Sorry apple. not the fastest anymore are we?

so now there is absolutely no reason to buy a g5 except that it is pretty.

that was the dumbest comment i've ever heard. g5s have never been the fastest processor out there...not to mention they advertise the fastest personal computer. how about you go find as many people using the opteron processor as you can and i'll do the same for the g5. the opteron isn't exactly a personal computer processor.

sorry about that comment...didn't mean to come off like a dick. does anyone really care about this though...as long as you can play full length divx porn it really doesn't matter.

Opteron is a server chip, the G5 is a desktop chip. Better comparison would be A64 or FX-51 is better than the G5.

They aren't the same type of chips, but yes, the opteron is better. But still a crappy comparison.

^well guess what both of the new amd 64 bit chips blow the g5 out of the water. look for the article on slashdot.

by opteron i meant amd's family of 64bit chips

Why are you telling me to read an article on slashdot when I said that the A64 and FX51 are both faster than the G5? Slashdot sucks for hardware reviews as well. Suggest you find some other places.

And dont tell me you read THG or HardOCP because they are even worse...

old news, i posted like a month ago about the athlon 64. and theres the p4 extreme, but that just emulates a 64 bit processor (even though it has higher benchmarks)

who cares? most people dont use mac for the speed(even though it as fast as can be) they use for the great opperating system and all there graphics arts stuff, how many people have the best pc anyway? or the best latest and greatest computer of any brand? it really doesnt matter just get what u like

SkeeorDye, youre a dumb ass.

The P4 Extreme Edition does not emulate 64bit anything you dumb ass. It is simply a 32bit chip with a 2mb cache, or a Xeon rebadged as a P4.

slashdot is NOT a place for hardware reviews. slashdot is a place to link to reviews on other sites...so you basically said places like tom's hardware suck.

the reason people like macs for video/graphics is b/c of their floating point unit and the altivec engine. the hardware in those terms is incredibly good. liek if you have 2 floating point arrays you want added say assembly would look like...

addvf v0, v1, v2

sv 0(r0), v0

so that'd say add vector 1 and vector 2, store it in vector register 0 and store vector 0 in memeory at the memory location listed in r0. i don't remember the vector operations in a lot of the x86 machines, but apple's claim to fame is if you have a list of numbers like 1,2,3,4,5 and another list 5,4,3,2,1 after we're doing w/adding the first vector value we can start on the store. so after adding 1 and 5 we can store it at r0 while our vector floating point unit is still doing the rest of the operations. in other words, in a fully pipelined situation w/forwarding of results we can do our entire thing in perfect time...i.e. we have a cpi of 1...no pipeline stalls.

on normal x86 machines (like if the compiler doesn't pick up on this optimization or there is no vector unit, which a lot of the x86 machines don't have), this'll be a stall up the ass...most likely # of cycles it takes to do 1 floating point add times the number of items in the vector...that's constly. otherwise it'll break the entire thing down into a loop of like 10 instructions and you'll have a decent hit b/c of branch misprediction which would range depending on your branch prediction scheme.

that's one of the reasons people use macs...but that's not just for graphics/video stuff. did that make sense???

it has l3 cache too! Oh Boy!!! let's see how many pointless features we can add to our cpu!

But anyways, I used one of the g5's the other day and I sorta ended up bringing it home and I was working in photoshop and this cool video editing program (i forget what it's called but it's specifically for benchmarking) on both the g5 and my athlon xp and the g5 was hardly any faster. Where it was really noticable was when I was playing back the video, but then again my various ati graphics cards (radeon 9700 pro, soon to be 9800 pro hopefully) all have video enhancement that help.

My suggestion: Don't be gay and hate macs because they aren't main stream! They are definetely more stable under some conditions (notice how i said 'some') and although they can be annoying as hell when they talk it is pretty cool that they can incorporate that into an os without taking up massive resources. MACs are better and graphic and video editing, windows has the best variety of games and linux (which is also becoming a popular gaming platform) is the best for long term stability and for general use of the computer *cough*hacking*achem*

haha, and no this isn't one of my gay try to be cool posts, or so you think!

On my way to goddom

I wish there was a good open source operating system out there that was stable and had a good video editing program, or photoshop like program.....
