Olympic freeski team ANOUNCED

damn, your right. I need to read more haha. Well, lets change it up then. How does everyone feel about these nominations?

They have a listing of "clubs" that the athletes are representing for the Olympics? So athletes can't represent sponsors? Wow.

Sorry for the double post but why are there Pro and Rookie teams for slopestyle and halfpipe?

The clubs are such a joke. Repping high schools and colleges the skiers never actually skied for or were trained by. What is that supposed to even mean?

The Olympics is, at heart, supposed to be an 'amateur' competition. Some of the 'old ways' from before professionals were allowed to compete in the games are still in place.

Look into the IOC's "Rule 40" for more about athletes, sponsors, and the Olympics if you want to know more.

Fun facts about Simon Dumont's "ski club:"

As their school mascot is the rebels, they rocked the confederate flag until 1992 and their mascot is yosemite sam.

This is the US freesking team for 2013-14 NOT the US Olympic team for the 2014 Olympics

what i really should have done was do a Ladybugs sorta thing where I started pretending to be a girl a few years ago so I could ski in the olympics

haha, japan gets the same amount of entries as canada in men's, and MORE in women's? something seems wrong there.

It's just a fact of life.

The olympics might get all the glory but in many sports/events the olympic gold medalist didn't get their glory from beating the deepest or toughest field.

It's kind of dumb, the olympics are supposed to represent the best athletes in the world but when countries are limited to a certain number of entrants, it takes that away.

The #3 guy on the Canadian slopestyle team isn't going to the Olympics but he is definitely better than the #1 and #2 chek guys that are going.

And then Japan gets 4 guys in pipe? Lol wut? If you look at the afp world rankings, there are 12 Americans before the first Japanese guy yet both teams get to send 4 guys.

in one sentence, why is this? does each country only have a certain number they can send for anything and everything, or what's the deal

i think what people are failing to realize here is that pipe and slope are under the freestyle banner...they are not their own individual sports.

countries are allowed 14 men and 14 women regardless of where their athletes stand in the world rankings. this has to be spread out among moguls, arials, skicross, slope and pipe. is it ideal? no, but it's necessary to allow for equal representation on the world stage. if not, it would be the Canada v. US games with a couple Aussies and Euros tossed in there.

this is the spirit of the games...you all wanted it so you need to play along.

i should also state that Canada and the US already have too many athletes and need to reduce their teams as they stand right now.

Remember all of those bullshit world cups last year and then the world championships in olso/voss?

The top overall points getters from that (I guess you'd call it a) series create a leaderboard. The skiers on that list don't actually matter, just the home countries of those skiers.

Based on the results, spots are allocated per country, max 4 per country until 24 or 30 spots are allocated.

So if USA went 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 in the overall standings, USA would be given 4 spots.

If Kazakhstan had a skier ranked 999th for the entire series, but there was still to be a spot allocated because every other country had maxed out their 4 spot before the 999th skier, Kazakhstan would get a spot.

On the bright side, the top guys are going to win anyway. The right spots are going to go to the right people. The fifth American might be able to wreck the field but still has nothing on the rest of his team.

_____

It sucks that teams that don't have a realist shot at the podium get to take away the experience from the guys who could create a better competition...

This isn't exactly true. You have to have a top 30 result at a World Cup event in order to qualify for the games. This is how they prevent countries who are awful at skiing bringing in a full team.

Yes, it sucks that some worthy skiers from strong countries won't get to compete, but unless you have the ability to get top 30 at a world cup, you won't be competing. The level of competition won't be as low as you think.

thanks a lot guys, i appreciate the info and don't keep up with it at all

now on to the real important stuff: what do the uniforms look like and who's making them??

That's interesting for sure. I guess as the sport progresses on the World Cup level, this won't be as much of an issue. Just going to take time.

I'm a mogul skier, and as a Canadian it sucks to see so many of our incredible skiers not qualifying cause they're top 6 in the world, but not top 4 in Canada, for example. At World Cup mogul events, you never hear of people not competing due to weather. Either the competition gets cancelled, or everyone competes.

I think it will just take time for slope world cups to be taken as seriously. For those guys the X Games and Dew Tour are still probably the bigger events in their heads, so sitting one out isn't a big deal, while for bump skiers, sitting out a world cup will pretty much only happen because of serious injury

Fuck only 4 spots? Id be mega bummer when I made it all this way and someone says:

"Thanks for the hard work, tens of thousands of dollars in travel, and risking your life but you wont be skiing in the Olympics.... Have fun watching your team mates. Oh yeah... And sorry about the STD you picked up in the Olympic village, but at least your not in jail for being gay."

isn't gus kenworthy sponsored by nike who is an official partner of olympics. So he can rep?

lot of the womens field too. a lot of competitors were pissed at FIS officals and shit for not post-poning the comp.
