focal lengths.

Nikon D300 because it was a hand me down from my dad and an upgrade compared to my old D200. i'd like to have a 5dmk2 or 3 in the future but for the time being the nikon is an end to a means and produces quality photos.

Canon 70-200 4L IS

Canon 15mm Fisheye

Sigma 50

Canon 16-35 2.8L

about in that order. The top three get used lots, I dont use my wide angle much for photos. But filming I use it primarily

Yeah I have seen that maybe I will just reinstall the firmware and play with it again to get the settings right. It is so frustrating only getting 1/200th shutter with no banding.

Because I'm such a hipster I shun at everything digital apart from my beloved iPhone.

Rollei XF 35:
Tiny, silent, deadly and really tiny for a 35mm RF.

Zenit 11: Cost me 11 bucks, dependable selenium meter, build to double as Sovjet hammer.

Polaroid SX 70: Dem looks, dem looks, dem looks!

Polaroid ImagePro: SX 70's rugged brother.

Nikon F: best SLR ever created.

And some other random camera's that see no use apart from catching dust on my shelves.

5D mk II, because I got it from a friend for $500, in perfect working condition, and Olympus OM-2 because it was my dad's and I wanna start shooting film.
