Opinions wanted: New Camera

Hey guys,

So I'm looking to buy a new camera. Sadly enough, my beloved 7D mark 1 is becoming obsolete. I've been doing this for a while now and know quite a lot about cameras, I'm more looking for opinions of people who have used the cameras that they suggest. Money is tight but I should be able to get a bit for my 7D. As reference, I can't afford a GH4 right now.

NOTE: I don't just shoot video, I shoot stills just as much.

My current ideas are: GH3, GH4 (wait until the GH5 comes out is late september), 5D mk2, something sony maybe the a7?, 7D mk2 if I can afford it...

I don't really wanna go full frame but it's a possibility.

Thanks in advance.

Have you had a look at the new Sony a6300? Shoots 4K and 1080 @120 fps. it's missing a couple things touchscreen, headphone jack, etc. But for $999 US I'd say it's something to consider. It's also got like 430 auto focus points or something crazy like that. I just ordered mine.

Seems like an unreal camera for photo. Got my hopes up but the apparently the rolling shutter in 4k is to the point where its basically unusable.

Not related but I can't wait until the GH5 comes out

Rumored 8K, 4K 60fps, 1080p 120fps

perks of being a pc gamer :)

Except a gaming computer still isn't necessarily gonna handle 8k footage well at all. You're gonna need more and faster storage (SSD's and RAID array's), and probably a better CPU (if you have a dated i7 or an i5 I don't think it's gonna cut it). You probably have a GPU that supports OpenCL/CUDA but you're gonna need more VRAM in your graphic card if you want it to work well. You'll also want a quality IPS monitor if you're gonna bother with such high resolutions. There's no point in shooting 4K/6K/8K unless you've got a monitor with accurate color representation.

Then again, what's the point of even shooting 8K? 4K is hardly available in the mainstream right now.

Yeah i get what your saying about the monitor and shit! I would never buy a 4k monitor for any reason. I mean hell if I had the money laying around id buy one! but with having camera equipment to buy along with other things like daily spending. But i totally agree with you. Most computers for gaming wont cut it for editing in 4k and 8k

Thanks I'll check it out

I heard 6k30 for the gh5 as the max but I could be wrong. Guess we'll have to wait until NAB though. 4K 60 and higher frame rates at Fhd sounds really nice though.

I don't know what you have in terms of lenses but I'm switching to Nikon. The D7100 is a fucking awesome body and in my opinion is one of the best out there if you aren't going full frame.

I doubt it's 8k..... that's super unrealistic + even if they're doing 8k i guarantee it won't be to an SD card.

best case scenario it's 4k 60fps with 10bit 4:2:2 internally but I kinda doubt it'd do 10 bit internally so we'll see

Use your best judgement for rumors haha
