I'm looking to buy a used Panasonic DVX100a soon and I would like to have some comments about this camera. I'm a beginner and I have a low budget less than 1200$.

So tell me if you like or not this camera and why.

Thanks!

DOPE ccamera. MattyB has one for sale I belive. for like 900!
Good manual settings, scene files. best SD cam out iMO

I was torn over selling my hv30 and going to DVX. BUT I decided not to (possibly dumb) resale value of DVX is getting very low. I cant really justify spending much more than a grand for my camera so HVX/HMC pretty much out of question. Reconsidering, DVX's definetly a good choice, I just dont know when they will become reallly outdated.

Someone talk me into buying one.

my friend has the camera and he loves it, the manual controls are great, its a great camera if you dont mind no hd =]

if you are a beginner i would HIGHLY suggest that you do not get the DVX. you will not know how to do anything and most likely all your footy is going to look like dump. Dont get the dvx unless you know how to use all or most of its manual features. if your going to get it and keep everything on auto then you are just wasting your money and it will just be another one of those kids who has a super nice camera and does not know how to use it

Why get a camera that suits perfectly? I think its better to get a camera that exceeds a person's level of knowledge so that they improve and progress as a videographer.

If you want something you can just point and shoot, and don't really have any interest in filming other than to get "proof" of tricks or whatever, then I would suggest an HV40. But if you want to actually learn how to manually set up a camera, then there is no better camera than the DVX series. This camera gives you more control over the image than most HDV cameras that were available at the time of its release (I'm not sure about now, or if people are even stuck using HDV still).

As for it being obsolete... it's only obsolete if you want it to be obsolete. I was watching some footage from my DVX on my 1080p LCD TV and it was comparable to the HVX footage I've seen on it. One can argue that there is no comparison but in my opinion the difference is very miniscule. 720p or 1080p really isn't the high resolution everybody hypes it up to be; it's all relatively "standard definition" anyway...

Were you watching the hvx footage with an HD input? I find this statement quite ridiculous, because hvx footage on a 1080p tv is fucking amazing, at least all of the hvx footage ive seen on it. If you watched the hvx footy with an SD input, then its obviously not gonna look much better than dvx...

Well than that's mind boggling. I couldn't see that being true at all, ive seen both dvx and hvx on my tv...

Then I think the choice is obvious, since the DVX is hands down the nicest SD camera you can buy. Plus it comes with The DVX Book by Barry Green, which explains literally every aspect of the camera in simple terms.
