Petition to Stop the IOC / FIS Decision to Combine Judges For Olympic Skiing and Snowboarding

I still feel like this isn't that big of a deal. It may even be better to have gymnastics judges/some other sport. Then the judges come in with no biases, get trained, with each trick having a points range, and each feature having a percentage of the total score...

I kind of see what your saying, but gymnastic judges would end up judging it like gymnastic, where everything should look the same, no individual style. No matter what the comp will still be spin to win.

I wouldnt really say that it is good for the sport, but it is good for the riders that compete. The olympics dont really affect you, so just keep doing what you are doing.

Thread won't get sticky'd. The mods are waiting for a person with more involvement with the issue to get involved with it. It really doesn't need to get sticky'd because it'll stay pretty high in ski gabber with everyone saying "signed" etc.

how is the olympics bad for our sport dude? they dont have FIS judges for Level 1 Superunknown do they??

Our sport isn't just Level 1 super unknown now is it? Our sport is everything having to do with the extreme side of skiing, it is bad for our sport because as you can already see with this new push for combining judges for both skiing and snowboarding they are undermining what free skiing is about for the worst. They are in it to make money off of skiing but are not helping the progression of it and instead degressing it with fucking retarded ideas like this. Pull your head out of your ass and realize that free skiing is not in desperate need of exposure through the olympics but in fact it is the other way around, Olympics is trying to capture a younger audience so free skiing and snowboarding is the perfect way to do that and keep generating money into their corporate fucking pockets. extreme sports don't need the most people they can to join to maintain, they need extreme fucking people.

Stop being such a fucking hipster. Yes, it is good for our sport. The more people that become interested in freeskiing, the better, because it pumps money into the industry. What are you so worried about? More gapers on the hill with the newest Tartarsauce McWigglenuggets gear? Who gives a shit? Skiing can still be as "core" as you want make it, so if you, or anyone else, do not feel the need or want to associate yourselves with the Olympics, and whatever "negativity" you believe it brings to our sport, then so be it. In the end, it's not going to affect 99% of skiers, and definitely will not change the sport of freeskiing in general. I'm not trying to personally attack you here, but I feel like all the haters need to take a step back and think about how freeskiing in the Olympics is going to personally affect the way they ski, and how they view the sport, because, well, it wont.

MONEY MONEY MONEY... Skateboarding is doing pretty fucking good right now without olympics and I know they would never allow something like the Olympics to disintegrate what their about. By the way I love how you call me a hipster for not giving into all this Olympic Love. I'm worried about our image as an action sport being turned around and making skiing look like another fucking team sport. True it doesn't make me ski any different, but it sure as hell causes a change in the mentality of freeskiings future, I've seen the difference it makes already first hand and its only going to get worse. Fuck FIS, Fucks Olympics, and Fuck all ya'll who are bending over and taking it.

im not sure I understand why this is a bad thing. For years, skiers have wanted to be as cool as snowboarders and do snowboard things.

Keep in mind, when combining the judges, not only will snowboarders be judging skiers, skiers will also be judging snowboarders.

to have all skiers judging skiers I feel would make more of a biased solution to the whole "judging problem". to add a few snowboard judges in (as long as they arent the ones that gave shaun white 100) it may just shake things up a bit and give someone else a chance to strut there stuff.

All in all,

NOT signed.

THIS CUNT KNOWS WHATS UP! Fuck the Olympics and all you comp fags that think skiing is should be about comparing yourself to others. Our fucking sport got wrecked by its past, with having moguls, racing and aerials lay the foundations for all the jock fags like Bobby brown and shit come represent the front line. What makes action sports special is that its not about fucking medals, teams, coaches, and training because we would be doing it anyway, regardless of rostered days on and off. Take a fucking look at skating, that shit is the most core sport in the world because there is no gay ass FIS government equivalent setting up pathways for young kids to think about nothing but being competitive.

Skiing should be about fucking sending and doing tricks in ways that can only be done on skis. Not just jockin on a tramp all day then repeating the sketchy shit on snow. It should be about exploring terrain and riding the hill like a skater rides the street. NO RULES, NO COMPS, NO PROGRAMS.

Fuck skiing and all you pussy private school faggots involved in this sport, Fucken over it. STOP TAKIN ORDERS CUNTS!

