Parents Just Don’t Understand

So it’s been absolutely nuking snow all day and through tonight, so I had planned to go to the mountain tomorrow. I’ve never really been to my local on a pow day so I was stoked. I’m 17 so I still live with my parents and they don’t wanna let me go because of the roads. But I drive a subaru and I put snow tires on it and am more than capeable of driving through this. I even drove around with my dad today in the worst of the storm to show him I could and he agreed I did well. But they still won’t let me go. They don’t think my excitement is worth the risk. And they’re probably right, but I’m sick of skiing on a machine made sheet of ice. Anything I could say to them to change their mind?

Just send it, a pow day > any punishment your parents can dish out

JK, respect your parents lmao but also don’t freak about it, try and calmly explain that you are capable of keeping a level head and driving slow, and try explaining that you will communicate throughout the day so that they know you’re good.

idk about helping tomorrow but in the future try to drive with them to the mountains maybe to prove that you can handle snow driving. I'm in the same situation w online school and def hard to convince parents to let me drive up solo

Driving post storm is a lot better than during the storm. Maybe they can be convinced after the plows are out and the roads are cleared up a bit? Snow tires are clutch as is leaving early when there arnt many people on the road. The biggest danger is other clowns who are driving too fast on bad tires.

That being said, now that I’m old and wise (not that old) I kind of avoid driving in storms and try and get in position before hand if possible. It actually can be really dangerous depending on how windy it is, how far you have to go, etc.

I’m in the same exact boat as you. My parents are the same way.

Where I’m from in rural PA, there are wayyy less people out on the roads during a storm. It’s honestly more dangerous for me to drive to the hill at 4pm on a Friday afternoon.

Go slow, and drive real defensively. If you see a car flying towards you and you think he’s gonna lose control, quickly scope a spot on the side of the road that you’d rather crash into than get hit head on by some asshat going 55 miles an hour with an inch of snow on the road.

Make sure your winter tires’ tread isn’t real worn either. Cause that will just obviously make them useless. I have a Subaru as well with good tires and I never have any issues whatsoever as long as I’m not going too fast.

explain these things to your parents and be cool about it and they might take your side.

Idk, it sucks. Just remember their your parents and you have to live with them for a while still. They may be wrong but they're trying to look out for you because you're still their kid even if it's safe enough.

Idk that said personally I'd probably just send it, but having blowouts with the parents isn't super fun.

Def plead the case as best you can about having a sub and snow tires. Hell i used to drive a shitty front wheel drive chevy with bald tires to the mtn every day. Worked winter since 14 so as soon as I got my license would drive any day i wasnt in school or rock night skiing.

Idk man, either way I hope theres some pow stashes for you if you can't get up tomorrow.

Good luck!

Jokes on you my parents just take me anyways cause I don’t have a driver license and can’t get one for another year

Lol this was me on Sunday. Ended up driving up and it was fine. You gotta start like driving around when it snows more so ur parents trust you more. I barely was allowed to go but had a blast
