PEOPLE POST MORE ON IG > NS

[tag=123327]@Newschoolers[/tag] yo,

You gotta find a way to make NS function like Instagram's smaller formats. Like minute clips, Reels, Tik Toks. And we can just swipe through em, Like Imgur on Desktop, Like Reels on Mobile.

Dude I stare at so many sports merely because with swiping like this It's just Hammer after Hammer after High Quality Hammer.

I do admit it Mainstreams Skiing. IG has Mainstreamed Skiing. But Don't just play the IG game. Bring that format back here. Have THE BEST Collection of Clips to ever Grace this Website. IG will never be able to compete. Nobody runs Mainstream IG Skiing that would know more than the NS Archives & Future "Classic Ski Reels."

All I'm sayin is NS could find a higher patronage if you adjust the NS format to include Successful Mainstream formats such as Reels or TikTok. Notice how Those things are Proper Nouns Now. They're that New and that Big.

You got an NS IG, LINK IN BIO, but how many people stop there. "ahhhh I'm not gunna see the website, This here is fine." And they never visit NS.

Give them a reason to check it out, then to never go back.

Better Reels. Better Clips. Better Experience. Because its all RIGHT HERE.

Clips on IG Shine bright but then OUT in a day. because of the sheer non-skiing side of IG. They just don't care but are occupying practically the same space unnecessarily.

(And to everyone, More Jerries Incoming. But I promise you, you were once a Jerry, I was too. Here we are now. We need more Jerries to Grow the Sport, We need excitement in the community to have special community events.)

Also what if we adjusted the format to make NS Accounts like "Rider Portfolios."

It can be used this way already. But It's not organized to easily facilitate that type of approach to this website.

And not everyone has to have one. Just an option window to fill out. A place to Put things. You can have your top favorite 5 edits/ shots right there. You ranked them yourself. So people know what you think your best work is. Basically Tinder. But for Skiers. But it's a detailed-enough portfolio to prove you're not Catfishing people with Camera Angles.

Just a thought

Love Yours Truly,

XKLA

I do agree that NS could capitalize on way more opportunities via insta. They’ve even said theirselves that many kids now don’t know that NS is an actual website (As opposed to just an insta page). Also, a few pros have criticized NS for missing the chance to grow. If I remember correctly, tanner hall was the last one I heard criticizing newschoolers for missed opportunities.

I think most ski users enjoy this format on NS once they use it but how do you convert people to the website? That’s the question

I respectfully disagree with the idea that we should have reels and tiktoks (or anything similar) on NS. Personally I'm concerned that it would lead to oversaturation of content. I like the idea of rider portfolios and I think your statements about jerries is spot on. I had this idea about having an additional feed for videos (in addition to Latest & Top rated) where it's only videos from people who you're friends with. I feel like that could be a good use of the underutilized Friends feature. and of course it would be nice if there was a better way to search for edits, but i know that this has been discussed before

Nah dude Those are great points. I think it should be brought up to be re-evaluated with modern times. Were at a very interesting point in the Internet Age.

Eh maybe. If this would ever happen I would hope that full edits would be kept separate. I'm not scrolling through bullshit to find decent edits. Honestly hate watching skiing on IG beside individual WTF clips.

Bruh it can be both, just like I got single hitters on the Reels, people get a quick idea of what I do and who I am. But I also got full edits in my IG too. You can enjoy Both.

Honestly not a bad idea. I like the idea of NS being a staple for longer length videos though. But it could work forsure.

If we adopted a scroll-ish format it would be sick to be able to filter by video length

These are good ideas that would definitely modernize the NS app with today's standards. With the way the app is currently built however, what you propose would mean shooting our app in the back of the head and starting all over. It's a huge project. When we originally built it, we made due with about 5% of the funding we actually needed to build a proper app. So what we have is a copy of the mobile website with an app feel, via a service called GoNative. Think of it as a Chrome window in a nicer packaging and push notifications. Our current parent company has no interest in investing in our tech so we maintain the site and app as best as we can with our allotted resources. Unfortunately, this means little new feature development until we either get new a parent company that wants to invest in the future of NS, or until our team can buy NS from the current owners and invest in it ourselves (though they also made clear they have no interest in selling NS as an individual property). In the end, this ain't happening for some time unless TRVP finds a shortcut with our existing setup.

We do appreciate the input though, this would be a sick new version and use for the app.

Also if NS worked in certain ways that benifited/brought more attention to creators I can easily see the bulk of ski content and viewership moving back to newschoolers. The problem is that the amount of clout/benifits someone gets, especially a pro gets from an instagram post vs a newschoolers post is problematic. The more content on NS = more people on NS = more benefits to using the site = more content and it loops. Not sure what needs to be done but I would love newschoolers to get huge like I hear it was in the past.

I understand that funding is a big problem but there's probably skiers out there who would love to help out newschoolers (I certainly would). There might even be people willing to do free app development. I just think that you guys could take advantage of how dedicated the community is.

Also newschoolers already lets you post youtube videos, it would be really cool if you could also upload instagram posts (I know this is way harder) because at the moment the only way people are seeing instagram posts is on instagram whereas for longer youtube-like videos newschoolers is my platform of choice

Yeah i dunno if its worth trying to be instagram or tik tok. If its similar content then why would people download another app and switch? I think NS has gotta advertise its community and forums idk

I feel like there are a lot of good ideas I've seen floated out there about how to revive this slowly dying website. From what I gather though, the site is driven exclusively by sponsors who provide just enough to maintain the site status quo. There seems to be zero interest in exploring any idea that could improve things or drive new members here. The site is at homeostasis pointing slightly down.

Merch? OMG its too expensive.

Stickers even? OMG too expensive.

FWT coverage? OMG we don't have the resources.