I really don't understand why people are getting so angry about this. Sure I don't like the decision and signed the petition. Honestly people saying fuck all these comps look at skateboarding, skateboardings in X games as well. Skiing is a sport going in so many different directions who cares if somebody wants to do something thats judge one way or another. Like AR6rider said its not going to change how you ski and yes it is going to bring money to the sport. More cool events, more opportunities for amatures to get sponsored. Its going to bring attention to the sport and get more people into it which is cool look how many extremely talented people are involved already. Imagine with even more kids getting into it the next generation of riders is going to be absolutely insane. If you don't like comps don't compete go freeski on your own mountain, shred the backcountry but hating just going to piss you off and stress you out. Get out there have fun thats what skiings about if competing isn't fun don't do it nobodys making you. Who cares what people opinions of skiing is skiing is fun and I could care less if people thought it was the gayest lamest thing next to figure skating I'd still do it.

It might not change how YOU ski... but it will change how those who come after you ski... 100% without a doubt.

There are people who say "who cares, x how you x" in every area of life... but most are impressionable, I want to say fools, but impressionable people.

Even I began skiing skiing because I thought it amazed me, the idea of skiing backwards and seeing wackflips off huge kickers in Happy Dayz etc. Holy shit, what was that, D-Spin 1080 No Grab!? I don't give a shit, it looked sick!

Add triples to the equation and judges possible rewarding technicalilty over style in a competition like the Olympics and you have your first wolrd-wide idols in the making, building a foundation of "Wow" on the spectator side over "Wow" on the skier's side.

Well theres still people out there just hiking gnarly backcountry chutes spending there time outdoors and not competing at all. Sure it will change how some people in the future ski but the thing about skiing is there are so many faces of it. Freestyling, big mountain, mountaneer skiing.

Sure things are getting gnarlier because skiings a sport that pushes boundaries and limits and as we evolve the sport things are going to change. But look on this site at all the kids talking about how sick a dub cork 7 is and the fact that pros are still willing to throw stuff like that in a competition. Look at all the urban and crazy rails people are doing.

Skiing isn't all about triples, sure big ass jumps and tricks are appreciated more by the folks who don't ski but I can't see the olympics changing the way everyone skis in the future. Skiing used to be ariels and moguls and racing. That still exists and strives, and have been olympic sports for ages. Freeskiing as an olympic sport is a good thing in my opinion as soon as people get inspired by this "new" type of skiing they will be much more likely to look it up on youtube, see all these big mountain videos and urban skiing and maybe that will apeal to them more, skiing will always be what the future chooses to make of it. Sure competitions wont be won by a 360 mute anymore but skiing will always still be free.

Think about it do you think anyones going to want to watch a hour and a half ski movie of identical tricks with identical grabs, their will still be films of all kinds of different things and skiing will progress in many different ways. The fact is skiing is always going to have controversial judging because even if you know how certain tricks are harder then others its hard to rate a easier trick done perfectly smooth over a harder trick thats just the slightest bit sketchy.

Just saying skiing is not all of a sudden going to change into one thing or be a completely different sport just because the olympics, if anything it will just expand it and bring more money and talent to an already thriving sport.

I think you are really, REALLY underestimating mob mentality in the sphere of sports and glorified competitions like the Olympics.

There's nothing wrong with controversial judging as long as it remains in the hands of people within the sport, at least. Style, technicality etc. if judged, should still stay subjective and free. One judge might appreciate a hucked triple 1800 for the flair it gives, but a more style-oriented judge will keep the score down - in the end, both will probably give top scores to a perfectly landed and thrown Sw Dub 1080 Japan. Not because it's mandatory or flawless in execution, but because it is a stylish and technical trick put down smoothly, deserving the praise it gets.

O I totally agree on the judges part. Signed the petition. It takes skiers to recognize the specifics and what not of a sport. I was just disagreeing with some of the posts above saying the olympics should not at all be a part of skiing. I mean look at snowboarding its been in the olympics since 1998 basically since these things have been progressing don't know to much about snowboarding but I see plenty of good urban edits coming just on here plus thats it t hats all and the art of flight were all awesome. So yes definately want judges to be all skiers who actually know the sport rather then people just counting spins and seeing how high they went. If we accomplish that I think the olympics will be a great thing for skiing is all. :)

Signed, maybe put this in non-ski gabber to get more traffic? I feel like this is important enough to do so.
