OP's struggle is real

What's up,

So, coming into my last few years of high school and I'm starting to have to make some pretty big decisions in terms of things which will significantly affect my future, things like University's/ Degree's/ Courses/ Subjects which i would like to carry on with, and pretty much just what i want to spend the rest of my life doing.

And thats just the thing, i don't know what i want to do with my future education and career/s, A part of me just wants to say fuck it, skiing is my favourite thing to do in the world i'll be a ski bum, or get a quick job at a ski resort and spend my life in the mountains doing what i love the most just trying to get by on the paycheque.

The other part of me says don't be fucking stupid and go get a degree which you can make a shitload of money with, which is pretty much setting me up for a 3-4 year degree course in something like structural engineering and then probably a masters, because thats just the way it works, the more qualified you are, the more money you get (most of the time anyways) now this would mean i probably wouldn't be able to spend the amount of time i want to spend skiing until i get a job sorted and what not, by which point with all the years spent getting qualified etc, i would probably be around 23-24, and i feel like at that point i've missed my prime for skiing park and what not.

So, peeps, whats the deal?

Do i take the path of the ski bum and follow the mountains.

Or

Go to school be boring, get my degrees make mad money in engineering and spend weekends skiing.

become a pilot, run drugs, start an outerwear company as a front, make video of you drifting an STI and shooting road signs

So you are saying you are a sophomore? Because you should probably worry less about college if you are only a sophomore.

Go to college, get stuff figured out when you are in college since you don't know what you want to do yet. Don't be a ski bum, you will probably realize that you aren't cut out for it after a season

I have no clue what a sophomore is but over here in the UK I'm in lower 6th form (YEAR 11)

So actually i'll be selecting my college applications pretty soon here.

I'd say be a ski bum first beacuse you'll probably get tired of being poor, then you can go to college and get a job that pays well. Or, who knows, you might find a decent paying job in a ski town or just not want to leave.

There are lot's of happy people still working at ski areas and also lots of people with degrees that aren't making a shit ton of money.

A degree can help depending on what you want to do, but imo it's not a magic free pass to success and happiness as it's pushed.

I know people getting useless degrees for way too much money. Does having a degree look good on a job application? Of course, but for a lot of jobs experience > everything.

I'm not hating on college, if it wasn't unreasonably expensive and I could have found a school to fit my needs I would have liked to but whatever. I generally take this side more to combat the side I've always heard that is "you HAVE to go to college". Honestly that's straight bullshit. IT's a tough time, a lot of big choices, a lot of people are unsure, but for the $$$ some colleges charge you should have some idea what the hell you want to do before going.

IT really all boils down to what you want. Where do you see yourself in the future, how much money do you need to do that? A job in the ski industry probably won't buy you a big house in a nice suburban gated community or a ski house at the bottom of a ski resort.

Just think about what you want, what you need to get there. It's different for everyone. I've been working at ski areas for 13 seasons and will probably be doing it for many more years. I'm what would be considered poor by most people but I don't need much money to survive.

It's all what you want out of life. As somebody already said, smoke a bowl and ponder the meaning of the universe

go to college, take your education seriously, find a career you enjoy that will still allow you to live in a place that caters to your hobbies.

College does not equal no skiing. If you go to the University of Miami it might but if you go somewhere out west or many places in the midwest close to hills them you should have at least some time to ski. As for a job, if you want to be able to ski a lot then I would recommend a carreer that would allow you to do so. That would not be a 9-5 M-F job where you need to live in certain cities. Try getting something that allows you to work say 3 12's.

When you get to pick, go to school where you will enjoy yourself, the rest will fall into place.

Or move to a ski town and convince yourself otherwise, plenty make it work, but even the people with degrees are working harder and getting paid less. Living responsibly and having fun don't need to be mutually exclusive, find the compromise that works best for you.

Take a few years off after high school and become a ski bum until you find out what you really wanna study/do with your life. That way you can see if you really wanna do the ski bum thing and you won't waste money on school studying something you done wanna do later in life.

Why not both? Why don't you go to school and major something that you can use in the ski industry? Marketing, Public relations, Retail, Supply Chain management, Finance. Literally almost anything can be in some way be related to skiing.

Maybe down the line in college you get an internship somewhere in a ski company and get a shot at the big times.

Or you can also just go to college out west or really anywhere with snow and ski on the weekends.

You should go to college since it will give you some type of discipline and let you grow are a person.

Western Colorado state university is thirty minutes from Crested Butte which is a decently sized resort with plenty of jobs to be had. there you go son. Degree and a mountain. boom

plymouth state is kinda fun. basically just pass class and ski. its really easy to be honest. some majors are harder than others sure, but pretty much everyones classes are pretty easy. not like op's mom easy, but certainly not the hardest school by any means in the area
