Photo dorks, help

so i've always wanted some decent ski pics. this year i'd really like to get at least one good one, that was high quality enough to blow up and frame (so some day when i'm old and my knees don't work, i still have a good photo for the wall).

how much do you have to spend to get a camera decent enough to take a non-blurry, quality picture?

i do not want to take up photography as a hobby, it's cool, but I don't have the time. i'm not looking for some ridiculous 1000$ SLR camera - so what's the minimum i'd have to spend to get reasonable quality pics without being an expert?

 
i've always wondered....... if you want a good still photo of someone say, in mid trick in the air, is it best to follow them with the cam then snap the shot whenever, or to hold the cam in a fixed position and wait for the skier to get into site then snap it?

You can get a great quality picture with like a 5MP digital point-and-shoot camera, I'm not sure the price ranges because they change so much. Just shoot it during a sunny day. Or you could pay someone with an SLR like $20 and they'll probably snap some shots of you.

As far as the other guy, I prefer to keep the camera in position to frame the shot well and wait for the skier to get where you want him. If you shoot a sequence it really doesn't matter too much, but it depends on what you want the outcome to look like really.

 
Like the guy above me said a 5 Megapixel camera would be good and there is a big range of them with different zooms. A good choice would be a Canon Powershot a95.

yeah. i was gunna say a canon powershot.

but if you do get that sweet picture...

dont do alot of editing.

just a little work with the levels and MAYBE the brightness and contrast.

sharpen it a little and then find a good local printer.

i would say just get an older manual SLR with a nice lens. throw some slide film in there and you are going to get a MUCH beter quality picture than any cheap (under $1000) digicam. you will also to blow it up as big as you want without it looking shitty. making a 2x3 foot print off a 5mp consumer digicam isnt goona look good

what mammothpunks says except, I don't know about the slide film, unless you practice a bit with a 35mm just because slide film can be a bit touchy with its exposures and stuff. It wil give you the best shot though, anything film will be better then a digital.

thats not true, 35mm color film can look pretty bad on snow. maybe better than a digi p&s most of the time, but i would rather shoot on a DSLR than 35mm film. slide film is a different story though.

ill be super rich and own mt.hood and let everybody from ns ski for free... except freezed

i only payed $170.00 for my cannon rebel. and its a sick cam

i don't care as long as the bassline is pumpin / the drumline bangin away / make one move and i'll blow you away / one false move and i'll blow you away
