People with MCL experience

I was looking up types of tears for MCL. It seems like I have a type 1 tear looking at the symptoms (because my knee is not swollen), but a very noobish trainer suggested I have a type 2 tear.

So anyways if my knee isn't swollen is it most likely a type 1 (miss one week skiing) or type 2 tear (miss probably a month skiing)

+k for helpful answers

I just did the same thing today. Shit sucks.

Test the looseness of your knee by bending it a little bit and pushing outward on your ankle. If your knee is real loose and stretches you'll be out awhile. If it feels fine you will be better pretty soon.

Wear a knee brace and keep gently stretching it. If you have really good insurance you should go to a doctor. If not I wouldn't worry about it. As long as it doesn't feel like your knee is going to buckle it will heal on it's own.

MCL's are tricky though. If you have strong muscles around your knee, it can feel fine even with a full tear. You can't rule out meniscus damage either. Knees really suck to injure.

I had a type 2 tear a couple years back. Type one is a strain or minimal tear. Type 2 is a partial tear. And type three is a full tear (btw type 3 is the only type most docs will operate on for MCLs). It differs person to person, but if you notice swelling it may be because of a at least a partial tear.
like any ligament It takes time to heal. I felt okay to walk and run at 4 weeks without being worried of slipping on it and confident to do new tricks on skis at like 8 or 9 weeks.
If you find out that you did tear it then go with a Berg composite knee brace (if you can work it with your insurance that is)

Partial thread jack.

I twisted my knee early in the day skiing today and was able to ski the day out. I really don't think I tore anything because the pain is almost nonexistent except when I extend my knee and flex. Will I be okay with some RICE or should I sit out for awhile?

if it hasn't swollen up yet, then it probably isn't torn. Your body's reaction to a tare will be inflammation and you will feel that pain and notice the swelling. Ice it, elevate it, and take it easy for a few. If things persist, go get it checked.

The 'noobish' trainer is looking out for you. I would follow his recommendation, better that then have to get surgery and rehab all summer.
