Just 45 days after the September 11 attacks, with virtually no debate, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act. Many parts of this sweeping legislation take away checks on law enforcement and threaten the very rights and freedoms that we are struggling to protect. For example, without a warrant and without probable cause, the FBI now has the power to access your most private medical records, your library records, and your student records... and can prevent anyone from telling you it was done.

The Department of Justice is expected to introduce a sequel, dubbed PATRIOT II, that would further erode key freedoms and liberties of every American.

The ACLU and many allies on the left and right believe that before giving law enforcement new powers, Congress must first re-examine provisions of the first PATRIOT Act to ensure that is in alignment with key constitutional protections.

They could go in your house set up cameras to survalince you and not even say a word.

PRIVACY AND UNLAWFUL SEARCHES

The government could bug, wiretap, or search anyone in America for up to 15 days without going to any court if Congress had authorized the use of military force (i.e., under circumstances which currently exist). [Section 103]

The government could seize personal information about Americans (including credit information, educational transcripts, etc.) in a wide range of circumstances without the approval of any court by issuing "administrative subpoenas" (i.e., subpoenas or letters issued by bureaucrats and not authorized by any court). [Sections 126, 128, & 129]

All of this information could be used to prosecute Americans. [Section 105]

If the government, incredibly, was so inept that it failed to comply with the virtually non-existent limitations on bugs and searches, there would be a defense in a proceeding against an agent who violated the law and/or the Constitution, thereby effectively legalizing all searches. [Section 106]

Individuals and groups which engage in or advocate civil disobedience or Second Amendment rights, including GOA, could be classified as "foreign powers" and subject to electronic surveillance for up to a year without the approval of any court. [Section 104]

Wow, I can't believe the lack of interest in this topic. This has nothing to do with democrats or republicans. This has to do with FREEDOM, which most REPUBLICANS are so vocal about protecting. Funny that you're blaming the democrats for a set of laws generated by a conservative administration.

the day the patriot act was passed, werent there only 3 members of congress in congress? i remember seeing something pretty messed up about that.

To me its intresting that history is simply repeating its self again. This is exactly what hittler did when he was makeing germany into a police state and dictatorship. He was elected, then he bombed his own capital building and said if you want to be safe and continue to live free, then i need to take away your rights, but its only for your own protection. Look what happened there.

yah, i was wrong. I was getting my bills mixed up.

But the patriot act was voted on when no one in the senate had read it, and only 3 people voted against it because they wernt going to pass an act that they went being alowed to read.

not going to set survalince up on anyone? out of the six hundred and some people arrested for being terrorists in the USA, Not one of was convicted. All of these innocent people had survalince set up on them and had to go threw a hellish time in the courts. Evidence that was used against them? a family vacitaion video to disneyland. scribles made by a deliousional and clininicly insane man which were left in the house from a previous occupancy and Having islamic litrature...

They will set up survaliance on anyone they want to. Not having anything to hide is the worst reason in the world to allow the government to take away your rights and freedoms. It doesnt matter if you have something to hide. It matters that the government has decided for you that you dont need privacy anymore.

A very interesting part is that if Patriot2 is passed, the United States will launch"big brother" satellites that will servay and look over not only the continental us, but over the whole world. That is too much power. So when you look up, say hello and give em the bird.
