Paint or Flags?

On jumps which do you prefer? Paint on the corners of the launch and across the knuckle? Or flags on the launch, nothing to mark the landing?

My mountain believes that flags are superior and that "everyone prefers the flags" having just recently switched over from paint which they have stopped using. Yet everyone I've talked with on mountain has said they prefer the paint as it makes spotting your landing so much easier.

Obviously park crew likes having less work to do, but aside from that I don't see any real benefits to park skiers. In fact without someone out there painting full time I imagine they'll be laying off some of the park crew members, while some bigwig upstairs is congratulating themselves on their cost saving measures. If the change is solely because they're cheap, then I wish they would just own up to it, instead of lying to my face.

Which do you prefer?

Please don't act like your park crew is lazy simply because they don't like to paint the jumps.

Honestly if you're going to be a sarcastic asshole at least look into it a bit more.

Some people prefer not painting because it looks better. I honestly prefer clean myself. I don't mind flags but don't really care either way.

Paint melts out your corners. The corners are a pain in the ass to keep nice especially if you straight cut your jumps. Depending on what you use, and how much you can end up with colored snow dragging out when you groom.

Even many of the mountains that hold big events don't paint outside of the events. And even the ones that do generally just throw a small L on the corners and nothing on the landing.

Maybe you should just learn how to ski better.

Or believe what you will. The big bad mountain is out to get the park skier. They'll blow 10's of thousands worth of snow in the park, and then cheap out on literally a few bucks worth of paint or dye just because they can. They use that money to fund their plan for world domination and sit in the treetops drinking brandy, laughing as people get hurt on the landings.

"I just bought a private jet with all the money I saved from not dyeing the jumps" - Owner of resort.

Sorry if it sounded like I was attacking park crew, everyone likes things that make their jobs easier, is all that I meant.

This really doesn't have anything to do with park crew, who I think does an excellent job. They only take the orders from higher up. It's the higher ups that I have a problem with, because they're making this decision under the false notion that everyone widely regards no paint as a good move. When this is contrary to my conversations with other park riders, including park crew.

I think they are grossly out of touch with their patrons if they think that no one cared about the change. Everyone I've talked with that actually rides the park agrees with the jumps are worse off without paint.

Idk. I talk to a lot of people that build parks and a lot of people that ride parks and most don't really care. One place I worked we had serious cloud issues and absolutely had to dye in those situations, and sometimes even close the jumpline. Most place it's just a preference thing.

I mean even mtn snow and many other well known park mtns don't dye or even flag their jumps. It's not like your mtn is the only one doing this.

I also had a picture in my "What the fuck were they thinking folder" of a mtn that did every edge of everything with paint. It looked so ridiculous. I wish I knew what mtn it was.

And there's another mtn that builds pretty solid features but does a horrible, not even the least bit straight spray paint line around the take offs, and it makes them look like garbage imo.

Unless you're in a place with crazy fog/cloud problems most people generally don't care as long as the jumps are well built and maintained.

This is in western Washington. 90% of our days are fog days, I probably should have specified that in my original post.

Sorry to spam my own post, but this is what the large line looks like on a very average day in my area. Notice how ridiculously difficult it is to even see the lip of the jump, and that's the same exact view you have looking over the knuckle while in the air.

Last year one of the things I liked about Stevens was the paint on the knuckle. Flags on the lip and paint on the knuckle might be a good option.

why not both and get the best of both worlds? paint so that on overcast days where its not snowing crazy you can still tell where the lip isand the landing is, and flags for when there's soem fresh mid day. that said i don't like 'flags,' i personally prefer the tiny little marker things.

but if your lip for a rail is a foot wide don't fucking put flags...

God hates flags

Paint.

Helps me spot my takeoffs and landings earlier.

But then again, I'm a mogul skier so we basically just do what we want. One time they covered an entire course, moguls and all, because no one could see that day. It was awesome seeing an entire ski run painted red. ahaha.

WOAH WOAH WOAH, UN-HOLLLLD THA PHONE. LOOSEN YOUR BOOTSTRAPS, LET GO OF YOUR PANTS.

I work park crew for one of the best establishments in North America. If anyone knows SPT, they know they are the shit, and if there was a better system, id imagine somebody else would design and build the parks for Some of the biggest parks on the planet, world renowned shoots, and the X Games. So yeah, when i say i know what I'm talking about pertaining to terrain parks, y'all come step. CUZ I KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IM TALKING ABOUT.

If you have ever been to Seven Springs, You would know that our fabled 'spot' terrain park has some STEEP, motherfucking landings, (That we use jump flags for) and every year, USSA comes out with their dumb comps and there dumb rules, and makes us paint the landings. And its beat might i add, and impossible in ski boots without crampons, which we don't have, being in PA. If I had to paint lines on those jumps everyday upon opening, and maintain there neatness, i would shoot somebody. I hate doing it even for one weekend of the year. And we're not lazy. We bust ourselves building these parks, so thats how we know when you need to do something right, or when something is a waste of time, like painting jump lines

If you're talking off your skis you're doing it wrong. Keep your skis on and use them to keep you stable. That's how they paint the steepest winched landings for the big contests.

If you're just wondering around in your boots, you're gonna have a bad time.

Also why single out USSA? That's designed for people to work their way up the to the bigger evens which also paint their course for contest day. At least a good amount. X does, Us Open, I can't remember about dew tour.

I'm just saying. It's not that big of a deal

You can;t hit a rad tranny with flags so I prefer paint, also hate to knock one off and paint is so visible usually. I was at park city a few weeks ago and decided to switch it up and try some of canyons parks, not too great. But they had WHITE flags and it was a cold snowy day and you couldn't absolutely see shit at all.

How much time do you think it takes to paint jumps? it's not like theirs one specialized guy at your mountain who only paints jumps...

there is no substitute for a nice paint job on jumps. rail lips don't need paint but when the sun isn't out and there is no paint on the landings its fucking lame.
