People who refuse to hike

when Mt Snow opened in October I hiked the park all day. When I try a new trick and fall, mainly on a rail, I want to run up there and retry it as soon as possible while it is fresh in my mind. Taking the chair up and then re-trying you lose the feel of what you did wrong imo.

As far as backcountry and sick lines, which i think the op is mainly talking about, I'd welcome the opportunity. I think you'd appreciate your turns more knowing you hiked it.

There's no hike-able terrian besides the park in NJ, right? If there is, where the hell is it? If I lived somewhere like out west where I could hike in late september or something to ski fresh snow I'd be out there all day. When I go to Abasin on spring break I'm gonna go past the lift in the bowl and hike back.

Why Hike when you can skin? It's a fuck of a lot easier/faster... hiking in deep snow - that's just a school boy error.... ;-)

Take a lift as far as you can go - then hike yo ass off all day long... after the Christmas eating and drinking shenanigans... i need to hike some shit!!

hike the park is imo the best way of progression. You can concentrate on a trick and practice it non-stop at the same rail or box until you get the trick.

I actually love how 99% of the ppl are too lazy too hike. That way there's more pow for me and i don't even have to hike that far at all !

guy that is so false, i dont like hiking whatsoever, i just like skiing normal trails, trees and bumps and then laping through the park and trying to connect tricks in one run, and there is no way im lazy, i play sports all year round, and i do hike sometimes i just prefer to get my turns in on real trails then hiking a little box

Hiking makes it so rewarding and you can boast that you got the best snow because you hiked that bit higher, even if you didn't....

i love to go for a little hike, but if everybody hiked and tracked out the snow you were hunting then there would be not point in hiking... so i don't really care that many people don't hike, better options for those few that do! (like me!!!)
no pain no gain

I like hiking... hiking a rail in the park is a bit annoying, but i do like to hike up mountains on occasion... skinning is actually pretty fun... a pain in the ass but enjoyable, and a great workout

lll hike some rails and shit in our park but no way in hell would i hike to ski the groomers. id also hike to hit some sick line but i dont get the oppurtunity very often.

I will always hike for better snow or spends hours hiking a rail or jump to learn a new trick. It's not always my favorite thing to do (in a perfect world you could just ski continuiously) but it's usually very worth it and there are lots of advantages!

dude seriously i hate when people complain. I love to hike. I feel like i earn the turn, after every hike i turn to the people on the lift and say fuck you slackers

While we're on the subject, you know what else would mean more freshies? The end of the fat ski. Seriously, those of you who end up working in skiing, we desperately need some sort of conspiracy, like a skiing illuminati, whose goal is to end fat skis forever so that everyone and their mom is skiing on skinny little carving sticks again. I would happily go back to the era where 85mm waists are really really fat if it means I'm the only one in the bowl. It's gotten to the point where I barely get good lines anymore. Maybe 2-3 laps then it's tracked. I need a snowmobile.

Dude im with you on this one cuz even today i was workin on some shit off a jump in our park and by the time i got to the bottom, waited in line, rode up, and skiied down to the park id forgotten what i did wrong the last time or what i was really focusing on. Hiking fuckin rules. End of story.

i hike every now and then. the only time i really do hike is when i am pissed off at myself for messing up, or want to try something really bad. but if i could i would hike alot more then what i do. mostly i don't hike because the people i roll with just dont want to hike at all, or if i do hike they just wait at the bottom of the rail. then they bitch about how longs its taking. so i just chose not to deal with it and ski down all the time.

I agree as awesome as what fat skis allow talented skiers to do they also allow people with comparitively low ability levels to access sick shit. I am one person that has know prob ripping pow on my S4's if I have to (and my powder skis are S5's)!

And get a sled they are highly recommended but be warned you might stop skiing as much.

My friends and I hike to our favorite spot at winter park multiple times a day. we hardly ever see anyone there, and theres always fresh untracked snow for days after a decent dump.

please stick to lifts and groomers, leave the good skiing for us :)

two days ago i did my first snowshoe hike and it was so much fun.

last winter in japan i used to hike/traverse a lot. so rewarding and you'll get the good stuff to ski

I was on the lift this morning (pow day) with this dude who was rocking 205cm, 70mm underfoot, straight out of the early 90's or older. It was great! We were talking about the difference between his and my 190 Bibby Pro's.

Me though - it's not what's under the feet, it's where you take them. Today was the busiest day I have ever seen at Red Mountain - but I just went to the unmarked, gnar runs - had top to bottom untracked (like, literally untracked) all morning. 6 runs of steep, deep, and gnar - had to "hike" 20 meters for it. It was enough for no one to follow.

i hike smaller features when working on new tricks but honestly why would you make a thread about this let alone care about the topic?

one of the most rewarding things is hiking a cliff trying to land something and finally stomping it for the first time

Maybe soon you will get what you want, and it will be the "cool thing" to do. And gapers will cause a bunch of avalanches on the killer back country runs, and all the cool terrain will be skied off immediately.

Or maybe you will be lucky AND WONT GET YOUR WISH!

I started running 4 miles every other day a few weeks before ski season so that I would be able to hike rails for hours on end while the lazy out of shape people took the lift. I love hiking as long as I am fresh. I'm not a fan of hiking at the end of a huge day though.

i thought u meant like hiking a nice rail or suttin but ya hiking hills around the house making hits and havin' a good time is cool

this is my dream.

i want to live out west near some good hills and do a whole lot of hiking....and snowmobiling :P

but here in southern NY, the only hiking you can do is from strip mall to strip mall.

One of my friends I ski with refuses to go do any trails 95% of the time. And would'nt even consider hiking. All he does is park and he can't slide a rail. Or anything that you have to pop on...anything.
