i just turned it on, star trek won best makeup. what did i miss? and continue discussion of the oscars

it was a given

and to the guy above me, i ctrl Fed (find) academy, oscar, and award on the first page of NSG and it came up with nothing, so i assumed there wasnt a thread yet

a jedi master can do countless things when the force is strong with them. much to learn you have.

up in the air is flat, and inglorious basterds got plenty of recognition.
IMO, Hurt Locker is good, but in. say, four years? itll be pretty forgotten, while Avatar will be one of those movies that defined something more. SHitty move, but very far from surprising on all accounts... except on sound mixing and editing and shit.

hurt locker getting best picture was the biggest bullshit ever. its all because the director has a V

seriously, they defuse a bomb, and then another, and then another, the camerawork was over the top shaky, the acting was pretty good, but come on. there wasnt a story

Agreed.

Just watched the movie today and it was pretty cool but Avatar was a million times better. The Hurt Locker isn't a movie I would want to see again. Avatar on the other hand I have already seen twice in 3D and it was awesome.

IMO best picture should have gone to avatar not for its shit poor story and writing, but for revolutionizing hollywood. otherwise inglourious basterds, but i just didnt get the hurt locker winning so much. if a guy directed it it would be so average

Yeah but it was actually a good movie, and nothing very good came out this year. Avatar was fucking retarded and that was the only competition. Now when No Country for Old Men won and Changeling didn't even get a nomination, that was fucking bullshit. Hurt Locker totally deserved it.

Believe me, I loved Avatar more than most people, but in terms of story, depth and acting (the things that matter to the Academy), it didn't hold a flame to The Hurt Locker. Hurt Locker easily deserved best picture.

you've obviously been in a cave all year, Hurt locker was decent, but not better then inglorious basterds. Nothings better then that movie

i think it has more to do with them wanting to be socially relevant and slowly pushing along their liberal agenda then the director being a women.

they really made the troops look like amateurs and painted a poor picture of their SOP's

i said the only reason why i would chose avatar was because of its groundbreaking technology in special effects. in terms of story, depth, and acting, the hurt locker pales in comparison to inglourious basterds

Inglorious Basterd's story was ridiculous, the acting was hit or miss (Brad Pitt was good and that one guy was incredible, everyone else was ok), and the whole thing is just a thinly veiled ripoff of a Sergio Leone movie. Don't get me wrong, it was certainly my favorite movie this year. It didn't deserve an Oscar though. It was like a more mainstream Sukiyaki Western Django, except its a WW2 movie so it isn't quite as obvious. I don't even get why people that aren't familiar with Sergio Leone like it. If I wasn't a fan of those movies I probably would have been disappointed. It wasn't as good as Reservoir Dogs and its not like that won any Oscars. Quentin Tarantino makes movies for movie nerds, not to win Oscars.

i dunno i think hurt locker will be like platoon for our generation.. i know thats realy juxatpoesed to say that BUT YEAH!

kind of a bold statement there man.

i bet there are a lot more iraq war movies to come out of the wood works yet. lets wait a little bit before making that claim. a movie that veterans can agree on rather than hurt locker.

for sure man.. i agree with that.. it was not my intent to claim that this is the iraq war defeined by the movie hurt locker... .. no movie can portray that.. just out of the movies this year.. it was the best in my opionion. i am not gonna go walk up to a vet and be like "hey i saw the hurt locker i know what you went thru" sorry if thats i how i sounded and i resend that previous statement. regarding it being the platoon of our generation

Inglourious Basterds is a great movie, but not Best Movie Oscar worthy. In my opinion. Without Christoph Waltz I wouldn't have enjoyed it that much, there were too many inter...instersp....fuck, well "separate" scenes that drew the focus away from me. It would have been better as a tad shorter package.

The Hurt Locker was a great movie as well and I didn't find it boring or repetitive at all. All the situations were alive and very different. Seeing someone realistically go crazy about war and adrenaline rushes was nice to see (not goin gung-ho all guns blasting and screaming yee-haaw).