Any coverage at all of non-freestyle skiing events? No.

Improvements to the app? OMG its too expensive.

Anything? OMG its too expensive.

I miss the days of having to watch a ski movie to see a trick.

I don't think changing NS is the right move, just as you said chris, people don't post edits anymore. Fuck instagram, fuck watching one clip at a time, make an edit. People who like skiing will watch an edit but y'all keep giving them clips on instagram. NS isn't the problem here, its the way people choose to consume their content, NS hasn't change what they do, people changed what they do.

NS has promoted the website through the app and social media for years, it didn't do much tbh, we get some good traffic for comp results or some breaking news, but post a dope edit from the community and nobody cares ?‍♂️

Wow what a Dead perspective on NS. I'm sorry you refuse to adapt to new technology and new cultural norms as a result. That's awful that you cling to a failing method. Shit. I guess we'll just bury you with NS then...

What do you propose NS does? Because NS cant just become instagram, thats not only not possible but its a terrible business decision. NS is a media platform with a forum attached to it, the forum will die at some point, but news/videos/etc will likely be the bulk of viewership, statements like these make its very clear that you and most people have no idea how NS operates and what it takes to even keep the ship afloat.

I'm sorry you've failed a patron of your site. As a patron I should know what NS is, therefore, I as a patron can use it fully and Effectively. But apparently I thought NS was Cooler and more Capable than it actually is...MY BAD.

Gotta say, I'm with ya on this one. Can't just sit back and watch the world go by. Adapt to the changing market or be left behind, which unforunatly the parent company and apparently eheath are cool with. Someone floated the idea of being inclusive to snowboarders and their community awhile ago which would be a good start IMO since the cultures feed off of each other anyway and would require little to no capital investment to do. The ns ig page also used to feature the top rated member clips each week which I would imagined helped to push taffic to the site. Just got to keep pushing forward.

I asked you a pretty basic question, why didn't you answer? Also, this isn't 'my' site, I am not affiliated with NS in any way other than being a moderator.

What do you think NS could do to make it cooler and more capable? I'd love to hear your business plan, even though you don't seem like much of a business man.

Would also love to hear your plan for NS to overtake social media.

Also, I don't work for NS, again I am not associated with NS. I can't believe I have to repeat this so many times.

the beauty of this site is that active members get to see it all. I'd much rather watch a 4, 5, 10 minute edit of a homie on here dropping 360s and lip b2s than some North Face MF hucking doubles. If you want to get jaded by watching impossibly good clips on instagram all day more power to ya, but don't bring it here.

just my 2 cents

I mean I put a couple ideas in there did I not? Don't understand why you get in such a wad every time someone says 'hey maybe this could be better.' No one is saying we're going to take the facebook empire here, just maybe do more than watch the ship sink.

This is the inherent problem with your ideas, money is everything, nobody just does shit for free, it fails every time.

Also, NS is owned by a corporation and until that changes I wouldn't expect any sort of significant changes.

Can you really blame them for not putting a ton of their own time into something they have no ownership of?

Really dont think people are going to download a separate app just to scroll thru the "instagram" of that specific sport

Also side note, great edits cant truly be appreciated on a phone screen.

Its a bad idea because

1. the parent company already owns a snowboarding brand, why would they interfier with that?

2. the first snowboard post NS puts everyone would lose their minds

3. continued promotion of snowbaording would likely cause skiers to stop following/going on NS and no snowboarders would follow/go to NS.

NS is a skiing brand, the member clips was my idea that I executed for years, it had no effect on our traffic, we did it to hype up the community.

I honestly think the power of NS is in the forums. I was a lurker before I used the forums. I would argue that they are what really engage people. Plus, NS is a treasure trove of information on products and advice.

I mean look at what Reddit is able to do with their forum style setup. I think if you can capitalize on that, it would be a game changer.

On the surface, I would think that younger kids don’t use forums but being on here and engaging with people has proven that theory wrong. People still want to engage with people with similar interests, regardless of age.

But I mean this is all effectively a Moot point seeing as the ownership of NS has decided not to move the dial forward

Forums are dying, reddit is really the only exception. NS forum traffic has steadily declined since social media became a thing, it gets worse every year. Forums are a product of computers, not phones. We made an app, nobody cared, we spam social media trying to get people to go to NS, didn't work.

I think your idea of "moving the dial forward" is a bit misguided, what do you think NS should do to dial it forward?

First point is valid but the other two are an assumption that is really based on nothing. A lot of members on here do both sports anyway and I think everyone at least appreciates both. Idk, just sad when ever literally idea is floated the red names have to drop the parent company explaination and other old timers trash any ideas without actually giving amy consideration. I get it, not everything is possible but not everything is impossible either.

THERE WASN'T A REASON TO LEAVE IG FOR NS WHEN NS DIDN'T CHANGE & ADAPT AT ALL TO MEET THE NEW CULTURE.

But like you said, you not affiliated with NS. You just an old Limp Cock.

When I say move the dial forward, I mean continue a push for more site traffic and engagement. Things don’t work. That’s common. Companies and websites evolve and keep tweaking their efforts. It’s the nature of things now. What differentiates NS from any other insta page? There’s a million ways people can go with their efforts.

Also, I use the app for forums. I don’t even use NS on my computer. That’s another added step of logging in, etc. My phone is my distraction piece of choice. The app is very glitchy and that’s a major problem because it disincentives people on the edge of engaging by adding an extra barrier. These things add up.

Look, I am just glad that NS exists. I’m not hear to stand on a soapbox and lecture about this and that. It’s just my 2 cents meant to be taken in a constructive atmosphere of discussion.

Maybe you don't look around the site that much, but even today videos with snowboarding in them get a "why is there snowboarding" comments.
