Park/Pipe Skis and Size

'm instructing at Breck. over winter, so my time this year will be left to the terrain park at Keystone during the night. I'm an all mountain skier with Volkl Karmas. I'm looking at getting some park/pipe skis also. I have been leaning toward the Anthems quite a bit, but I am up for opinions on other options. Also, what size ski do I need for park/pipe? I am 6', 175-185, and ride 177cm on the Karmas. I appreciate all the advice.

use your karmas... if not we need more info, do u like a stiff or soft ski? or like where do u ski

I've got them mounted for all-mountain and they work great everywhere, from deep powder to groomed. I was going to move to a center-mounted setup and saw it as an opportunity to go ahead and get some more skis. The anthem is really what I am leaning towards. They are setup for centermount and seem to be the optimal ski for park from what I have read. Obviously, reading isn't everything. Stiff or soft, I have no idea what is good for park, so that is where I need y'alls help.

soft skis are good for jibbing and buttering and are a lot of fun. the downside is that at speed they can get squirrely and are more prone to wash out on large jumps. stiffer skis are just the opposite.

It's kinda tough because softer skis are generally considered to be better in the park, whereas stiffer skis are better in the pipe. If you are really focused on rails and jibs I would probably go with a softer ski like an anthem or invader. For pipe and big park jumps you would probably be more comfortable on a medium to stiffer flexing park ski like an ar6 or rossi scratch especially at your height and weight. Again, it is all personal preference.

Well, I enjoy the jumps. That is what I really want to get into, but at the same time, I've never really attempted rails, etc. Seeing that I have some fairly stiff skis already, I would probably want to go with the complete opposite. Since the Anthems seem to be really soft, would getting them in the longest, 178, be the optimal to help compensate for the "loss of speed" capability of softer skis.

anything in a 178 to 183 would work.

your current skis are great park skis. are you looking for a more forward mount or something. Anthems only really work if theyre center so you have to trust them. BUt its a sick ski, snappy and soft. but still great for jumps. If you can find a pair, theyre cheap and good times!

im 6' and ride 182s center mounted. so.. yeah, something like taht would be good. if you want park specific... id say thrusters. they are super good for the price. but anthems are alright. though for some reason i just dont trust line

Yeah, I just want to go more center-mounted. Mine are setup more for all-mountain. I usually ski the bowls, shoots, some trees, fast groomers. A ski specifically for the park would be the best. I'll be doing Keystone every night and I'll keep my karmas more for instructing and freeskiing. I had always heard you want to go shorter in the park. I don't see myself getting into the pipe much, just jumps and rails. The antems seemed to still be capable of going all mountain even given their center mount; that is, if I decide to take them out on the mountain one day.

Seriously. This guy is 6' 185lbs. Kinda tall for a park skier really. Anything center mounted shorter than 180 is going to feel way short.

Well, I decided to go with the 178 Anthems. Hopefully those are long enough in relation to the last few comments. I had my mind leaning towards the Anthems obviously, but no one/group really pushed towards any ski and a couple of shops that I have talked to said the Anthems are the choice this year. I will probably order tomorrow or Wednesday. Any last minute suggestions on bindings? I was looking at Looks, but don't know which one is the best. Also, Salomon was highly recommended too.

first off, don't listen to shops. Fortunately, they recommended a pair of sick skis. I have the same ones (and 178 is fine for you). I mounted px12's on mine and they are good, but there are TONS of threads for this. Just search bindings on the searchbar. Oh and make sure you get a set with brakes wide enough for the 90 midwaist. (go with 100mm brakes).

That will be a fun setup.

Check out the Moment Reno Jibs. They're the best park ski I've ridden to date. Tons of energy, hold a great edge, and have half the swing weight of anything out there. They're pretty cheap too. At least give em a look at momentskis.com.

Actually ya... I just got on mine.

I like the rockers about a million times more, but the jibs are pretty sick too.

they just dont stop popping, ever! stiff though, real stiff.

Real quick question, I'm in a similar situation to this guy except I'm 6' 145-50 pounds and III skiier but want a park ski to learn in the park. People keep telling me to go long but would a 171-177 ski work?