Avatar was Dances with Wolves without the blue people and floating mountains. On a technical standpoint it was very impressive but its story felt like a modern non Kevin Costner acting version of Dances with Wolves.

And Inglorious Basterds while funny is not the type of movie that will ever win the Best Picture award.

I think you sort of missed the point of the film. It wasn't so much about the actual "story", as in storyline, as it was about the character, his addiction, and the encompassing idea of the mental aspects of war. Amazing film in my opinion.

Our generations version of something like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, or Apocalypse Now.

thats about the best description i've heard for avatar.

Avatar deserved nothing but technical awards. The story was not original at all, and it took 3 hours to get anywhere, and then it was predictable as hell.

Hurt locker on the other hand was a fantastic film, and i was glad to see them win it over james cameron.

i know what his character was, the very first line of the movie is "war is a drug"

but the entire thing was a documentary style conglomeration of scenes. they felt so unlinked and it felt like the movie was going nowhere. you could tell from the first scene jeremy renner puts on that suit and pops that smoke that he was a junkie

Hurt Locker was good, but I agree not best picture good. In a normal year that statement would be correct, but look at the rest of the field this year. There were a lot of garbage movies this year. And if anyone says Avatar should have won best picture I feel sorry for you.

Its funny though, these fucking actors are so full of themselves. Sandra Bullock is not a nurturing mom, Renner didn't diffuse any bombs, Cameron didn't explore a distant planet. They are just pretending to be courageous and interesting people and they think they are fucking awesome and they have convinced us to care and watch them suck each other off every year at a awards show where they all congratulate each other for another year of pretending, walking down the red carpet like senators from Krypton. Fucking retards.

I watched the Blind Side yesterday for the first time. Anyone who says that was a good movie is just delusional. Just because something is a good story doesn't make it a good movie.

Also, why no love for the Cohen Bros movie A Serious Man? That movie was close to brilliant.

no, its not.

hurt locker will never come close to being in that canon of war movies.

and if you think so, you're straight up ignorant and totally out of touch with the feelings of veterans.

go back to playing your war video games because thats the only thing you know.

Because veterans are authorities on film? I mean, I agree with you that it wasn't that great of a movie, but this and your previous post show that you are judging the film based on the wrong criteria (i.e. not the film).

And my three friends in the Marines disagree with you as does my dad and his two best friends who served in Vietnam. So what does that say?

District 9 deserved more credit. It was pretty original and the acting was great. Avatar was just Pocahontas with better animation and blue people.

am in the only one that noticed the error
BEARJEW, THE BEARJEW, THE MOST BAD ASS MAN TO EVER APPEAR IN A MOVIE

and the bear jew didnt even win, the jew hunter did, IM GONNA KEEP YELLING SO I DONT LOOSE

The Jew hunter guy was probably one of the most intimidating psychological villains ever. Right up there with Hannibal Lector.

Wheres the love for Precious?
That movie was amazing. That was better than the Hurt Locker, and that was pretty fucking good.
And also, every war movie that has come out in the last 10 has been "a bad light on the military", and plus, this movie just makes the public feel bad about soldiers, so if anything it helps the military.

i was convinced he stole the show, ill be that is one of the best acting performances in this century

I agree, I was blown away by his acting in that movie, im pumped he won.

I also dont think the Hurt Locker should have recieved best picture, but im not really sure what should have. Inglorious bastards, District 9 and Avatar were both awesome movies, but not the type of movie that wins Best Picture. I dont know all of the nominees, but I havent seen the rest of them I dont think

??? I have a buddy in the army and he posted on facebook that it was "Exploiting soldiers". Can you explain this to me?

I thought the movie (although obviously over dramatic) showed the mental and physical struggles that soldiers face every day. I didn't feel like it was anti military in any way. But I am also not in the military.
