OS X Yosemite & iOS 8 - Thoughts

Newschoolers,

So since the new Mac OS and iOS have just been announced, and I know a lot of you will get the betas of each version, what are your thoughts?

Personally I think that iOS 8 is more of a refinement of iOS 7, a lot more stable when compared to iOS and thats expected as iOS 7 was the major overhaul. OS X on the other hand, looks really nice. It looks aesthetically pleasing, but it still just look like the Mac OS were used to so I am pretty excite about that. They have mentioned any changes in terms of performance so hope they're some enhancements.

Another amazing apple creation!!!!!1!!!

But really.

Apple is done making stuff better, its about as good as it can get and they know this. They are just marketing the shit out of apps and other bullshit. They add things to osx that has existed for years (dropbox, google drive) and everyone shits themselves OMG SO GOOD

Then they add swipe to ios8, now its gonna be soo cooL@!!

Sorry, apple keynotes really strike a cord with me, I fucking hate that shit. I love using osx but god damn they act like they invented the app in the into video and then bash android phones during their presentation? Jobs is rolling over in his grave right now.

But really...

This round of improvements for ios8 is minimal, some cool syncing stuff but I dont have an iphone so i dont care i guess. Using your phone on your computer is cool, oh wait google did that 5 fucking years ago with goggle voice. You can even use your phone on your computer if its not close by/on wifi anyways, so its fucking pointless.

OSX 10.10 (stupid fucking name) is a start in a new direction, 10.11 or 10.12 is basically gonna look like ios, all flat and pastel, etc.

I try so hard to respond to this discussion in a positive way, but alas I can not.

very excited for the syncing features between 10.10 and my iPhone, and possibly iPad in the future if it works well. VERY VERY useful for me at work.

Evan, I completely understand where your coming from. I think the iOS 8 part of the keynote was a bit lacking, seems half-baked, didn't really add anything new but then again they do like to save things for the iPhone release. OS 10.10 Yosemite, sounds really odd and doesn't flow naturally, this may be because I am from Australia, but i still think regardless of that it is an awkward name. I for one often like something new and some what refreshing, so I quite like the new look OS. It is worth noting that Apple is never to known to invent products but rather innovate on a previous product. For instance, Apple didn't invent the trackpad or touchpad found on laptops but sure did innovate them to be one of the best trackpads (2008 Macbook's and upwards).

I guess what I'm mostly bitter about is the fact that everything apple announced at this keynote, you could already do, they just made it take 1 second less of time... i dunno, just apple abusing their coolness and the somewhat brainwashed people of america that love it, they just follow it blindly.

I'm pretty excited to see what Swift and all the new capabilities for apps will bring. Camera API, widgets, and a lot of other integration will allow for a totally revamped operating system, even if it may look similar at first. Like Evan said, Apple has pretty much plateaued when it comes to operating systems (or so we think - just wait until the next big invention), but that doesn't mean that they still can't get much better through apps. Apple is finally allowing third party developers to help make the iPhone make use of all its capabilities like never before. Apple products may lose their ease of use feel, which I guess is kinda bad, but if that means that they're capable of a lot more than before then I'm all for it.

Whether you like it or not, Apple is slowly adapting Android's take on mobile operating systems. But knowing Apple, I'm sure they'll do an excellent job with it.

And despite all this, it still beats using Windows.

I mean yes, osx is definitely my prefered operating system, I more so hate the phone/tablet side of apple.

Ah, the lament of corporate culture. Since its innovations being light years ahead of everyone else's, Apple has since peaked and is now in the dreaded stage of corporate gains overshadowing innovation. In other words, Apple and Canon are now on the same bus. And that bus is headed for shit palace.

This is what I admire about Apple. Sincerely. They've created such a solid brand and such a loyal following that their customers will buy up all "new" products and updates regardless of what they are.

that is kind of how i see it, these rnt major improvements. i see them more as refining iOS 7. airdrop and all the other things that connect the mac to the phone will be great.

Looks dope, One of my friends is on the beta. He is stoked about it visually but it turns out he hasn't been able to send or receive an email through his mail app yet, haha. I am sure the full version will be fine and some of the connectivity features seem really nice.

On a related note, Apple is the king of PR, they own the pseudo-event. I don't get super hyped about everything they do but I like it more than the competition.

Installed the developer preview on an external HD and I have to say, I love the new safari. It looks very clean but most importantly it is a lot faster than the current safari. It sounds like a cliché saying that safari is snappier, but it honestly is, well at least in my experience.

Hmm what comp are you running it on? Mines a mid range early 2010 model, so I think Ill hold off for a few months until they release a new MBP and I upgrade to it.

I am running it on a late 2012 high end MBP Retina. Yeah its probably good to wait till either the end of this year or start of next year and get the new Broadwell intel chips.

Hhaaha ok thanks. I think my computer would become a rocket and explode if i tried to run it, although it does seem to be running a little better on mav than mountain lion, so maybe this is a step forward for apple where they wont deoptimise operating systems for old machines.

It's not like the iPhone and ios, a new osx will run just fine on an older mbp.

I hate how they do that with phones. It was what made me actively want to change to android, and was one of the main influences of me buying an s5 instead of a 5s. I couldn't stand running IOS7 on an Iphone 4

I am not entirely sure on this, but its the biggest inconsistency with android is the fact that only the flagship models run the latest OS, and the majority of android users are stuck with something older. I could be wrong, I just heard about.

i've been using it for about a month now, and I think it is very very nice. It looks and feels very modern.

Only complaints I have is that they have disabled the option to put the dock in the top left corner. I don't like to keep all of my programs in the dock, and think it just looks better to have the dock in the top, so each icon is always in the same spot.

Also macports is not working properly, but that's expected. I have been waiting a LONG time for dark menu bars. It would be awesome if they work on matching dark windows.
