Patroller Strike Sunshine?

The Scurfields have done a lot for Calgary and AB, in general, but it looks like at least four people have been fired for actually just doing their jobs. If anyboy there had any sense, they'd rehire these guys and do the right thing.

I was wondering if anyone here had any solid insight as to what really happenned at Shine.

If so, please blab.

It's just between you, me and the wall.

I just posted this thread on Ski Gabber a couple of minutes ago:

https://newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/596114/

This is seriously fucked up and will hit locals and season pass holders the most.

The guy who got fired on tues caught ralphs kid in an avi closed area not to long ago.

literally the only thing he has done wrong. he was one of the hardest working patrollers and did his best job every day he was at work.

As far as I understand, a few weeks ago, they caught scurfields son in a closed inbounds area. As per standard procedure and like every sign at the shine says, they pulled his pass. Obviously ralph didnt like this and fired 4 of the top snow safety/mountain ops folk for "personal reasons". Almost immediately after, more patrollers just walked out. All in all they lost around 120 years of experience. The other night, 16 remaining patrollers collectively decided not to show up for work as a form of protest. This is obviously a very abridged version of whats going on and the issues run way deeper, but i'm at work and hungover. What does this mean for you? Not all lifts open and at this rate the dive will never open this year.

There was a semi-long article in the Calgary Sun today about it. It gave both of their names, thought I don't have it handy.

So they got fired because they talked to the media about sunshine when their contract specifically states that they are not allowed to do that. I'm not condoning the actions sunshine has taken but in this instance they were justified.

Ya the dive might be a while this year. Not just because of snow but they are down to a few snow safetys this year. Not saying patrol cant help or anything but for actual snow safety. Rowen got fired, jock got fired/quit, sass moved. All that is left now is brendan and rory. Lots of responsibilty for 2 people

It's justified to contractually prevent your workers from talking to newspaper reporters? What Stalinist regime do you come from. I still think that's bullshit.

Justified is the wrong word in this situation. What I mean is that shine legally did nothing wrong this time since the patrollers did sign a legally binding contract that does not allow them to talk to the media about sunshine. Like I said, i don't support it but unlike the first round of people getting the boot, this one does have a reason behind it. I don't agree with that way of doing business, and agree with you that its bullshit, but its tough to get around a legally binding document on this one.

talked to one of the guys today, he was blown away by the whole ordeal. one of the patrollers fired on the 29th of december is the one who opened up the freeride zones ten years ago.
Without him Silver City will never re-open. Wild-west and Delirium will both have to wait until next year and so will Hayes Hill.
Those spots are basically the only reason i go to the shine.

TGR has a great thread on this right now for anyone looking for more information and some good laughs. It's circulating around the first few pages of their ski and snowboard forum.

This is ridiculous man, fucking Scurfield kid got his daddy to fire people just cuz he was caught out of bounds, Such shit
People who are well respected in the business too that have been there for 20 years like give me a fucking break. Lost so much respect for Sunshine over this.
Although i hear the patrollers are suing for improper firring i hope they win that shit they deserve every fucking penny.

i heard the terrain park supervisor quit too and the upper park still isnt finished, can anyone confirm this?

wont be going to sunshine anytime soon with this bullshit going on. i wish the patrollers the best of luck with their wrongful dismissal case.

Can confirm that the supervisor quit. Half of grizzly park is done, and there are now some features in the lower divide park but no jumps yet that I know of. I haven't been there since saturday and needless to say I wasn't anywhere near the park.

If anyone is directly involved in the case PM me, I'm a total nerd and kind of want to read the pleadings.

Was there on sunday. Grizzly is no where near done. But they are taking features OUT of lower divide to put into grizzly. There were probably 5 features on sunday.

Sounds shitty. Haven't been to Sunshine since that one Saturday. The Lake is killin' it pretty hard right now.

You would think someone who's owned the business that long would know that you have to have grounds for reasonable dismissal. You also have to give a certain amount of notice before firing someone who has worked at the company that long and if you fire them without notice the company is liable to pay for the time the worker was supposed to get for notice. I think it's 2 weeks of notice per year or something.
But this generates so much negative publicity for them, it's funny that that little kid is gonna own sunshine someday too, and I don't expect there to be a lot of changes for the better. Ralph should have used his head on this one.

Ralphie and his kids blew it.

These guys have substantially hurt their business.

Maybe not in a good snow year (this year's been good), but in bad snow years like the last two, it's loyalty that keeps customers coming back.

This entire scandalous story destructs brand loyalty (and, subsequently, product quality).

Sometimes, rich people have more money than brains.

This is one.

i work at shine and this is pretty accurate. up until the very last part about strawberry being down but that was 100% just a maintenance thing. but it has nothing to do with the story

So just to let everybody know whats going withthe park.....here is a little update. We are coming up to the end of the build, and looking to open within the next week or so. All the decks/piles are built and all that we need now are functional take offs ( and even many of those are built). So have no fear about the park.

On the patrol side of things, all i can say is go to www.supportskipatrol.com for a info from the patrol side of things.

So up date, did some grooming in there the day before yesterday. Had to tune the jumps a little bit, but the full park schould be open by now. Hope your guys enjoy! Plus if any of you have any feed back at all send me a PM on here. The more feedback i get, the better we can build for you.
